Chapter 789

โ€œToo busyโ€ฆ or donโ€™t want to, you donโ€™t have to,โ€ he said. I got what he meant and gave him a small smile. โ€œIโ€™m not forcing myself.โ€ His eyes softened, and for a fleeting moment, I thought I saw tears.

โ€œThank you,โ€ he said, his voice sincere. I blinked, caught off guard. He was thanking me for making peace, for agreeing to see his parents. But there wasnโ€™t much else to say. I looped my arm through Lenaโ€™s. โ€œWe need to see Grandpa Edison. Goodbye, Jace.โ€

โ€œGoodbye,โ€ he murmured.

As soon as we were out of earshot, Lena turned to me, smirking. โ€œYou and your ex are getting pretty cozy these days. If Hayden doesnโ€™t show up soon, I wouldnโ€™t be shocked if you two rekindled things.โ€

I shot her a look. โ€œDo I seem that desperate? Like I canโ€™t survive without a guy?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just saying,โ€ Lena said, shrugging. โ€œYou might get soft. Jace has a way of playing the emotional card.โ€

She wasnโ€™t wrong. Lena had always been firmly Team Hayden.

โ€œWhat I donโ€™t get,โ€ I said, โ€œis why youโ€™re so harsh on Jace. Both he and Hayden betrayed me, right? Why do you hate him so much? Did he, like, curse your family or something?โ€

Lena pinched me hard, and I yelped. โ€œTheir betrayals werenโ€™t the same. Hayden faked it to protect youโ€”it was all a front. Jace? He actually cheated with his friendโ€™s wife.โ€

Her tone turned serious. โ€œRea, donโ€™t let your scars heal just to forget the pain.โ€

I let out a bitter smile. โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI believe you wonโ€™t,โ€ Lena said with a small smile. She loved to tease, but I knew she had my back when it counted.

We walked into the banquet hall, where Lenaโ€™s grandpa, Edison Ace, stood in a regal purple-and-gold suit, happily accepting gifts like the family patriarch he was. When he saw the artwork Iโ€™d brought, his eyes lit up. โ€œThis is specialโ€”I like it a lot!โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but feel a little embarrassed. Sure, it was a nice gesture, but it wasnโ€™t that remarkable. Lindey had gifted something similar earlier. Edison was just an expert at making people feel good about themselves.

โ€œLena, whereโ€™s Nate? Why didnโ€™t he come?โ€ Edison asked, glancing at her curiously.

Lena nudged me lightly and answered smoothly, โ€œGrandpa, I didnโ€™t invite him. I just wanted to come spend time with you.โ€

Edison wasnโ€™t fooledโ€”my presence didnโ€™t exactly explain Nateโ€™s absenceโ€”but he let it slide, chuckling softly.

โ€œGrandpa, you should get back to receiving gifts,โ€ Lena said quickly, clearly wanting to dodge any follow-up questions. โ€œIโ€™m going to grab something to eat with Rea.โ€

โ€œGo ahead,โ€ Edison replied, his tone casual but commanding. โ€œBut donโ€™t go too far. Iโ€™ll need you both for something later.โ€

Lena and I exchanged a glance.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need us to cut the cake, do you?โ€ she joked, grinning mischievously.

Edison tapped her lightly on the forehead. โ€œYou little rascal! I can handle a knife just fine. I want your advice.โ€

โ€œAdvice on what? Rekindling things with an old flame?โ€ Lena quipped effortlessly. She didnโ€™t even flinch at the thought of her grandma overhearing and smacking her.

โ€œYouโ€™re getting bolder by the minute,โ€ Edison said, wagging a finger at her, though he looked more amused than annoyed. โ€œNo, I want your help finding a wife for Aaron.โ€

Lena and I exchanged wide-eyed looks, caught totally off guard.

Edison sighed dramatically. โ€œHeโ€™s in his thirties and still hasnโ€™t had a girlfriend. Do you know what people are saying? They think heโ€™s unnatural. Some even speculate he might be into men.โ€

I had to bite back laughter, but Lena didnโ€™t bother trying: She burst out laughing.

โ€œGrandpa, maybe theyโ€™re right!โ€

โ€œWatch it!โ€ Edison warned, though his chuckle betrayed him. He nodded toward a group of well-dressed women mingling nearby. โ€œYou two, go check them out for me.โ€

โ€œBetter hurry, Lena, or youโ€™ll lose your chance,โ€ I teased, nudging her.

โ€œNot again!โ€ Lena groaned, raising her hand like she was about to smack me.

โ€œAlright, alright, Iโ€™ll stop!โ€ I said, laughing. Then I got curious. โ€œBut really, why hasnโ€™t your uncle found anyone yet?โ€

Lena let out a soft humph. โ€œHow would I know? I donโ€™t talk to him much these days.โ€

โ€œEver since the, uhโ€ฆ bathroom incident?โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Lena sighed. โ€œAfter that, it was like we justโ€ฆ stopped talking. If only I could erase that moment from my memory.โ€

โ€œYou stopped talking because it did leave a mark,โ€ I said, nudging her. โ€œPeople donโ€™t hang onto stuff like that unless it means something.โ€

โ€œOkay, Freud,โ€ Lena snapped. โ€œNo oneโ€™s hanging onto anything. If he hadnโ€™t come back, I wouldnโ€™t even remember it.โ€

Sure, because things you really forget donโ€™t pop up so easily. The way she said it? Definitely carved into her memory.

Lena and I wandered the room, scanning the crowd of elegant young ladies. None of them seemed like a match for Aaron to me.

โ€œWhat about you? Spot anyone promising?โ€ I asked Lena.

She shook her head firmly. โ€œNot a single one. Iโ€™m confident Uncle Aaron wouldnโ€™t be into any of them.โ€

I held up my hand for a high five. โ€œGlad we agree.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s go report back to Grandpa,โ€ Lena said, leading the way.

But as we reached the entrance to the hall, we caught Edison and Aaronโ€™s voices drifting from inside.
