Chapter 772

I ran into Aaron in the hospital lobby; he carried a bag that looked packed with ointments.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Lena?โ€ I asked, skipping formalities. Calling him โ€œMr. Aceโ€ felt too stiff, and โ€œUncle Aaronโ€? Yeah, no. He wasnโ€™t much older than me or Lena, so that was a hard pass.

โ€œSheโ€™s upstairs getting checked,โ€ Aaron replied, glancing at his watch. โ€œShe should be done by now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll go check on her,โ€ I said, heading toward the elevators.

โ€œWait.โ€ Aaron held out the bag. โ€œHer wrists and ankles are bruised. Use this.โ€

I took the bag. โ€œYouโ€™re not coming up?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ll wait in the car. When Gabriel and Carol are done, can you help send them downstairs?โ€

He meant Lenaโ€™s parents. His response left me confused, but since we werenโ€™t close, I didnโ€™t want to pry. Still, I couldnโ€™t stop myself from asking, โ€œHow did you even find her?โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t hard if you really wanted to find her.โ€

The words made sense, but something about them didnโ€™t sit right. Nate and I had been tearing the city apart looking for her and still came up empty.

โ€œWow, guess you care about Lena more than the rest of us,โ€ I teased.

He didnโ€™t flinchโ€”just nodded slightly before turning and walking off, his long coat sweeping dramatically behind him. Not gonna lie, the guy had that whole tall, dark, and handsome vibe down.

When I got to Lenaโ€™s floor, I spotted her with Nate. And yeah, it clicked immediately why Aaron had decided to stay downstairsโ€”Nate was already here.

Lena spotted me and pouted playfully. โ€œRea, gimme a hug!โ€

I hugged her. โ€œGuess itโ€™s trueโ€”after chaos comes good vibes.โ€

We cracked a few jokes, shaking off some of the stress from her kidnapping.

โ€œMr. Lane, Mrs. Lane,โ€ I said with a smile, โ€œyou guys should head home and rest. Mr. Ace is downstairs waiting to take you.โ€

โ€œAlright, weโ€™ll go,โ€ Gabriel said, giving Lena a worried glance. He seemed to realize that with Nate here, there wasnโ€™t much else they could do.

โ€œIโ€™ll see you out,โ€ I offered, remembering Aaronโ€™s request. Plus, it gave Lena and Nate some time to actually talk.

โ€œI can do it,โ€ Nate volunteered, stepping forward.

โ€œNah, you stay with your injured girlfriend.โ€ I handed him the ointment Aaron had sent up. โ€œHere, her uncle says to make sure she actually uses this.โ€ I winked at Lena as I spoke.

Her mom gave a final round of instructions before they left, still fussing over Lena like moms do. I closed the door behind them, giving them space.

Carol sighed. โ€œWeโ€™re lucky Aaron was there. If not for himโ€ฆ Lena might haveโ€ฆโ€

She trailed off, and I could only nod. Lucky, indeed.

โ€œMrs. Lane, itโ€™s over now,โ€ I said gently, linking my arm with hers.

She huffed. โ€œIf only Lenaโ€™s boyfriend lived closer.โ€

Clearly, she wasnโ€™t thrilled Nate couldnโ€™t swoop in right away.

โ€œThis is just temporary. Once theyโ€™re married, itโ€™ll all work out,โ€ I said, trying to smooth things over.

Carol stayed quiet, but the tension in her shoulders eased a little. When we reached the lobby, Aaron was already waiting.

He greeted Gabriel and Carol and held the car door open for them. After they climbed in, he nodded at me. โ€œThanks for the help.โ€

I nodded back and watched as they drove away.

Now that Nate and Lena had their moment upstairs, it didnโ€™t feel right to barge back in. Instead, I sank onto a nearby flowerbed, letting the evening air settle around me.

Upstairs, Nate dabbed ointment on Lenaโ€™s scraped-up arm. โ€œDoes it hurt?โ€ he asked, his voice soft.
