Chapter 789
โToo busyโฆ or donโt want to, you donโt have to,โ he said. I got what he meant and gave him a small smile. โIโm not forcing myself.โ His eyes softened, and for a fleeting moment, I thought I saw tears.
โThank you,โ he said, his voice sincere. I blinked, caught off guard. He was thanking me for making peace, for agreeing to see his parents. But there wasnโt much else to say. I looped my arm through Lenaโs. โWe need to see Grandpa Edison. Goodbye, Jace.โ
โGoodbye,โ he murmured.
As soon as we were out of earshot, Lena turned to me, smirking. โYou and your ex are getting pretty cozy these days. If Hayden doesnโt show up soon, I wouldnโt be shocked if you two rekindled things.โ
I shot her a look. โDo I seem that desperate? Like I canโt survive without a guy?โ
โIโm just saying,โ Lena said, shrugging. โYou might get soft. Jace has a way of playing the emotional card.โ
She wasnโt wrong. Lena had always been firmly Team Hayden.
โWhat I donโt get,โ I said, โis why youโre so harsh on Jace. Both he and Hayden betrayed me, right? Why do you hate him so much? Did he, like, curse your family or something?โ
Lena pinched me hard, and I yelped. โTheir betrayals werenโt the same. Hayden faked it to protect youโit was all a front. Jace? He actually cheated with his friendโs wife.โ
Her tone turned serious. โRea, donโt let your scars heal just to forget the pain.โ
I let out a bitter smile. โI wonโt.โ
โI believe you wonโt,โ Lena said with a small smile. She loved to tease, but I knew she had my back when it counted.
We walked into the banquet hall, where Lenaโs grandpa, Edison Ace, stood in a regal purple-and-gold suit, happily accepting gifts like the family patriarch he was. When he saw the artwork Iโd brought, his eyes lit up. โThis is specialโI like it a lot!โ
I couldnโt help but feel a little embarrassed. Sure, it was a nice gesture, but it wasnโt that remarkable. Lindey had gifted something similar earlier. Edison was just an expert at making people feel good about themselves.
โLena, whereโs Nate? Why didnโt he come?โ Edison asked, glancing at her curiously.
Lena nudged me lightly and answered smoothly, โGrandpa, I didnโt invite him. I just wanted to come spend time with you.โ
Edison wasnโt fooledโmy presence didnโt exactly explain Nateโs absenceโbut he let it slide, chuckling softly.
โGrandpa, you should get back to receiving gifts,โ Lena said quickly, clearly wanting to dodge any follow-up questions. โIโm going to grab something to eat with Rea.โ
โGo ahead,โ Edison replied, his tone casual but commanding. โBut donโt go too far. Iโll need you both for something later.โ
Lena and I exchanged a glance.
โYou donโt need us to cut the cake, do you?โ she joked, grinning mischievously.
Edison tapped her lightly on the forehead. โYou little rascal! I can handle a knife just fine. I want your advice.โ
โAdvice on what? Rekindling things with an old flame?โ Lena quipped effortlessly. She didnโt even flinch at the thought of her grandma overhearing and smacking her.
โYouโre getting bolder by the minute,โ Edison said, wagging a finger at her, though he looked more amused than annoyed. โNo, I want your help finding a wife for Aaron.โ
Lena and I exchanged wide-eyed looks, caught totally off guard.
Edison sighed dramatically. โHeโs in his thirties and still hasnโt had a girlfriend. Do you know what people are saying? They think heโs unnatural. Some even speculate he might be into men.โ
I had to bite back laughter, but Lena didnโt bother trying: She burst out laughing.

โGrandpa, maybe theyโre right!โ
โWatch it!โ Edison warned, though his chuckle betrayed him. He nodded toward a group of well-dressed women mingling nearby. โYou two, go check them out for me.โ
โBetter hurry, Lena, or youโll lose your chance,โ I teased, nudging her.
โNot again!โ Lena groaned, raising her hand like she was about to smack me.
โAlright, alright, Iโll stop!โ I said, laughing. Then I got curious. โBut really, why hasnโt your uncle found anyone yet?โ
Lena let out a soft humph. โHow would I know? I donโt talk to him much these days.โ
โEver since the, uhโฆ bathroom incident?โ
โExactly,โ Lena sighed. โAfter that, it was like we justโฆ stopped talking. If only I could erase that moment from my memory.โ
โYou stopped talking because it did leave a mark,โ I said, nudging her. โPeople donโt hang onto stuff like that unless it means something.โ
โOkay, Freud,โ Lena snapped. โNo oneโs hanging onto anything. If he hadnโt come back, I wouldnโt even remember it.โ
Sure, because things you really forget donโt pop up so easily. The way she said it? Definitely carved into her memory.
Lena and I wandered the room, scanning the crowd of elegant young ladies. None of them seemed like a match for Aaron to me.
โWhat about you? Spot anyone promising?โ I asked Lena.
She shook her head firmly. โNot a single one. Iโm confident Uncle Aaron wouldnโt be into any of them.โ
I held up my hand for a high five. โGlad we agree.โ
โLetโs go report back to Grandpa,โ Lena said, leading the way.
But as we reached the entrance to the hall, we caught Edison and Aaronโs voices drifting from inside.
