Chapter 855
There had been a time when Lena had unconsciously pushed Aaron to the back of her mind. As she unpacked in her room, the evidence of his meticulous care was everywhere. From the bathroom to the closet, every detail was already handled. Her personal essentials? Perfectly stocked. When she was younger, being with Aaron meant she never had to think or planโhe always had it covered. Apparently, nothing had changed.
When Lena stepped out, the dining table was set with a spread that looked straight out of a food magazine. โUncle Aaron, donโt tell me these are pre-made meals,โ she said, narrowing her eyes in disbelief. It had only been a short while since theyโd arrived, yet he somehow managed to have everything ready.
โFor your first meal here? No chance. Come try it,โ Aaron replied, already sitting down. What Lena didnโt know was that heโd started prepping before picking her upโsoup simmering, ingredients chopped, everything ready to finish when they got back.
The table held honey-glazed pork ribs, sautรฉed red eggplant with herbs, and a crisp green salad. Every dish was something Lena loved. โYour mom mentioned you havenโt eaten at home in a while,โ Aaron said casually. โSee if this tastes like hers.โ
Lena froze, eyeing him suspiciously. โWait, my mom made this?โ Aaron frowned like sheโd just insulted him. โReally, Lena?โ He thought, โThis girl was seriously testing his patience.โ
After dinner, Lena got up to help clear the table, but Aaron stopped her. โNo need. Just write down anything youโre missing, and weโll grab it later.โ โYouโve already thought of everything,โ she said softly. Then, after a pause, โThank you.โ As she retreated to her room, Aaron stood there wondering if he should dock his assistantโs bonus for being too thorough in prepping everything.

When I video-called Lena, she answered with a face mask on. Naturally, I couldnโt resist. โWow, Dr. Lane, feeling fancy today?โ โWhy not?โ she said, gesturing to the skincare Aaron had stocked for her: luxury sets, fancy beauty toolsโthe works. Not using them would feel like a crime.
โFair enough. Maybe we should start calling you Dr. Beauty instead,โ I teased, then frowned. โWait a secondโฆthatโs not your place. Where are you?โ โAt Uncle Aaronโs,โ she said, explaining the situation quickly. โAnd donโt get the wrong idea. If Hayden hadnโt come back, I wouldโve crashed at your place.โ
โEven if Iโm back, youโre still welcome,โ Hayden cut in, smirking from beside me. โSure,โ Lena shot back. โBut if I come, Iโm sharing a bed with your wife. Donโt throw a fit about it.โ Hayden grinned. โIf Aaron lets you leave, I wonโt mind.โ
I chuckled. It had been too long since we all laughed like this. Eventually, Lena and I shifted to a more serious topic. โSo, when can I be discharged?โ I asked. โWhy? Isnโt staying in the hospital good for you?โ she replied, her tone sharp but playful. โHomeโs better,โ I said, glancing at Hayden. Truthfully, his constant hovering was wearing him out more than me.
โIs Hayden stressing you out?โ Lena teased. โRemind him youโre recovering, and heโll have to hold off on any ideas he has for now.โ I glanced at Hayden, catching the way his Adamโs apple bobbed as he swallowed. โOh, so he has been thinking about it.โ Suppressing a laugh, I said, โItโs not that. I need to visit someone in prison.โ
