Chapter 765
Glancing at his watch, Nate realized it was nearing midnight. His fingers hovered for a moment before he dialed Keiraโs number.
โKeira, is Lena with you?โ
โNoโฆ why?โ Keiraโs voice was thick with sleep, but her tone sharpened. โWhatโs going on? You canโt find Lena?โ
โI just finished up, but I canโt reach her. Maybe sheโs home,โ Nate replied, keeping his voice steady before quickly ending the call.
Next, he dialed Lenaโs dad. He and Mr. Lane had exchanged numbers during a previous visit, so he knew it was worth a shot.
โNate, whatโs up?โ Mr. Laneโs voice answered, groggy.
โHas Lena come home?โ Nate kept his tone light.
โNo, she hasnโt been home in a while. Why? Did something happen? You two fight?โ Mr. Lane sounded casual.
โNo, no fight. I just got back today,โ Nate said quickly, but Mr. Lane wasnโt fooled. He could tell Nate wouldnโt have called unless he was desperate.
After a few pointed questions, Nate cracked.
โThis is serious!โ Mr. Laneโs voice went razor-sharp. โIf somethingโs happened to my daughter, how could you not tell me right away?!โ
Nate froze, stammering, โShe was fine when I last saw herโฆ at the hospital.โ
โI donโt care where you last saw her! I care where she is NOW!โ Mr. Lane snapped, slamming the phone down.
Mrs. Lane stirred. โWhatโs going on with Lena?โ she asked, her voice tight.
Mr. Lane didnโt answer at first, redialing Lenaโs phone. Still nothing. He finally turned to his wife, grim. โSheโs not at the hospital, not home, and we canโt reach her.โ
โKeira,โ Mrs. Lane said quickly. โTheyโre close. Maybe she went to see her?โ
Without a word, Mr. Lane dialed Keiraโs number.
Chapter 766
For some reason, Iโd been extra tired tonight. Nateโs call barely registered โ I just rolled over and went back to sleep. But when Mr. Lane called, the grogginess disappeared instantly.
โNo, I havenโt seen Lena,โ I said, sitting up. โIโm at Cloudscape Monastery.โ
Silence.
โMr. Lane?โ I pressed, my stomach twisting. โWhatโs going on? Is something wrong with Lena?โ
His voice came back heavy, edged with panic. โWe canโt find her. Her phoneโs off.โ
โMaybe sheโs asleep?โ I offered, but even as I said it, I knew better. Lena was the lightest sleeper Iโd ever met. She always kept her phone by her bed, ready for emergencies. A single buzz could wake her, so this? This wasnโt normal.
โIโll keep looking,โ Mr. Lane said, his voice tight. โKeira, if you think of anyone she might be with, call them.โ
I agreed, but my gut was already screaming.
I called Lenaโs number twice. Straight to voicemail. Reached out to her hospital โ nothing. Lena wouldnโt just disappear. Then I remembered that snake package she got the other day. A cold knot formed in my chest.
Without wasting another second, I dialed Cole. Even though it was late, I knew Cole thrived on nightlife. If anyone was still up, itโd be him.
The phone rang forever before he finally picked up, sounding lazy and annoyed. โKeira, are you out of your mind? Calling me now? If I lose my rhythm in bed, are you planning to make it up to me?โ
I bit back a curse, forcing myself to stay focused. โWhereโs Lena?โ
