Chapter 837
The rest of my words caught in my throat as Hayden pulled me into his arms. His cheek brushed mine, his voice low and steady. โLenaโs fine. I didnโt hurt her. Sheโs safe, I swear.โ His scent, his warmth, his wordsโthey worked slowly, easing the panic clawing at my chest.
โYouโre not lying?โ I asked, my voice trembling.
โIโm not lying. Aaronโs with her. Heโll bring her back,โ he murmured, his lips brushing my hair.
โThen why are you here?โ I wasnโt ready to let this go so easily.
His breath tickled against my skin. โBecause I missed you. I missed you too much.โ
Missed me? Really? One minute he was cold and unreadable, and the next, he was this warm, familiar version of himself again. It was whiplash, and it messed with my head.
He mustโve seen the doubt in my eyes because he loosened his hold, his hand grazing my cheek. โHit me, yell at meโdo whatever you need. Justโฆ ask me what you want.โ
โAre you really Hayden?โ I asked quietly, skipping the yelling and hitting.
A faint smile played on his lips. โDonโt believe me? Test me.โ
He grabbed my hand and pressed it against his chest. But I pulled my hand back, needing space. I walked into the apartment and sat on the couch, eyeing the fruit platter on the coffee table and the smell of fresh food in the air.
Looking over at the dining table, I froze. It was set with all my favorite dishes.
Hayden followed and sat beside me, lightly holding my hand. โKiki, I know youโre upset. Iโll explain everything, I promise. Justโฆ give me some time.โ
He still knew me too wellโtoo well for my liking. I pulled my hand back. โThen save the sweet talk until youโve actually explained.โ
It wasnโt about being cold. I caredโGod, I cared too much. But the version of Hayden whoโd taken Lena? He was a stranger. Unfamiliar. Terrifying. Until Lena came back, I couldnโt let my guard down. Not with the memory of what heโd done still fresh in my head.
Hayden studied me, then nodded softly. โLetโs eat first,โ he said.
I glanced at the table again. My appetite was nonexistent, but the baby growing inside me had other plans. I sat down, and Hayden filled my plate, just like he used to.
โItโs been a while since youโve had a proper meal. Taste it and see if itโs still the same,โ Hayden said.
The food tasted exactly how I remembered. His cooking hadnโt changed. But I had.
Still, I ate more than I expected. When I looked up, I realized he hadnโt touched his plate. โWhy arenโt you eating? Did you poison the food?โ I asked, raising an eyebrow.
He laughed. โA little late to worry about that, donโt you think?โ
Fair point. Iโd already cleared my plate.
โIโm not hungry,โ he said. โWatching you eat is enough.โ
Hayden wasnโt just being honestโhe was laying on the rizz.
After dinner, we moved to the couch. The silence between us wasnโt exactly comfortable; it was heavy, awkward, like we were tiptoeing around something neither of us wanted to touch.
โWant some fruit?โ he asked after a while.
โNo, Iโm stuffed.โ
โThen ask me whatever you want to know,โ he said. He could sense the weight of the questions hovering between us.
I stared at him, my mind racing but coming up blank. Where did I even start? He seemed to catch on and gave me a small, knowing smile.
โAlright,โ he said softly. โIโll go first. You can jump in if I miss anything.โ
That worked for me. I pulled my knees up to my chest, curling into the couch, and Hayden began to speak.
