Sasha sobbed so hard I could barely understand her. โI took Nina to the mall after kindergarten,โ she choked out. โShe was right next to me while I was shopping, but I got a phone call. When I turned around, she was gone.โ
I frowned. โIf it happened in the mall, didnโt they check the security cameras?โ
โThey did,โ she hiccuped. โThey showed her running after someone. Someone who looked exactly like you.โ
I let out a bitter laugh. โYeah, no. Iโve been in the hospital for days. Havenโt even stepped near a mall.โ
โI know,โ Sasha mumbled. โI saw the footage. Itโs not youโitโs justโฆ someone who looks like you. Nina mustโve thought it was you and followed them.โ
Perfect. Trouble finds me even when Iโm doing nothing but breathing.
Still, her words left me uneasy. A Keira look-alike just happens to show up in front of Nina? Was it randomโor intentional?
โKeira,โ Sasha begged, โdo you have anyone in your life who could look like you? Relatives? Friends? Anyone?โ
Iโm an orphanโwhat relatives? The only family Iโd reconnected with were Uncle Damien and Aunt Abby. The only person anyone ever said I resembled was their daughter, Narelle. And she wasโฆ gone. Long gone. No one else could possibly fit the bill.
โLook, Thorstenโs already offering a reward, and the cops are all over this,โ I said, trying to calm her down. โWith the internet doing its thing, someoneโs bound to find her soon.โ
โAre you kidding me?โ Sasha practically screamed. โThatโs my daughter! My flesh and blood! You think I can just sit here and wait?โ
I got itโSasha was losing it. I let her scream it out, holding the phone away until she was done. Once she ran out of steam, I quietly ended the call.
โShe suspects you?โ Haydenโs voice cut through my thoughts. He was standing right there, obviously having heard the whole drama.
I sighed, Sashaโs words still swirling in my head. โDoesnโt matter if she does. What matters is that someoneโs using my face to stir the pot. Even if Thorsten and Sasha believe me, this is still going to be a mess.โ
โWhy would anyone use you?โ Hayden asked.
I squinted at him. โWhat are you saying? That this is some distraction tactic?โ
He didnโt answer directly. โThe cops will come looking for you soon.โ His tone made it clear what he meant.
And then it clicked. My jaw dropped. โOh my Godโit was you, wasnโt it?โ
Hayden grabbed my hand, his grip steady. โWayne and his crew are hunting for the evidence Iโve collected. Right now, with you as the prime suspect, theyโll back off. The cops keeping tabs on you? Thatโs the safest place you can be.โ
I couldnโt believe this sneaky mastermind. He really went there with this move.
But since it was for my own good, I let it slide.
Still, the whole Nina thing wouldnโt stop eating at me. I asked, โSo, Nina. Did you have someone take her?โ
โNo.โ
I believed him. Hayden wasnโt the kind of guy to mess with a kid. But if it wasnโt him, then who? โThen whoโs behind this?โ
โIt was Sasha. No idea what her endgame is, but she staged her daughterโs kidnapping. And because of your connection to Nina, she made sure to involve someone who looks like you, just to throw the cops your way.โ
I let out a bitter laugh. โWow. You really know how to work a situation in your favor, huh?โ
โKiki, Iโve told you beforeโIโm not letting anything happen to you.โ His gaze locked onto mine. โIโve spent my life protecting people, but this time? Youโre my priority.โ
