Chapter 824

Heโ€™d do it. But what could I possibly give him when I had nothing?

โ€œWell, stop wasting time and bury me already,โ€ I said, sounding almost bored. Fear wasnโ€™t something I felt anymoreโ€”not after everything Iโ€™d been through.

โ€œCole, youโ€™ve seen it yourselfโ€”thereโ€™s nothing here,โ€ I added, my voice steady. โ€œHayden told me he left something in this spot, and thatโ€™s why I kept quiet. But guess what? He fooled me too.โ€ I let out a bitter laugh, hoping it sounded convincing.

This was my only shotโ€”to make Cole believe Hayden had played me, just like everyone else. If he bought it, maybe heโ€™d stop digging and forget about Yara entirely.

โ€œDonโ€™t try that crap on me,โ€ Cole snapped, narrowing his eyes. โ€œYou two are cunning. I know youโ€™re hiding something.โ€

One of his goons cut in hesitantly. โ€œUh, sir? Maybe we should keep digging? Could be deeper.โ€

I rolled my eyes. Genius idea.

โ€œThen get moving!โ€ Cole barked, yanking me closer to the grave as his men started digging again.

They kept at it, going deeper until the pit was practically a crater. But eventually, even they had to admit defeat.

โ€œThereโ€™sโ€ฆ really nothing here,โ€ one guy mumbled hesitantly.

Without hesitation, Cole raised his leg and kicked him square in the chest, sending him sprawling into the pit.

โ€œNothing? Then rot down there!โ€ Cole roared, his anger boiling over.

As his fury subsided, his eyes found me again. I stood my ground, meeting his glare head-on.

Cole gave me a slow, deliberate nod, his lips curling into a dark smile. โ€œNot talking, huh? Fine. If I canโ€™t find the device, youโ€™ll do just fine as leverage. If Hayden crosses me, youโ€™re done.โ€

A flash of memory hit meโ€”Hayden once using Lena as a bargaining chip.

โ€œHayden? Cross you?โ€ I said, forcing a calm tone. โ€œHeโ€™s already working with you! He kidnapped my best friend, for crying out loud. And you still donโ€™t trust him?โ€

Cole laughed, loud and sharp, the sound echoing like some kind of villainโ€™s trademark.

โ€œAnd here I thought you two were inseparable. Turns out, you donโ€™t even know your own man,โ€ he sneered.

His words gave me pause. Then it hit me he wasnโ€™t talking about Hayden. He meant Xander.

But hadnโ€™t Hayden told me something happened to Xander? Clearly, another lie.

Still, relief washed over me. If Xander wasnโ€™t Hayden, it meant Hayden wasnโ€™t under Coleโ€™s controlโ€”and, more importantly, he wasnโ€™t the one whoโ€™d taken Lena.

โ€œAnd Hayden? Where is he?โ€ I asked, keeping my voice casual.

Cole leaned in close, his grin sharp as a blade. โ€œWant to find out? Hand over the device, and maybe heโ€™ll show up.โ€

More pressure, more games. I stayed quiet.

When I didnโ€™t respond, Cole straightened and motioned to his men. โ€œWeโ€™re leaving.โ€

He grabbed my arm roughly, yanking me forward so hard I nearly tripped.

โ€œLet go,โ€ I snapped, jerking free. โ€œI can walk.โ€

Cole glared at me but released his grip.

He stomped ahead, pulling out his phone. I couldnโ€™t catch what the person on the other end was saying, but his reply was sharp and bitter: โ€œNothing. Not a damn thing. Just a stupid ring.โ€

Once we were in the car, he grabbed a bottle of liquor and took a couple of long swigs.

I held out my hand.

โ€œWhat?โ€ he said, raising an eyebrow.

โ€œGive it to me.โ€

โ€œGive you what?โ€

I pointed at his hand. โ€œThe ring. Thatโ€™s Haydenโ€™s. It belongs to me.โ€

He smirked. โ€œOh, really? If he wanted you to have it, he wouldnโ€™t have shoved it in an urn. And even if I gave it to you, would you even dare to wear it?โ€

โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t I?โ€ I shot back, unfazed. โ€œIโ€™m not afraid of ghostsโ€”or demons.โ€

Before he could stop me, I reached for the ring myself.
