Chapter 813

It had been years since sheโ€™d been this close to himโ€”close enough for him to ruffle her hair, like when she was a kid. Lena and I barely slept that night. The tension was unbearable. We werenโ€™t the only ones. Lindey stayed in the mourning hall all night, ignoring Jaceโ€™s repeated attempts to get her to rest. Wayne? Completely MIA. At one point, Lena even joked he mightโ€™ve bailed for good.

But I knew better. Wayne had burned every bridge; running wasnโ€™t his style. Another shady move? Totally possible. We needed proofโ€”something solid to bring him down.

โ€œRea, you up?โ€ Lindeyโ€™s voice came from behind my door.

I got up to open it. โ€œYeah?โ€

She smiled faintly. โ€œCome eat. Youโ€™ll need energy for today.โ€

She was wearing an apron. Cooking? Now?

Lena raised a brow. โ€œWhat if she poisoned the pancakes for Wayneโ€™s sake?โ€

I smirked. โ€œYouโ€™re a doctor. Youโ€™ll survive.โ€

Still confused, we went to the table. Wayneโ€™s spot was set, like heโ€™d pop in any second.

โ€œWait for him?โ€ I asked.

Lindey shook her head. โ€œNo. Letโ€™s eat without him.โ€

She served us herself, overly cheerful. โ€œRea, pumpkin custardโ€”your favorite! Lena, try it. Jace, waffles with extra syrup.โ€

I half-expected Lindey to drop some cryptic warning, but nope. She just kept pushing food at us.

โ€œLindey, you should eat too,โ€ I said, noticing her untouched plate. I peeled an orange and slid it in front of her.

The spread was huge, but none of us ate much. Too much on our minds to care about breakfast.

By 9 a.m., the funeral was supposed to start, but Wayne was still missing. Jace frowned and went to Lindey. โ€œMom, I canโ€™t reach Wayne. Should we wait?โ€

Chapter 813

Wayne mightโ€™ve been a walking insult in every way possible, but as the eldest son, he shouldโ€™ve been here. Lindey glanced at the clock. โ€œGive it another half hour.โ€

Jace pushed things back, and at 9:20, Wayne finally strolled inโ€”except he wasnโ€™t alone.

โ€œItโ€™s Hayden!โ€ Lena hissed, elbowing me hard.

I froze. Hayden.

He looked differentโ€”leaner, darker, like heโ€™d been through hell and back. But he carried himself the same, unshakable and strong, like nothing could break him.

โ€œDid Wayne bring him here as a hostage?โ€ Lena whispered, leaning in.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ I muttered, my heart pounding, my unease growing.
