Chapter 801

Lindey froze, her eyes filling with tears before she nodded. โ€œOkayโ€ฆ fine. Deal.โ€

The first I heard of it was onlineโ€”pics and videos everywhere. Cole had gotten his butt handed to him, and the comments? Straight-up applause. Rumors were flying that he was tied to organized crime. But I knew better. Jace sent those guys after him. And honestly, anyone paying attention could connect the dots. Thatโ€™s why Wayne wasnโ€™t about to let it slide.

โ€œYou went after Cole? Whatโ€™s your problem?โ€ Wayneโ€™s voice was razor-sharp. โ€œYou think youโ€™re invincible or just bored with life?โ€

Jace just smirked. โ€œMaybe. I mean, that fire didnโ€™t kill me.โ€

Wayne stiffened at that but didnโ€™t bite. โ€œIโ€™ve got a place for you to lay low. Thorstenโ€™s not going to let this go.โ€

Jace stretched out lazily on the couch, shirt half-unbuttoned, legs up on the coffee table like he owned the world. โ€œLet him come.โ€

Wayne snorted. โ€œYouโ€™re delusional if you think Dad can protect you like before. Thorstenโ€™s done giving him any respect.โ€

Jace shrugged, not even flinching. โ€œDonโ€™t need Dadโ€™s name to back me up.โ€

He tilted his chin, nodding toward Wayne. โ€œYouโ€™ve always thought Mom and Dad gave me everything, right? But when they handed me Riverwave Corp, it was a dumpster fire, thanks to the Drago family. I built it back up. I made them kneel. Me.โ€

Wayneโ€™s sharp, narrow eyes glinted with mockery from behind his glasses. โ€œWhat, you want a medal? Thatโ€™s why they chose you, huh? Because youโ€™re so much better than me?โ€

Jace didnโ€™t back down. โ€œThatโ€™s the truth, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Wayne let out another dismissive laugh. โ€œTruth? Donโ€™t even start.โ€

Jace had had enough of the pretense, so he tore the mask off entirely. โ€œYouโ€™ve been so obsessed with beating me, proving youโ€™re better, you made deals with dangerous people overseas. Donโ€™t think I donโ€™t know. All for what? To get Keira? To eliminate anyone in your way? Dragging Steve into your mess? Whereโ€™s your humanity, Wayne? You think shortcuts will get you everything you want forever?โ€

His words cut deep, his anger radiating like heat. Jace rubbed the bridge of his nose, trying to stay calm. At least he wasnโ€™t bleeding this time.

โ€œYou done?โ€ Wayne asked, ice in his tone.

His glare was sharp, unapologetic, ready to cut down anyone in his way. โ€œYouโ€™re lecturing me? Thatโ€™s hilarious. Youโ€™ve never known what itโ€™s like to love someone you can never haveโ€”to keep reaching, trying, and still come up empty. Donโ€™t act like youโ€™ve never played dirty, Jace. Like youโ€™re some saint in business or love.โ€

โ€œYou think I got mixed up with them just to prove something to you? Is that what you tell yourself?โ€ Wayne asked, his voice breaking just enough to expose a flicker of pain in his eyes.

Wayne shook his head and gave a bitter smile. โ€œYou all blame me, like Iโ€™m the family villain. But if I really screwed up, it was by being born a Johnston.โ€

Something in his words hit Jace wrong. โ€œWhat are you trying to say? Youโ€”โ€

The sharp buzz of a ringtone cut him off. The phone lit up on the table, the caller ID flashing a name that made Jaceโ€™s chest tightenโ€”their house phone.

Jaceโ€™s breath caught. He grabbed the phone, barely registering Wayne heading for the door. โ€œMom?!โ€ His voice shook, full of panic. โ€œWhat?!โ€

Wayne froze mid-step, turning back at the sound of Jaceโ€™s fear.
