Chapter 791
I couldnโt believe Iโd gone so far as to quote the law to defend Aaronโs single status.
โI donโt care about your laws or whatever,โ Edison retorted, waving me off. โWhat I do care about is how unnatural it is for a man to be over thirty and still not marriedโor even dating! Mark my words, if he shows up one day with a husband instead of a wife, I wonโt know where to hide my face.โ
Aaron, as unflappable as ever, smirked. โDonโt worry, Dad, I promise I wonโt bring home a husband.โ
Edisonโs face turned crimson, and Lena jumped in, trying to calm him down. โGrandpa, please stop pressuring Uncle Aaron. If he doesnโt like someone, forcing him wonโt make him happy.โ
โAnd now youโre taking his side?โ Edison snapped, glaring at Lena.
I decided to jump in before things escalated. โBecause Lena and I scoped out all the ladies here, and honestly, none of them are good enough for Uncle Aaron.โ
I didnโt even realize Iโd started calling him โUncle Aaronโ until the words were out of my mouth.
โI donโt buy that for a second,โ Edison grumbled.
Lena nodded quickly. โItโs true, Grandpa. Those women? Total drama queens. Just now, they were trash-talking Uncle Aaron behind his back.โ
Aaronโs sharp eyes flicked toward her, while Edisonโs curiosity visibly piqued. โOh? What were they saying? Complaining about him being single in his thirties?โ
โNo,โ Lena said, feigning exasperation. โThey were plotting how to snag him and become the future Mrs. Ace. Their intentions were far from pure.โ
Not even an exaggeration, though those words were clearly just there for Aaronโs benefit.
Edison looked oddly pleased. โAnd whatโs so bad about that?โ
โGrandpa, are you saying you like women who use sneaky tactics?โ Lena shot back, hitting his weak spot dead-on.
Edison went quiet, clearly remembering a past experience heโd rather forget.
Lena threw me a look, and I stepped in with the assist. โGrandpa Edison, why not let Lena and me handle finding a girlfriend for Uncle Aaron? Weโve got this.โ
Lenaโs glare practically screamed โtraitor,โ but before Edison could agree, Aaron cut in smoothly. โNo need. Iโll take care of it myself.โ
With that, he stood and walked out.
โWell, youโd better hurry,โ Edison called after him. โI want to hold a great-grandchild before I kick the bucket!โ
When Aaron was gone, Edison let out a long sigh. โIโm only doing this for his own good. When your grandma and I are gone, whoโs going to look after him?โ
โThat wonโt happen, Grandpa,โ Lena said softly. โHe has Mom, and he has me. Besides, you and Grandma will live to be a hundred, so donโt stress about it.โ
Edison shook his head. โA hundred? Thatโs wishful thinkingโฆ Ah, Iโm just old. None of you listen to me anymore.โ
For a moment, his usual commanding aura cracked, and all I saw was a tired, vulnerable man. It hit me harder than I expected.
โGrandpa Edison, everyoneโs got their own path,โ I said gently. โYou canโt force these things.โ
โSheโs right,โ Lena added. โYouโve done enough. Itโs time to let it go.โ
Edison waved us off with a sigh. โFine, fine, go. Iโm tired.โ
As Lena and I left, we saw Aaron standing just outside. His normally calm expression carried a faint shadow of sadness, like heโd overheard everything Edison had said.
Maybe that wasnโt such a bad thing. At least now heโd understand the concern behind all the nagging.
Lena and I gave him a quick nod and walked away in silence.
The next morning, I wasnโt expecting to wake up to Aaron trending.
[Aaron Ace Spotted with Mystery Woman at Private Residence โ Romance Rumors Spark!]
The headline practically screamed at me from my phone screen.
Last night, Edison was grilling him over not having a girlfriend. Now there was a rumor? No way this wasnโt intentional.
Before I could process it, another alert flashed on my screen.
[Historic Monastery Engulfed in Flames โ Two Dead, Six Injured.]
The image accompanying the story was unmistakable.
Cloudscape Monastery.
