Chapter 729

Wayneโ€™s gaze darkened, heavy and cold. โ€œOf course it matters.โ€

If it werenโ€™t for Hayden, Wayne mightโ€™ve had his shot. Keira and Jaceโ€™s breakup had been the perfect opening, but Hayden had slipped in before he could. Wayne had always blamed himself for being just a step too late. If heโ€™d come back soonerโ€”been there when the cracks started between Keira and Jaceโ€”would Hayden have ever been part of the picture?

But life doesnโ€™t deal in what ifs. Wayne had missed his chance, and Hayden had taken it.

โ€œHow surprisingโ€”and what an honorโ€”to be someone so important to you,โ€ Hayden quipped, his words sharp enough to draw blood.

Wayne smirked faintly. โ€œLetโ€™s stop playing games and get to the point.โ€

โ€œTo what exactly?โ€ Haydenโ€™s tone was light, almost mocking.

โ€œI know why youโ€™re pretending to be someone else,โ€ Wayne said, straight to the point. โ€œBut youโ€™re not part of Blade Front anymore. That fight? Itโ€™s not yours. If you keep this up, youโ€™ll just end up hurting yourselfโ€”and everyone around you.โ€

A warning, thinly veiled as advice.

Haydenโ€™s teasing faรงade dropped, replaced with cool focus. Wayne wasnโ€™t here to stir up troubleโ€”this was a negotiation.

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ve left Blade Front,โ€ Hayden said, his tone calm. โ€œBut when you all keep dragging me into your mess, what choice do I have but to play along?โ€

Wayne smirked. That was all the confirmation he neededโ€”Hayden had just admitted who he really was.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t pull you in because of who you are,โ€ Wayne replied, tilting his head slightly.

Hayden nodded. โ€œNo, you dragged me in to get rid of me. But you didnโ€™t think to check what you were dealing with. Thatโ€™s on you for kicking a hornetโ€™s nest.โ€

Hayden wasnโ€™t just some ex-soldier. His time with Blade Frontโ€”a covert international task force battling global crimeโ€”was no ordinary service. For three years, heโ€™d operated undercover, his identity classified even within the group. It wasnโ€™t until Keiraโ€™s brush with death in Houstonโ€”and Wayneโ€™s reckless choice to involve Hermanโ€”that Hayden called on his old contacts, exposing himself in the process.

Wayne let out a low, humorless laugh. โ€œSo, youโ€™re saying we brought this on ourselves.โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t deny it.

Chapter 729

โ€œAlright,โ€ Wayne said, shifting gears. โ€œLetโ€™s talk terms. What will it take for you to stay out of this? Money? Orโ€ฆ someone?โ€

By โ€œsomeone,โ€ he meant Keira.

โ€œDo I look like I need money?โ€ Hayden tilted his head slightly, the faint mark of Keiraโ€™s kiss catching the light.

Wayneโ€™s smirk wavered, replaced by a cold glare. โ€œHayden, wake up. If you keep this up, the one whoโ€™ll suffer most is Keira.โ€

Another warning. Another thinly veiled threat.

Hayden gave a small nod, acknowledging the weight behind Wayneโ€™s words.

But then he said, โ€œWayne Johnston, you donโ€™t love Keira. You want herโ€”because sheโ€™s your trophy. This isnโ€™t about her; itโ€™s about beating Jace. Having her proves youโ€™re not second best.โ€

Wayneโ€™s face darkened instantly. โ€œHow dare Hayden say that?โ€ Of course, he loved Keira. Heโ€™d loved her for years! Right?

He clenched his jaw, trying to ignore how much the jab stung. โ€œYou have no right to judge my feelings,โ€ he said icily.

Hayden shrugged, unfazed. โ€œMaybe not, but your feelings dragged me into this circus. And letโ€™s not forget, theyโ€™ve hurt the girl I love.โ€

Cue awkward silence. Wayneโ€™s laugh broke it. โ€œYou Blade Front guys really are a pain in the ass. But donโ€™t get cocky, Hayden. Youโ€™re not one of them anymore. Sure, they respect you, but when itโ€™s you versus their interests, who do you think theyโ€™ll pick?โ€

Haydenโ€™s expression didnโ€™t even flicker. โ€œFeel free to find out.โ€

The air between them practically crackled, both too stubborn to blink first.

Finally, Wayne spoke again. โ€œYouโ€™ve got evidence, donโ€™t you? Letโ€™s make a deal. What do I have to do for you to hand it over?โ€

Hayden stayed quiet.

Wayne pushed harder. โ€œCome on, hand it over, and weโ€™ll call it even. No grudges, no revenge.โ€

โ€œAnd if I donโ€™t?โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice was calm but sharp.

Wayneโ€™s eyes narrowed into slits. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€
