Chapter 839
I glanced over at Hayden. He was already awake, his gaze soft and knowing.
โDr. Lane,โ I shot back, โare you slacking off lately? Youโre an OB-GYN, but youโre throwing around lines like that? Whoโs really got the dirty mind here?โ
Lenaโs laughter exploded through the phone. โMe? All I said was โlove paradiseโ! Youโre the one who made it sound X-rated. Donโt blame me for where your mind went!โ
I was speechless for a moment, then blurted out, โHow are you? Are you hurt?โ This was what worried me most. Even though Hayden had promised me Lena was fine, I needed to hear it from her directly.
โDidnโt your Hayden already tell you? Or did you not even let him talk and just went straight for the jugular?โ Lena teased, knowing me all too well.
When it came down to Hayden or my best friend, I was always picking her.
โI want to hear it from you,โ I said, noticing it wasnโt a video call.
โFine, Iโll call you on video. I didnโt start with that in case I interrupted somethingโฆ intimate. You know, a live show,โ she said, her words dripping with innuendo.
โKnock it off and turn your camera on,โ I huffed, ending the call so she could switch to video.
As I waited, Hayden asked, โWant some water?โ I nodded, and he got up to grab it just as Lenaโs video call came through.
โWhereโs Hayden?โ she asked immediately.
โHeโs getting me water. What, you miss him already? Catch feelings after all that time together?โ I teased.
โHonestly? Not gonna lie โ Haydenโs the kind of guy who could make anyoneโs heart skip. If Iโd been around him for a year, I mightโve been in trouble,โ Lena said casually, totally unbothered by how bold she sounded.
I didnโt overthink it. I knew her too well to take her seriously. Besides, Hayden had already explained how heโd taken care of her during those days โ every move calculated to keep her safe and, yeah, probably to make me go easier on him when he came back.
I smirked, flicking my hair with dramatic flair. โObviously. Your bestie only picks the cream of the crop. Have I ever gone for anything less than top-tier?โ
โGotta admire the confidence!โ Lena laughed.
She leaned into her couch, wrapped up in a plush blanket. Her fair skin was rosy, a huge relief. Still, I wasnโt about to stop worrying. โGet up and jump around. Spin for me,โ I said, squinting at the screen like I was trying to spot invisible injuries.
Lena laughed harder. โWhatโs next? Want me to strip while Iโm at it?โ
โSure, gotta make sure youโre not hiding anything,โ I joked, playing along.
โDream on! You think you get to see this?โ she tugged her blanket tighter, grinning.
Her playful tone and energy eased the last bit of my anxiety. Hayden had told the truth; she was fine, completely unharmed.
I glanced at the background behind her. โWhere are you? That doesnโt look like a hotel.โ
โUncle Aaron brought me here. No idea where this is,โ she said nonchalantly. Hearing she was with Aaron brought a wave of relief. โGood. If heโs with you, I can finally stop worrying. But come back soon, okay? I wonโt feel totally at ease until youโre here.โ
โIn a couple of days,โ Lena promised, but there was a pause before she added, โYou didnโt give Hayden too much grief, did you?โ
I glanced at the doorway where Hayden was still busy. โNo,โ I said.
โSeriously? Not even a little?โ she pressed, clearly not buying it. โRea, he had his reasons for taking me that day. Donโt hold it against him.โ
Her defense of Hayden softened something inside me, breaking through the last bit of tension Iโd been clinging to.
โRea, Hayden really put everything on the line this time,โ Lena continued, her tone serious. โHe nearly died taking down a freaking international crime syndicate. Do you know how many people heโs saved?โ
It was true โ he always carried this larger-than-life sense of purpose.
โAnd youโre amazing too. And Aaron,โ I added, hesitating for a moment. โLena, he really cares about you.โ
โI call him Uncle Aaron. Of course he cares,โ she replied quickly, brushing it off.
But I knew she understood what I was really saying.
โHis concern for you isnโt justโฆ uncle-like. Itโs more than thatโโ I started, but before I could finish, the call cut off.
