Chapter 760

He spun her around, their laughter cutting through the chaos of the airport like a rom-com on full blast. The crowd? Totally eating it up. A few claps, some knowing smilesโ€”yeah, they were that couple.

Lena clung to Nate, grinning like sheโ€™d just won the lottery. Nothing else mattered. Not even Retta, who strutted out of arrivals with her patented death glare. Lena clocked her but brushed it off. Retta could sulk all she wanted; Lena was too wrapped up in her โ€œmain character moment.โ€

โ€œDr. Lane, your boyfriendโ€™s so handsome!โ€ a voice called. Turning, Lena spotted a woman juggling a baby. Oh, rightโ€”one of her patients. Flashing a smug smile, she leaned into Nate. โ€œOf course he is. Heโ€™s mine.โ€

โ€œCongrats! And I hope you two have an adorable baby soonโ€”just like mine!โ€ the woman added, grinning.

โ€œNoted!โ€ Lena shot back with a playful thumbs-up.

Unbothered by the interruption, they walked out hand in hand.

โ€œYouโ€™re still mad at me, huh?โ€ Nate asked, his voice cautious. He wasnโ€™t clueless; he knew heโ€™d screwed up. But often, his work left him with no choice.

โ€œTotally,โ€ Lena said with a nod. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve already forgiven you.โ€

To everyone else, Lena was a lifesaving doctor with a superhero glow. But to Nate? She was just his girl, craving rom-com moments and sugary snacks.

He kissed her fingers. โ€œMy girlfriend is so forgiving.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get used to it,โ€ Lena warned. Forgiving wasnโ€™t her thingโ€”not outside the job, anyway. She didnโ€™t want to play the saint here. With Nate, she wanted to be selfish, spoiled even.

Nate knew exactly what she wanted, but life didnโ€™t always let him deliver. Still, he tried. โ€œLena, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want apologies. I want today. Take me out for something delicious, watch a movie with me, go cyclingโ€”everything Iโ€™ve been dreaming about while youโ€™ve been gone.โ€

For once, she let it all outโ€”the little things that had been quietly breaking her heart. Like when she saw couples riding bikes together and wished Nate were there, too.

Guilt flickered across his face, but he didnโ€™t let it ruin the moment. Instead, he smiled and said, โ€œLetโ€™s do all of it.โ€

Later, Lena held out a piece of her roasted sweet potato, dripping with cheese. โ€œThis is everything. Try it!โ€

Nate took a bite and nodded. โ€œNot bad.โ€

โ€œNext stop, movie night,โ€ Nate suggested, casually taking the lead. A date without a movie? Total flop vibes. Weirdly, though, theyโ€™d never actually watched one together before.

โ€œCan you even sit still for two hours?โ€ Lena teased.

โ€œI can today. Iโ€™m all yours,โ€ Nate said, silencing his phone and sliding it into his pocket. โ€œYou sure this wonโ€™t blow up in your face later?โ€ Lena asked, half-skeptical.

Nate pulled her closer, his arm snug around her waist. โ€œNo work till tomorrow. Today, Iโ€™m just your boyfriend.โ€

And just like that, every bit of frustration sheโ€™d carriedโ€”the missed calls, lonely nightsโ€”faded away. It wasnโ€™t that Nate didnโ€™t care. It was just that, as a heart specialist, life-and-death emergencies didnโ€™t exactly wait for his personal plans.
