Chapter 781

The doctor handed me a tiny bottle. โ€œThis is the medication they used. Mr. Yule gave it to Mrs. Yule firstโ€ฆ then took it himself.โ€

My hands tightened around the bottle as I read the label, my throat like sandpaper. โ€œThey mustโ€™ve been in so much pain to make a choice like that,โ€ I whispered.

Uncle Damien had hinted at something like this before, but I thought it was just a โ€œwhat-ifโ€ plan. Never in a million years did I think heโ€™d actually go through with it. The idea of him sparing Aunt Abby from suffering and then following herโ€ฆ It didnโ€™t feel real.

โ€œThis is the letter Mr. Yule left for you,โ€ the doctor added, offering me an envelope.

I unfolded it, my heart sinking as Uncle Damienโ€™s handwriting filled my vision:

Rea,

Iโ€™m sorry I canโ€™t stay to take care of you anymore. Ever since Narelle passed, I decided this would be the way Iโ€™d go. Abby and I agreedโ€”it was what we wanted.

Please donโ€™t be sad, and donโ€™t think Iโ€™m selfish. I just couldnโ€™t stay in this world any longer. Abby and I are going to see Narelle.

Having you in my life these past days meant everything. But I couldnโ€™t let go of my daughter. I had to be with her.

After weโ€™re gone, donโ€™t blame the hospital or anyone else. Cremate us and bury our ashes with Narelleโ€™s, so the three of us can finally be together.

You were the only family we had left, Rea. Thatโ€™s why everythingโ€”our home, our possessionsโ€”itโ€™s all yours now. I know you donโ€™t care about stuff like that, so if you donโ€™t need it, maybe donate it to someone who does!

If thereโ€™s a next life, I hope our family gets another chanceโ€”together, happy, and whole.

Love,

Uncle Damien

By the time I finished reading, tears blurred the words, dripping onto the paper and smudging the ink. But crying wouldnโ€™t change anything.

I followed Uncle Damienโ€™s wishes. I had him and Aunt Abby cremated and buried their ashes with Narelleโ€™s.

The day of the burial was unrealโ€”perfectly blue skies, a soft, warm breeze, and sunlight that felt like a hug. It was like the universe was celebrating their reunion.

Not every death leaves regrets, I realized. Some bring peace.

โ€œUncle Damien, Aunt Abby, Narelleโ€ฆ I hope youโ€™re happy together forever,โ€ I whispered before walking away.

I didnโ€™t keep a cent of Uncle Damienโ€™s inheritance. Instead, I donated everything and started a foundation in Narelleโ€™s name to help people who couldnโ€™t afford medical care.

When Lena called, I was wrapping up the foundationโ€™s paperwork.

โ€œRea, Nateโ€™s leaving the day after tomorrow,โ€ she said. โ€œHe wanted me to remind you to schedule your Aunt Abbyโ€™s surgery for tomorrow.โ€

I looked up at the impossibly blue sky, clouds fluffy and unreal, like a painting. โ€œThereโ€™s no need,โ€ I said softly.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ she asked, confused.

โ€œTheyโ€™re gone,โ€ I said. โ€œTheyโ€™re somewhere better now. Somewhere without sickness. A place where they can finally be whole again.โ€

โ€œWhat? Rea, I donโ€™t get it.โ€

Since Uncle Damien and Aunt Abby passed, a heavy ache had settled in my chest. I took a breath, steadying myself. โ€œUncle Damien and Aunt Abby left this world together, hand in hand. They were happy.โ€

She was silent for a long time.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ I added, my tone calm. โ€œI saw it myself. They lookedโ€ฆ peaceful. Together.โ€

โ€œWas it because of Aunt Abbyโ€™s illness?โ€ she finally asked.

That was part of it. Uncle Damien couldnโ€™t stand to watch her suffer. But I didnโ€™t say that out loud.

Lena sighed. โ€œIf only Nate wasnโ€™t so busyโ€ฆโ€
