Chapter 738

Hayden bopped me on the noseโ€”twice. โ€œCanโ€™t you just, I donโ€™t know, play dumb for once?โ€

I gave him a hard no, shaking my head. โ€œDonโ€™t dodge. Spill the truth.โ€

Before I could shake my head off my shoulders, he cupped my face, steadying me. โ€œStop. Youโ€™ll make yourself dizzy.โ€

โ€œThen stop stalling and give me the real reason,โ€ I shot back, locking eyes with him.

Hereโ€™s the thing about Hayden: when he lies, his eyes go flat, like a bad lightbulb. Back when he told me he didnโ€™t love me? Yeah, totally missed it then. But now? Not a chance.

โ€œYouโ€™ve figured out who was behind the car crash, havenโ€™t you?โ€ he asked, casually brushing my lashes.

So, he did know.

โ€œYour lashes are so long. Just like when you were a kid,โ€ he added, clearly trying to derail me.

Cute, but not happening. I pushed forward. โ€œSo basically, you got hurt on purpose. It was all for Cole, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œ,โ€ he admitted. โ€œI couldnโ€™t let Cole think I wasnโ€™t the real Xander.โ€

โ€œWayne already knows,โ€ I countered. But then it hit me: Wayne and Cole might be bros in crime, but they werenโ€™t exactly besties. Wayne knowing didnโ€™t mean heโ€™d tell Cole.

โ€œSo who is Xander Zane (the identity Hayden is using now), really?โ€ I asked. This wasnโ€™t the first time his name had popped up, but I hadnโ€™t pushed before. Now, I couldnโ€™t ignore it.

โ€œA pimp. You know what that means, right?โ€

I froze. Oh, I knew. I just wasnโ€™t ready for that answer. Hayden, playing pretend as a pimp? Wild. But, no wonder he cracked Demiโ€™s DracoLux nightmare so fast.

โ€œI thought Xander was just some male escort,โ€ I muttered, still trying to process. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize he had a major role behind all this filth.โ€

Haydenโ€™s face darkened. โ€œHeโ€™s not the top guy. Thereโ€™s someone above himโ€”a real kingpin. This guyโ€™s reach spans dozens of countries, and his network runs deep.โ€

A multinational crime ring? Seriously? It was mind-blowing and flat-out terrifying. The world was supposed to be beautiful, but nopeโ€”parasites like this never quit ruining it.

I glanced at Hayden, and a cold shiver hit me. Not because of himโ€”but his face.

Hayden, the guy I admired and loved, had a doppelgรคnger out there destroying lives, especially womenโ€™s. The thought alone made my stomach twist.

He caught the shift in my expression instantly. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

I shook my head, barely. โ€œKeep going.โ€

โ€œAre you scared?โ€ he asked, proving yet again he could read me like a book.

It wasnโ€™t fear, thoughโ€”it was shock, horror, helplessness, all wrapped in a giant, awful bow. If Hayden hadnโ€™t told me, I never wouldโ€™ve guessed such darkness simmered under what seemed like an ordinary world.

I shifted, resting my head against his chest. He pulled me closer. โ€œXander came to DracoLux pretending to scout talent. Officially, heโ€™s just a โ€˜male model,โ€™ but behind the scenes? Heโ€™s handpicking people.โ€

This was the first Iโ€™d heard of such a grotesque โ€œselection process.โ€ I scoffed before I could stop it. โ€œSo, what? They only take the pretty ones?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€

That one word hit me harder than it should have.

He kept going. โ€œTheyโ€™re running high-end trafficking. The better someone looks, the higher the price. And focusing on โ€˜premium goodsโ€™ lowers their risks.โ€

It was like selling luxury itemsโ€”but with people. The thought made me want to scream. Shock, outrage, and a gut-wrenching sadness tangled inside me, leaving me speechless.
