Chapter 772
I ran into Aaron in the hospital lobby; he carried a bag that looked packed with ointments.
โWhereโs Lena?โ I asked, skipping formalities. Calling him โMr. Aceโ felt too stiff, and โUncle Aaronโ? Yeah, no. He wasnโt much older than me or Lena, so that was a hard pass.
โSheโs upstairs getting checked,โ Aaron replied, glancing at his watch. โShe should be done by now.โ
โIโll go check on her,โ I said, heading toward the elevators.
โWait.โ Aaron held out the bag. โHer wrists and ankles are bruised. Use this.โ
I took the bag. โYouโre not coming up?โ
โNo,โ he said. โIโll wait in the car. When Gabriel and Carol are done, can you help send them downstairs?โ
He meant Lenaโs parents. His response left me confused, but since we werenโt close, I didnโt want to pry. Still, I couldnโt stop myself from asking, โHow did you even find her?โ
โIt wasnโt hard if you really wanted to find her.โ
The words made sense, but something about them didnโt sit right. Nate and I had been tearing the city apart looking for her and still came up empty.
โWow, guess you care about Lena more than the rest of us,โ I teased.
He didnโt flinchโjust nodded slightly before turning and walking off, his long coat sweeping dramatically behind him. Not gonna lie, the guy had that whole tall, dark, and handsome vibe down.
When I got to Lenaโs floor, I spotted her with Nate. And yeah, it clicked immediately why Aaron had decided to stay downstairsโNate was already here.
Lena spotted me and pouted playfully. โRea, gimme a hug!โ
I hugged her. โGuess itโs trueโafter chaos comes good vibes.โ
We cracked a few jokes, shaking off some of the stress from her kidnapping.
โMr. Lane, Mrs. Lane,โ I said with a smile, โyou guys should head home and rest. Mr. Ace is downstairs waiting to take you.โ
โAlright, weโll go,โ Gabriel said, giving Lena a worried glance. He seemed to realize that with Nate here, there wasnโt much else they could do.
โIโll see you out,โ I offered, remembering Aaronโs request. Plus, it gave Lena and Nate some time to actually talk.
โI can do it,โ Nate volunteered, stepping forward.
โNah, you stay with your injured girlfriend.โ I handed him the ointment Aaron had sent up. โHere, her uncle says to make sure she actually uses this.โ I winked at Lena as I spoke.
Her mom gave a final round of instructions before they left, still fussing over Lena like moms do. I closed the door behind them, giving them space.
Carol sighed. โWeโre lucky Aaron was there. If not for himโฆ Lena might haveโฆโ
She trailed off, and I could only nod. Lucky, indeed.
โMrs. Lane, itโs over now,โ I said gently, linking my arm with hers.
She huffed. โIf only Lenaโs boyfriend lived closer.โ
Clearly, she wasnโt thrilled Nate couldnโt swoop in right away.
โThis is just temporary. Once theyโre married, itโll all work out,โ I said, trying to smooth things over.
Carol stayed quiet, but the tension in her shoulders eased a little. When we reached the lobby, Aaron was already waiting.
He greeted Gabriel and Carol and held the car door open for them. After they climbed in, he nodded at me. โThanks for the help.โ
I nodded back and watched as they drove away.
Now that Nate and Lena had their moment upstairs, it didnโt feel right to barge back in. Instead, I sank onto a nearby flowerbed, letting the evening air settle around me.
Upstairs, Nate dabbed ointment on Lenaโs scraped-up arm. โDoes it hurt?โ he asked, his voice soft.
