Chapter 839

I glanced over at Hayden. He was already awake, his gaze soft and knowing.

โ€œDr. Lane,โ€ I shot back, โ€œare you slacking off lately? Youโ€™re an OB-GYN, but youโ€™re throwing around lines like that? Whoโ€™s really got the dirty mind here?โ€

Lenaโ€™s laughter exploded through the phone. โ€œMe? All I said was โ€˜love paradiseโ€™! Youโ€™re the one who made it sound X-rated. Donโ€™t blame me for where your mind went!โ€

I was speechless for a moment, then blurted out, โ€œHow are you? Are you hurt?โ€ This was what worried me most. Even though Hayden had promised me Lena was fine, I needed to hear it from her directly.

โ€œDidnโ€™t your Hayden already tell you? Or did you not even let him talk and just went straight for the jugular?โ€ Lena teased, knowing me all too well.

When it came down to Hayden or my best friend, I was always picking her.

โ€œI want to hear it from you,โ€ I said, noticing it wasnโ€™t a video call.

โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll call you on video. I didnโ€™t start with that in case I interrupted somethingโ€ฆ intimate. You know, a live show,โ€ she said, her words dripping with innuendo.

โ€œKnock it off and turn your camera on,โ€ I huffed, ending the call so she could switch to video.

As I waited, Hayden asked, โ€œWant some water?โ€ I nodded, and he got up to grab it just as Lenaโ€™s video call came through.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Hayden?โ€ she asked immediately.

โ€œHeโ€™s getting me water. What, you miss him already? Catch feelings after all that time together?โ€ I teased.

โ€œHonestly? Not gonna lie โ€“ Haydenโ€™s the kind of guy who could make anyoneโ€™s heart skip. If Iโ€™d been around him for a year, I mightโ€™ve been in trouble,โ€ Lena said casually, totally unbothered by how bold she sounded.

I didnโ€™t overthink it. I knew her too well to take her seriously. Besides, Hayden had already explained how heโ€™d taken care of her during those days โ€“ every move calculated to keep her safe and, yeah, probably to make me go easier on him when he came back.

I smirked, flicking my hair with dramatic flair. โ€œObviously. Your bestie only picks the cream of the crop. Have I ever gone for anything less than top-tier?โ€

โ€œGotta admire the confidence!โ€ Lena laughed.

She leaned into her couch, wrapped up in a plush blanket. Her fair skin was rosy, a huge relief. Still, I wasnโ€™t about to stop worrying. โ€œGet up and jump around. Spin for me,โ€ I said, squinting at the screen like I was trying to spot invisible injuries.

Lena laughed harder. โ€œWhatโ€™s next? Want me to strip while Iโ€™m at it?โ€

โ€œSure, gotta make sure youโ€™re not hiding anything,โ€ I joked, playing along.

โ€œDream on! You think you get to see this?โ€ she tugged her blanket tighter, grinning.

Her playful tone and energy eased the last bit of my anxiety. Hayden had told the truth; she was fine, completely unharmed.

I glanced at the background behind her. โ€œWhere are you? That doesnโ€™t look like a hotel.โ€

โ€œUncle Aaron brought me here. No idea where this is,โ€ she said nonchalantly. Hearing she was with Aaron brought a wave of relief. โ€œGood. If heโ€™s with you, I can finally stop worrying. But come back soon, okay? I wonโ€™t feel totally at ease until youโ€™re here.โ€

โ€œIn a couple of days,โ€ Lena promised, but there was a pause before she added, โ€œYou didnโ€™t give Hayden too much grief, did you?โ€

I glanced at the doorway where Hayden was still busy. โ€œNo,โ€ I said.

โ€œSeriously? Not even a little?โ€ she pressed, clearly not buying it. โ€œRea, he had his reasons for taking me that day. Donโ€™t hold it against him.โ€

Her defense of Hayden softened something inside me, breaking through the last bit of tension Iโ€™d been clinging to.

โ€œRea, Hayden really put everything on the line this time,โ€ Lena continued, her tone serious. โ€œHe nearly died taking down a freaking international crime syndicate. Do you know how many people heโ€™s saved?โ€

It was true โ€“ he always carried this larger-than-life sense of purpose.

โ€œAnd youโ€™re amazing too. And Aaron,โ€ I added, hesitating for a moment. โ€œLena, he really cares about you.โ€

โ€œI call him Uncle Aaron. Of course he cares,โ€ she replied quickly, brushing it off.

But I knew she understood what I was really saying.

โ€œHis concern for you isnโ€™t justโ€ฆ uncle-like. Itโ€™s more than thatโ€”โ€ I started, but before I could finish, the call cut off.
