Chapter 811
Aaron must have felt her staring because he turned, locking eyes with Lena. She immediately dropped her gaze. โUncle Aaron.โ
โWhat are you doing hovering in the doorway?โ he asked, and she shuffled inside without protest. โThanks,โ she mumbled. If he hadnโt shown up, who knows how long Wayne wouldโve kept her tied up.
This whole mess started with her stalling Wayne, pretending she was helping as a doctor to buy Keira time to save Jace. But Wayne caught on and didnโt hesitate to have her restrained.
โLet me see your hand,โ Aaron said, holding out his own.
โIโm fine. No injuries,โ she insisted. โIโm a doctor, remember?โ
He wasnโt buying it. โIf youโre fine, then whatโs the harm in letting me check?โ
Under his intense stare, Lena caved, holding out her hand. His fingers brushed over her wrist, and he immediately noticed the damageโred marks, swelling, raw scrapes where the ropes had bitten into her skin.
โThis is fine?โ he asked, raising an eyebrow.
โNot like Iโll die,โ she muttered, but her voice lacked conviction. Aaronโs eyes stayed on her, but Lena kept her gaze fixed anywhere else.
โIt might not kill you,โ he said, his voice carrying a light reprimand, โbut it could cost someone else their life.โ
Lenaโs throat tightened. She wanted to ask who he meant, but the words stayed stuck. Aaron motioned for her to sit on the couch, grabbing a medical kit nearby. As soon as he opened it, Lena recognized the contentsโspecialized supplies. Clearly, heโd planned ahead, expecting sheโd be hurt.
He squeezed ointment onto her wrist; the coolness quickly replaced by a sharp sting that made her flinch.
โIt hurts? Sorry. Iโll be gentler,โ Aaron said softly, even blowing on her wrist like itโd help.
โUncle Aaron, Wayneโs definitely going to cause trouble tomorrow. Can you stop him?โ Lenaโs voice cracked with worry.
Aaron kept calm. โNo guarantees.โ
Chapter 11
Thinking about how Wayne had twisted his own fatherโs funeral into a spectacle, Lena couldnโt hold back. โHeโs definitely planning something big for tomorrow. You need to be careful.โ
Aaron let out a thoughtful hum. โWhatโs Keiraโs plan?โ
โWhatever it takes to stop him,โ Lena said quickly, then added, โBut donโt think Iโm hiding anything; I donโt know eitherโshe hasnโt told me.โ
โYou donโt need to worry about that,โ Aaron cut in, his tone firm. โJust focus on staying safe tomorrow.โ
โMaybe you can handle Wayne today, but tomorrowโs a different story,โ Lena said, still worried.
โHow will we know unless we try?โ Aaron shrugged, then added, his voice softening, โBesides, you stopped coming to me for help.โ
Lena felt a pang of guilt. Was he calling her out? She tried to smooth things over. โI get it. Next time Iโm in trouble, Iโll come to you first.โ
Aaronโs gaze lingered on her smile, a warmth flickering in his chest. โGo tell Keira Hayden will be back tomorrow.โ
โHow do you know that?โ Lena asked, her surprise obvious.
Aaron didnโt answer, but the look on his face said everything.
โYouโve teamed up with Hayden?โ Lena asked, her mind reeling.
