Chapter 835

Tanya walked right into the trap. Sheโ€™d been so desperate for the spotlight that she didnโ€™t even see it coming.

โ€œDoes this mean the police have everything they need? Will Hayden and the others be back soon?โ€ I asked, steering the conversation back to what actually mattered.

โ€œYeah, it wonโ€™t be long now. Aaronโ€™s handling the last bit of cleanup,โ€ Jace replied.

As he spoke, I studied him more closely. He looked thinnerโ€”his already sharp features now even more defined. I wasnโ€™t surprised. His parents were gone, his brother was on the run, and heโ€™d been helping me juggle crisis after crisis. It was a lot for anyone to bear.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been through so much lately,โ€ I said softly, my gratitude clear.

โ€œThis is my responsibility. Wayne caused this, so itโ€™s on me.โ€

The calm, heavy way he said it struck me. Wayne always acted like he was Jaceโ€™s equalโ€”better, evenโ€”but in this moment, Jaceโ€™s integrity made their differences painfully obvious.

โ€œRea,โ€ Jace said, his voice pulling me from my thoughts. โ€œTodayโ€™s the thirty-fifth day since my parents passed. Will you come with me to visit them?โ€

My mom once told me that the Kehlmarkan tradition was to believe that souls linger for a while after death, finally leaving on the thirty-fifth day.

โ€œOf course,โ€ I said without hesitation.

The cemetery was quiet. Lindey and Matthewโ€™s gravestone had their photo etched on it, their names carved beneath. Their love story hadnโ€™t been epic or fairy-tale perfect, but now they lay side by sideโ€”united in death.

โ€œLindey, Matthew, if you see my parents down there, let them know Iโ€™m doing okay.โ€

As the words left my lips, I realized it was true: I had forgiven them. Completely.

โ€œRea,โ€ Jace said, his voice full of gratitude. โ€œThank you.โ€

It was clear heโ€™d brought me here with a purpose. I turned to him and smiled. โ€œI never really hated them. I justโ€ฆ couldnโ€™t.โ€

For ten years, theyโ€™d been my family. Theyโ€™d shared that path with me, giving me warmth and love, even if it hadnโ€™t been perfect.

โ€œThey would be at peace knowing that,โ€ Jace murmured, his gaze locked on the gravestone.

As we descended the cemetery steps, Jace spoke again, his tone quiet. โ€œRea, will you visit them every year from now on?โ€

โ€œOf course. Even if you didnโ€™t ask, I would.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ he said. โ€œThat way, they wonโ€™t be forgotten.โ€

I glanced at him, walking beside me. โ€œJace, youโ€™ve changed.โ€

โ€œHave I?โ€ he asked, his tone detached.

โ€œYou have thisโ€ฆ clarity now. Like youโ€™ve let go of everything that used to hold you back,โ€ I said, finally putting my finger on what had felt different about him.

He smiled faintly but didnโ€™t deny it. โ€œMaybe.โ€

It was like heโ€™d peeled back the layers of the world, seeing it for what it truly wasโ€”detached and calm. After everything heโ€™d enduredโ€”our breakup, Wayneโ€™s return, losing his parents, and all the chaos that followedโ€”it wasnโ€™t surprising. They say thereโ€™s no greater sorrow than a heart thatโ€™s gone numb. Maybe this was his way of surviving it all.

After the cemetery, I headed home. As I approached my building, I noticed a pregnant woman holding the hand of a little girl. The girl was adorableโ€”rosy cheeks, fair skin, and two perfect pigtails.

โ€œYouโ€™re so pretty,โ€ I couldnโ€™t help but say, smiling at her.

Inside the elevator, the little girl turned to me suddenly. โ€œMiss, my mommyโ€™s having a baby brother, and you have a baby girl in your belly.โ€

I froze, stunned. My stomach was still flatโ€”how could she know?

The woman looked flustered, apologizing quickly. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, sheโ€™s been saying random things like that latelyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I interrupted, surprising myself. โ€œSheโ€™s right. I am pregnant.โ€

The womanโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œBut you donโ€™t even lookโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s under three months,โ€ I explained softly.

I reached out to gently pat the little girlโ€™s pigtails. โ€œThank you for your blessing. Iโ€™d love to have a daughter as sweet and beautiful as you.โ€

Her mom smiled. โ€œYou and your husband must be such a good-looking couple. Your babyโ€™s going to be adorable.โ€

Her words caught me completely off guard. My hand froze on the elevator button.
