Chapter 798

โ€œThreatened miscarriage,โ€ the doctor said.

Wait, what? Did I hear that right? Miscarriage?!

โ€œDoctor, Iโ€™m pregnant?โ€ I blurted, grabbing her coat like it was my last lifeline. My voice was a weird mix of shock, panic, andโ€”okay, a tiny spark of joy.

The doctor blinked at me. โ€œYou didnโ€™t know?โ€ Then she gave me the most judgmental mom glare ever. โ€œYoung people these daysโ€”so reckless, no sense of responsibility.โ€

She glanced between Jace and me like sheโ€™d already decided we were just another careless couple. I didnโ€™t even bother correcting her. My brain was too busy short-circuiting.

โ€œDoctor, am I really pregnant?โ€ I asked again, desperate for confirmation.

โ€œYes,โ€ she said. โ€œBut itโ€™s not good news yet. The pregnancyโ€™s at risk. Whether the baby makes itโ€ฆ itโ€™s uncertain.โ€

Her bluntness hit like a slap. โ€œPlease, doctor,โ€ I begged, my voice wavering. โ€œHelp me save the baby.โ€

Iโ€™d been secretly hoping for thisโ€”like, without even realizing it. And now? My baby was here, and Iโ€™d been too clueless to notice. The guilt hit like a truck.

โ€˜Baby, please hang in there. I promise, Iโ€™ll do better. Just be okay, please.โ€™

โ€œFor now, strict bed rest,โ€ the doctor said, typing away on her computer like this was no big deal. โ€œOnly get up for the bathroom or food. Weโ€™ll monitor for a week. If the bleeding doesnโ€™t stop, we wonโ€™t be able to save the baby.โ€

โ€œCan I stay here at the hospital?โ€ I asked. I was too freaked out to even think about moving. Plus, Lena worked here as the head of OB-GYN, so it felt safer to stay close.

But Lena was stuck in surgery, so I was stuck with this doctor, who wasnโ€™t exactly giving off warm and fuzzy vibes. Otherwise, I knew sheโ€™d be by my side, personally handling my care.

โ€œThis hospitalโ€™s OB-GYN is full. Youโ€™ll have to rest at home,โ€ she said, her tone icier than a popsicle in January.

Seriously? I was practically a regular at this hospitalโ€™s OB-GYN department. The nurses even joked I should get an honorary badge. But this doctor? Total stranger.

โ€œWeโ€™ll take a VIP suite,โ€ Jace cut in, dropping his usual โ€œmoney solves everythingโ€ energy.

The doctor didnโ€™t even blink. โ€œVIP is full, too.โ€

โ€œThen add a bed. If she leaves and something happens, whoโ€™s taking responsibility?โ€ His voice had that commanding edge I hadnโ€™t heard in forever.

But this doctor wasnโ€™t fazed. โ€œWe donโ€™t make exceptions. If we did, this hospital would turn into a circus.โ€

Jace glanced at me, his expression darkening when he noticed how pale I was. โ€œDo I need to call the hospital director?โ€ he asked, low and dangerous.

Her glare couldโ€™ve melted steel. Before the situation exploded, a familiar voice cut in.

โ€œThereโ€™s no need for that. If thereโ€™s no room, she can stay in my office,โ€ Lena said, walking in.

Relief hit me like a wave, and the tears Iโ€™d been holding back finally spilled over. โ€œLenaโ€ฆโ€

She gave me a soft smile, patting my head before turning to the doctor. โ€œDr. Cahn, sheโ€™s my best friend.โ€

Dr. Cahn stiffened, her fingers pausing over the keyboard. After a second, she stood. โ€œSheโ€™s your responsibility, then.โ€ Hands shoved into her pockets, she stormed off, her steps sharp and jerky.

โ€œWhatโ€™s her name?โ€ Jace asked, his voice icy as he tracked the doctorโ€™s retreat.

โ€œShe got the job through connections,โ€ Lena replied, already guessing what he was planning.

But I didnโ€™t care about the drama. I grabbed Lenaโ€™s hand, holding on like my life depended on it. โ€œLena, can the baby be saved?โ€
