Chapter 717

I threw a look at Cole. โ€œIโ€™ll figure out whoโ€™s behind thisโ€”and theyโ€™ll regret it.โ€

Cole let out a soft laugh. โ€œFirst time Iโ€™ve heard you talk so tough.โ€

I shot him a glare. โ€œWhether itโ€™s tough talk or not, youโ€™ll find out soon enough. Now go. Youโ€™ve done enough.โ€

Cole had milked this scene long enough. With Hayden staying perfectly still throughout the whole act, Cole finally gave in and turned to leave. But not without tossing one last remark over his shoulder.

โ€œMs. Kay, heโ€™s just a stand-in. Donโ€™t let yourself get too attached again.โ€

I didnโ€™t bother responding. Watching him walk out the door, I exhaled slowly. My eyes drifted back to Hayden, lying there so still. He wasnโ€™t a stand-in. Not for anyone. He was himselfโ€”always himself.

For a long moment, I just stood there, staring at him. Finally, I leaned in and whispered, โ€œHayden, theyโ€™re all gone. You can drop the act now.โ€

Silence.

Thinking he was messing with me, I slid my hand under the blanket and gave him a light pinch. โ€œSeriously, itโ€™s just me here. No one else.โ€

Still nothing. My chest tightened, panic creeping in.

โ€œHayโ€”โ€

Before I could finish, something warm brushed against my lips. My eyes flew wide as I froze in place.

Hayden. He nipped at my bottom lip, his voice low and teasing. โ€œIf you keep calling my name like that, youโ€™ll blow my cover.โ€

I pinched him again, harder this time. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you answer sooner?โ€

His gaze was steady. โ€œWanted to see how worried youโ€™d get.โ€

This bastard. Did he have any idea how freaked out I was?

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he said, those two words he always used to excuse his reckless stunts. โ€œWhen I faked my death last timeโ€ฆ were you this scared then too? Or more?โ€

More. So much more. I didnโ€™t even have to think about it. The memory of Yara handing me that urn, the weight of it, the finalityโ€”came crashing back. My world had felt like it shattered into a million pieces.

But instead of saying all that, I pinched him again, hard.

He hissed through his teeth. โ€œKiki, that hurtsโ€ฆโ€

Good. He deserved it. The pain Iโ€™d gone throughโ€”physical, emotional, everythingโ€”was because of him.

Still, with his head wrapped in bandages and the bloodied drainage tube right there, I couldnโ€™t keep up the fight. Letting out a breath, I loosened my grip and asked, suspicion in my tone, โ€œThat doctorโ€™s whole explanationโ€ฆ was it fake? And what about the tube? Is it even real?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fake,โ€ Hayden admitted casually.

Not that it shocked me. But those punches and kicks heโ€™d taken earlier? Definitely not fake.

โ€œYouโ€™re quite the actor,โ€ I muttered, my tone caught somewhere between bitter and concerned.

โ€œSometimes you have to lose the pawn to catch the king.โ€

That earned him another sharp pinch under the blanket. My hand rested against his bare skinโ€”no shirt, just him and my endless pinching. After everything heโ€™d endured earlier, now he had to deal with this. Honestly, his whole act was a next-level masterclass in โ€œsuffering for the plan.โ€

โ€œHow long are you planning to keep this up?โ€ I asked. โ€œYou canโ€™t just lie here forever.โ€

โ€œA few days,โ€ he said with that maddening calmness.

My thoughts darted to DracoLux and their shady dealings. โ€œWhat if something big happens? Arenโ€™t you worried youโ€™ll miss it?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got people in place,โ€ he said. Heโ€™d clearly built up a network while undercover, already prepared for a situation like this.

That triggered another memoryโ€”Demi. Hayden had mentioned she was about to be trafficked into their black-market schemes.

โ€œDamn it. Demi.โ€ I bolted upright.

Hayden seemed to realize it too. His fingers caught mine gently. โ€œAt this point, itโ€™s probably too late to stop it.โ€

Too late or not, I couldnโ€™t sit here.

Without another word, I pulled away and raced out of the hospital, my heart pounding as I headed for the address Hayden had given me.

When I arrived, I barely had time to process anything before I spotted a figure in the distance. Her steps were shaky.

Slamming on the gas, I sped toward her. My car screeched to a halt, but before I could even get out, she crumpled forward, slamming heavily against the hood of my car.
