Chapter 727

It felt like another riddle waiting to be solved, but honestly? The less I knew, the safer we both were. Hayden kissed my forehead. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™m not going anywhereโ€”my little monster needs me.โ€

Little monster?! Okay, adorable. I grabbed my phone and immediately updated my chat app username to match. Steve noticed in about two seconds flat. โ€œ[Who are you planning to attack now?]โ€ he messaged.

I smirked, thinking, โ€˜Monsters donโ€™t attackโ€”they just make sure no one messes with them.โ€™

It had been a while since Iโ€™d heard from Steve. After Houston, all I knew was heโ€™d sold his pool hall and gone off the grid. Considering how messy things got back there, I couldnโ€™t blame him for bailing. Honestly, it was probably the smartest move.

I fired back two words: [Fighting demons!]

Steve replied almost instantly. [How have you been lately?]

Whether I was good or not didnโ€™t really matter. If heโ€™d been keeping up with the news, heโ€™d already know. The fact he asked meant he hadnโ€™t been paying attention.

[Not bad,] I typed back.

His response came quick: [Rea, sorry. Iโ€™ve owed you that word for a long time.]

I stared at the screen, caught off guard, when another message buzzed in: [I feel responsible for you losing Hayden.]

So thatโ€™s what he thoughtโ€”that it was all on him. But he had no clue heโ€™d just been a pawn, a spark for someone elseโ€™s twisted plans.

[You didnโ€™t do anything wrong], I typed. [It was fate, and itโ€™s for the best.]

I had no idea what Steve was up to these days, but it was clear heโ€™d put some serious distance between himself and the chaos. He didnโ€™t even know what was happening with me now, which meant heโ€™d stepped way back.

If thatโ€™s how he wanted it, I wasnโ€™t about to drag him back into the mess. And as for the possibility of Hayden being alive? That stayed locked up tight. All Steve needed to know was that I was fine. Stable, even.

When he didnโ€™t reply, I didnโ€™t push. Some conversations donโ€™t need an ending.

Chapter 727

After the chat, I grabbed a few things and headed to Yunaโ€™s kindergarten. But this time, she wasnโ€™t out there leading games. Another teacher had taken her place.

โ€œExcuse me, whereโ€™s Yuna?โ€ I asked, trying to sound casual.

โ€œShe resigned,โ€ the teacher said.

The words hit like a curveball. โ€œWhy?โ€ I blurted.

โ€œSheโ€™s going to college,โ€ she explained, and just like that, my chest unclenched. Relief.

So, Yuna hadnโ€™t quit her job to dodge Wade. If she really wanted to avoid him, college wouldnโ€™t have been her next moveโ€”especially since heโ€™d be there too.

I headed to her place and knocked. When she opened the door, her expression wasnโ€™t exactly warm. Not surprised to see me, but definitely colder than usual.

She was mad. I knew why.

โ€œAre you mad at me?โ€ I asked, cutting to the chase.

โ€œYes,โ€ she shot back, no hesitation.

โ€œWill you hear me out?โ€

Yuna crossed her arms and sat down. โ€œGo ahead.โ€

I laid it all out: Narelleโ€™s story, Wadeโ€™s connection to her, and his whole confession about why heโ€™d pursued Yuna in the first place.

โ€œYuna, I wanted to tell you,โ€ I said, keeping it honest. โ€œBut with your health, I worried itโ€™d be too much for you to handle. I thought I was protecting you.โ€

She placed a hand over her chest, her voice steady. โ€œIโ€™m not as fragile as you think. And if this heart is so weak, it doesnโ€™t deserve to be in my body.โ€

Her words hit differentlyโ€”not bitter, just raw and strong.

I smiled softly. โ€œYouโ€™re right. This heart is in your body now. Itโ€™s yoursโ€”no one elseโ€™s.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ she said, her tone sharp. โ€œBecause no one is trustworthy to begin with.โ€

That hit like a curveball. I looked at her closely, trying to read her expression.

She met my gaze head-on. โ€œKeira, I trusted you. So much. But I never thought youโ€™d lie to me too.โ€
