Chapter 733

Even though Lena and I had been friends forever, this was the first time Iโ€™d heard her talk about a childbirth caseโ€”especially one with such a heartbreaking ending. Hearing her recount it left a heavy, sinking feeling in my chest. It made sense now why she avoided talking about work. But still, imagining what that family was going throughโ€”losing both the mother and the babyโ€”was gut-wrenching.

Even so, it wasnโ€™t Lenaโ€™s fault. I knew her too well. She respected life in a way most people didnโ€™t. If there was even the tiniest chance to save someone, sheโ€™d fight for it.

โ€œSo, what youโ€™re saying is the surgeon didnโ€™t screw up?โ€ I asked.

โ€œExactly,โ€ Lena said, sighing. โ€œBut that doesnโ€™t matter. Someone died, and the family canโ€™t accept it. They keep saying everything was fine until she came hereโ€”like itโ€™s our fault sheโ€™s gone.โ€ Her voice wavered, frustration and sadness written all over her face.

Iโ€™d read about situations like this. These so-called โ€œmedical disputesโ€ could ruin careers.

โ€œDr. Daleโ€™s already suspended, under investigation,โ€ Lena said with a heavy sigh. โ€œEven if they clear her, her reputationโ€™s trashed. Sheโ€™s done.โ€

I could see the guilt all over her face. If Lena hadnโ€™t switched shifts, Dr. Dale wouldnโ€™t have been on duty. None of this wouldโ€™ve touched her.

โ€œNo one couldโ€™ve seen this coming,โ€ I said, trying to make her feel better.

Lena let out a slow breath, her voice steady but tired. โ€œWhen the storm hits, all you can do is stand and take it.โ€

Then, she pivoted. โ€œDemiโ€™s doing great. Healing fast. And her mental stateโ€™s solid, which is rare for girls whoโ€™ve been throughโ€ฆ well, you know.โ€

Demiโ€™s calm didnโ€™t surprise me. Sheโ€™d been bracing for the worst long before things hit the fan.

โ€œAnd Hayden? Still faking unconsciousness?โ€ Lena suddenly asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s awake,โ€ I said, keeping it short. She had enough on her plate.

Lena nodded, but I could tell her thoughts were stuck on the whole incident. I couldnโ€™t do much, so I figured giving her space was the best move.

โ€œIโ€™m good. Just came to check on you. Iโ€™ll go see Demi now,โ€ I said, heading for the door.

โ€œIf you need anything, let me know,โ€ she said, her go-to sendoff.

Before leaving, I glanced at her arm. โ€œIf that bruise gets worse, get it looked at, okay?โ€

After Keira left, Lena tugged her collar to peek at the damage. The spot where sheโ€™d been hit was already a nasty, dark bruise. Her bones were fine, but the soft tissue had taken a hit. Staring at it, something about the mark triggered a weird rush of emotions. On impulse, she snapped a picture and sent it to Nate.

No response.

Lena decided to video call him, but he declined almost immediately. Then came the one-word reply: [Busy.]

Busy? Seriously? Not even a โ€œyou good?โ€

The bitterness hit like a cold draft. She sighed, glancing at her shoulder again. โ€˜Guess itโ€™s up to me to get some ointment later,โ€™ she thought, still stewing, when a knock interrupted her spiral.

โ€œCome in,โ€ she called.

The door opened, and in walked Aaron. He stopped short when he saw her straightening her clothes. His expression shifted.

โ€œUncle Aaron?โ€ Lena blinked, caught off guard.

He didnโ€™t say much. Just crossed the room, dropped a bag on her desk, and said, โ€œFor the bruise. Ask someone to help you apply it.โ€

Lena stared at the bag, her words stuck somewhere in her throat. Before she could get them out, he was already heading for the door.

โ€œUncle Aaron,โ€ she called, stopping him in his tracks.

He turned, eyebrows raised in a silent โ€œwhat now?โ€

โ€œWhyโ€™d you come to our department today?โ€

For a second, he hesitatedโ€”his Adamโ€™s apple bobbing.
