Chapter 717
I threw a look at Cole. โIโll figure out whoโs behind thisโand theyโll regret it.โ
Cole let out a soft laugh. โFirst time Iโve heard you talk so tough.โ
I shot him a glare. โWhether itโs tough talk or not, youโll find out soon enough. Now go. Youโve done enough.โ
Cole had milked this scene long enough. With Hayden staying perfectly still throughout the whole act, Cole finally gave in and turned to leave. But not without tossing one last remark over his shoulder.
โMs. Kay, heโs just a stand-in. Donโt let yourself get too attached again.โ
I didnโt bother responding. Watching him walk out the door, I exhaled slowly. My eyes drifted back to Hayden, lying there so still. He wasnโt a stand-in. Not for anyone. He was himselfโalways himself.
For a long moment, I just stood there, staring at him. Finally, I leaned in and whispered, โHayden, theyโre all gone. You can drop the act now.โ
Silence.
Thinking he was messing with me, I slid my hand under the blanket and gave him a light pinch. โSeriously, itโs just me here. No one else.โ
Still nothing. My chest tightened, panic creeping in.
โHayโโ
Before I could finish, something warm brushed against my lips. My eyes flew wide as I froze in place.
Hayden. He nipped at my bottom lip, his voice low and teasing. โIf you keep calling my name like that, youโll blow my cover.โ
I pinched him again, harder this time. โWhy didnโt you answer sooner?โ
His gaze was steady. โWanted to see how worried youโd get.โ
This bastard. Did he have any idea how freaked out I was?
โIโm sorry,โ he said, those two words he always used to excuse his reckless stunts. โWhen I faked my death last timeโฆ were you this scared then too? Or more?โ
More. So much more. I didnโt even have to think about it. The memory of Yara handing me that urn, the weight of it, the finalityโcame crashing back. My world had felt like it shattered into a million pieces.
But instead of saying all that, I pinched him again, hard.
He hissed through his teeth. โKiki, that hurtsโฆโ
Good. He deserved it. The pain Iโd gone throughโphysical, emotional, everythingโwas because of him.
Still, with his head wrapped in bandages and the bloodied drainage tube right there, I couldnโt keep up the fight. Letting out a breath, I loosened my grip and asked, suspicion in my tone, โThat doctorโs whole explanationโฆ was it fake? And what about the tube? Is it even real?โ
โItโs fake,โ Hayden admitted casually.
Not that it shocked me. But those punches and kicks heโd taken earlier? Definitely not fake.
โYouโre quite the actor,โ I muttered, my tone caught somewhere between bitter and concerned.
โSometimes you have to lose the pawn to catch the king.โ
That earned him another sharp pinch under the blanket. My hand rested against his bare skinโno shirt, just him and my endless pinching. After everything heโd endured earlier, now he had to deal with this. Honestly, his whole act was a next-level masterclass in โsuffering for the plan.โ
โHow long are you planning to keep this up?โ I asked. โYou canโt just lie here forever.โ
โA few days,โ he said with that maddening calmness.
My thoughts darted to DracoLux and their shady dealings. โWhat if something big happens? Arenโt you worried youโll miss it?โ
โIโve got people in place,โ he said. Heโd clearly built up a network while undercover, already prepared for a situation like this.
That triggered another memoryโDemi. Hayden had mentioned she was about to be trafficked into their black-market schemes.
โDamn it. Demi.โ I bolted upright.
Hayden seemed to realize it too. His fingers caught mine gently. โAt this point, itโs probably too late to stop it.โ
Too late or not, I couldnโt sit here.
Without another word, I pulled away and raced out of the hospital, my heart pounding as I headed for the address Hayden had given me.
When I arrived, I barely had time to process anything before I spotted a figure in the distance. Her steps were shaky.
Slamming on the gas, I sped toward her. My car screeched to a halt, but before I could even get out, she crumpled forward, slamming heavily against the hood of my car.
