Chapter 725

Wayne was behind his pain, and I made a mental note to remember it. I stopped, still pressed close to Hayden, catching my breath. Messing around with him like this feltโ€ฆ good, like we were back to normal. Then I remembered he was technically still supposed to be in a coma. โ€œHow long are you planning to keep up the act?โ€ I asked.

โ€œIโ€™m done. Iโ€™m awake now, arenโ€™t I?โ€ he replied, grinning lazily.

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re such a troll. Youโ€™re just messing with them for fun, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Haydenโ€™s expression darkened slightly. โ€œIf I didnโ€™t have bigger priorities, Iโ€™d do more than mess with them. Iโ€™d make them pay.โ€ His tone was casual, but the words carried a dangerous edge. He called it โ€œmessing,โ€ but we both knew he was talking about risking everythingโ€”his life, no less. It wasnโ€™t that different from what Demi had been through.

โ€œI saw Demiโ€ฆโ€ I told him about her situation, sharing everything Iโ€™d learned. Hayden didnโ€™t say a word, but I could see the weight of it in his eyes.

โ€œLena said she once treated girls with injuries like Demiโ€™s. She thinks their stories are similar and offered to track them down to gather more evidence,โ€ I added, hoping for a reaction. But Hayden stayed quiet.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ I waved a hand in front of his face.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t just about trafficking women. Itโ€™s a whole black-market operationโ€”bigger than you realize. Theyโ€™re running an international network, not just local dirt,โ€ he said finally.

That explained why DracoLux wasnโ€™t just your typical shady nightclub. If all they did was sell sex, Hayden wouldnโ€™t be in this deepโ€”or faking his death.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand everything youโ€™re dealing with, and I donโ€™t want to. But you need to promise me one thing: keep yourself safe,โ€ I said firmly. He had his responsibilities, and DracoLux had already hurt someone I cared about. I didnโ€™t have the right to hold him back.

Hayden cupped my face, his touch soft but his voice heavy. โ€œI didnโ€™t want you involved. But here you are, tangled up in all of this. Promise me youโ€™ll be carefulโ€”especially around Wayne.โ€

He was right. Wayne wasnโ€™t the man he pretended to be; dangerous under the surface, no matter how harmless he seemed.

He claimed to love me, even worshipped me. But if he couldnโ€™t have me, I had no doubt heโ€™d destroy me instead. I didnโ€™t tell Hayden that part. There was no point; it would only make him worry more. Hayden had always been my protector, but this time, I wanted to be the one shielding him.

โ€œTanyaโ€™s probably tied to DracoLux too,โ€ I said, outlining my plan to use her as leverage. He nodded, his expression serious. โ€œYou know this could put you in the crosshairs, right?โ€

I laughed. โ€œYou think Iโ€™d be that reckless? The barโ€™s already signed over to Tanyaโ€”everythingโ€™s properly notarized. I made sure of that.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not just richโ€”youโ€™re getting sharp, too,โ€ Hayden teased, though his tone carried a note of pride.

I shrugged. โ€œNot sharp, justโ€ฆ practical. If I donโ€™t take control, someone else willโ€”and theyโ€™ll drag me somewhere worse.โ€

Haydenโ€™s thumb brushed my cheek softly, a rare tenderness in his gaze. โ€œYouโ€™ve grown up, Kiki.โ€

โ€˜Iโ€™ve grown up so I can protect you.โ€™ I didnโ€™t say it out loud, but the thought stayed with me. Hayden had to go undercover at a place like DracoLux, and with his looks, there was no way he wouldnโ€™t catch someoneโ€™s eye. It wasnโ€™t jealousyโ€”I trusted him. But I wasnโ€™t naive. If Wayne suspected Haydenโ€™s fake identity, the beating he gave him wouldnโ€™t be the end of it. Wayne would escalateโ€”use women to test him or worse, try to plant doubts in my mind.

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice sliced through my thoughts, his usual accuracy making my stomach flip. โ€œWorried Wayne might send women to test me?โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ I admitted. โ€œIf he sets you up to entertain some rich womanโ€”drinks, maybe overnightโ€”would you stay in character?โ€ My voice stayed calm, but I wasnโ€™t just asking. I was testing him too.

Haydenโ€™s lips curved into a slow, teasing smirk. Instead of answering, he flipped the script. โ€œWhatโ€™s this? Jealous?โ€

โ€œJealous?โ€ I scoffed, holding my chin high. โ€œI donโ€™t do jealous. If I want something, I take it.โ€

His gaze softened, so warm and full of affection it made my heart skip. Like heโ€™d been waiting for me to say those words.

โ€œThen please, Miss Benefactor, take good care of your investment.โ€
