Listen to this chapter:

Sasha sobbed so hard I could barely understand her. โ€œI took Nina to the mall after kindergarten,โ€ she choked out. โ€œShe was right next to me while I was shopping, but I got a phone call. When I turned around, she was gone.โ€

I frowned. โ€œIf it happened in the mall, didnโ€™t they check the security cameras?โ€

โ€œThey did,โ€ she hiccuped. โ€œThey showed her running after someone. Someone who looked exactly like you.โ€

I let out a bitter laugh. โ€œYeah, no. Iโ€™ve been in the hospital for days. Havenโ€™t even stepped near a mall.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Sasha mumbled. โ€œI saw the footage. Itโ€™s not youโ€”itโ€™s justโ€ฆ someone who looks like you. Nina mustโ€™ve thought it was you and followed them.โ€

Perfect. Trouble finds me even when Iโ€™m doing nothing but breathing.

Still, her words left me uneasy. A Keira look-alike just happens to show up in front of Nina? Was it randomโ€”or intentional?

โ€œKeira,โ€ Sasha begged, โ€œdo you have anyone in your life who could look like you? Relatives? Friends? Anyone?โ€

Iโ€™m an orphanโ€”what relatives? The only family Iโ€™d reconnected with were Uncle Damien and Aunt Abby. The only person anyone ever said I resembled was their daughter, Narelle. And she wasโ€ฆ gone. Long gone. No one else could possibly fit the bill.

โ€œLook, Thorstenโ€™s already offering a reward, and the cops are all over this,โ€ I said, trying to calm her down. โ€œWith the internet doing its thing, someoneโ€™s bound to find her soon.โ€

โ€œAre you kidding me?โ€ Sasha practically screamed. โ€œThatโ€™s my daughter! My flesh and blood! You think I can just sit here and wait?โ€

I got itโ€”Sasha was losing it. I let her scream it out, holding the phone away until she was done. Once she ran out of steam, I quietly ended the call.

โ€œShe suspects you?โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice cut through my thoughts. He was standing right there, obviously having heard the whole drama.

I sighed, Sashaโ€™s words still swirling in my head. โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter if she does. What matters is that someoneโ€™s using my face to stir the pot. Even if Thorsten and Sasha believe me, this is still going to be a mess.โ€

โ€œWhy would anyone use you?โ€ Hayden asked.

I squinted at him. โ€œWhat are you saying? That this is some distraction tactic?โ€

He didnโ€™t answer directly. โ€œThe cops will come looking for you soon.โ€ His tone made it clear what he meant.

And then it clicked. My jaw dropped. โ€œOh my Godโ€”it was you, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

Hayden grabbed my hand, his grip steady. โ€œWayne and his crew are hunting for the evidence Iโ€™ve collected. Right now, with you as the prime suspect, theyโ€™ll back off. The cops keeping tabs on you? Thatโ€™s the safest place you can be.โ€

I couldnโ€™t believe this sneaky mastermind. He really went there with this move.

But since it was for my own good, I let it slide.

Still, the whole Nina thing wouldnโ€™t stop eating at me. I asked, โ€œSo, Nina. Did you have someone take her?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

I believed him. Hayden wasnโ€™t the kind of guy to mess with a kid. But if it wasnโ€™t him, then who? โ€œThen whoโ€™s behind this?โ€

โ€œIt was Sasha. No idea what her endgame is, but she staged her daughterโ€™s kidnapping. And because of your connection to Nina, she made sure to involve someone who looks like you, just to throw the cops your way.โ€

I let out a bitter laugh. โ€œWow. You really know how to work a situation in your favor, huh?โ€

โ€œKiki, Iโ€™ve told you beforeโ€”Iโ€™m not letting anything happen to you.โ€ His gaze locked onto mine. โ€œIโ€™ve spent my life protecting people, but this time? Youโ€™re my priority.โ€
