Chapter 835
Tanya walked right into the trap. Sheโd been so desperate for the spotlight that she didnโt even see it coming.
โDoes this mean the police have everything they need? Will Hayden and the others be back soon?โ I asked, steering the conversation back to what actually mattered.
โYeah, it wonโt be long now. Aaronโs handling the last bit of cleanup,โ Jace replied.
As he spoke, I studied him more closely. He looked thinnerโhis already sharp features now even more defined. I wasnโt surprised. His parents were gone, his brother was on the run, and heโd been helping me juggle crisis after crisis. It was a lot for anyone to bear.
โYouโve been through so much lately,โ I said softly, my gratitude clear.
โThis is my responsibility. Wayne caused this, so itโs on me.โ
The calm, heavy way he said it struck me. Wayne always acted like he was Jaceโs equalโbetter, evenโbut in this moment, Jaceโs integrity made their differences painfully obvious.
โRea,โ Jace said, his voice pulling me from my thoughts. โTodayโs the thirty-fifth day since my parents passed. Will you come with me to visit them?โ
My mom once told me that the Kehlmarkan tradition was to believe that souls linger for a while after death, finally leaving on the thirty-fifth day.
โOf course,โ I said without hesitation.
The cemetery was quiet. Lindey and Matthewโs gravestone had their photo etched on it, their names carved beneath. Their love story hadnโt been epic or fairy-tale perfect, but now they lay side by sideโunited in death.
โLindey, Matthew, if you see my parents down there, let them know Iโm doing okay.โ
As the words left my lips, I realized it was true: I had forgiven them. Completely.
โRea,โ Jace said, his voice full of gratitude. โThank you.โ
It was clear heโd brought me here with a purpose. I turned to him and smiled. โI never really hated them. I justโฆ couldnโt.โ
For ten years, theyโd been my family. Theyโd shared that path with me, giving me warmth and love, even if it hadnโt been perfect.
โThey would be at peace knowing that,โ Jace murmured, his gaze locked on the gravestone.
As we descended the cemetery steps, Jace spoke again, his tone quiet. โRea, will you visit them every year from now on?โ
โOf course. Even if you didnโt ask, I would.โ
โGood,โ he said. โThat way, they wonโt be forgotten.โ
I glanced at him, walking beside me. โJace, youโve changed.โ
โHave I?โ he asked, his tone detached.
โYou have thisโฆ clarity now. Like youโve let go of everything that used to hold you back,โ I said, finally putting my finger on what had felt different about him.
He smiled faintly but didnโt deny it. โMaybe.โ
It was like heโd peeled back the layers of the world, seeing it for what it truly wasโdetached and calm. After everything heโd enduredโour breakup, Wayneโs return, losing his parents, and all the chaos that followedโit wasnโt surprising. They say thereโs no greater sorrow than a heart thatโs gone numb. Maybe this was his way of surviving it all.
After the cemetery, I headed home. As I approached my building, I noticed a pregnant woman holding the hand of a little girl. The girl was adorableโrosy cheeks, fair skin, and two perfect pigtails.
โYouโre so pretty,โ I couldnโt help but say, smiling at her.
Inside the elevator, the little girl turned to me suddenly. โMiss, my mommyโs having a baby brother, and you have a baby girl in your belly.โ
I froze, stunned. My stomach was still flatโhow could she know?
The woman looked flustered, apologizing quickly. โIโm so sorry, sheโs been saying random things like that latelyโฆโ
โNo,โ I interrupted, surprising myself. โSheโs right. I am pregnant.โ
The womanโs eyes widened. โBut you donโt even lookโฆโ
โItโs under three months,โ I explained softly.
I reached out to gently pat the little girlโs pigtails. โThank you for your blessing. Iโd love to have a daughter as sweet and beautiful as you.โ
Her mom smiled. โYou and your husband must be such a good-looking couple. Your babyโs going to be adorable.โ
Her words caught me completely off guard. My hand froze on the elevator button.
