Chapter 923

โ€œBecause this love didnโ€™t give me the happiness I imagined,โ€ Lena explained with a faint smile. โ€œItโ€™s like going to the supermarket, picking out a snack youโ€™re excited about, and then finding out it doesnโ€™t suit your taste. After that, you just donโ€™t like it anymore and wonโ€™t bother with it again.โ€

Her metaphor was strikingly apt.

โ€œAnd what does the happiness you imagine look like?โ€ Aaron asked, as though playing the role of a persistent interviewer.

Lena, softened by the alcohol, answered obediently, โ€œI donโ€™t know. But whatever it is, Nate didnโ€™t give it to me.โ€

Aaron observed the peaceful resignation in her expression and pressed further. โ€œDo you still believe in love? Do you still want to start a new relationship?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Lena said, finally lifting her gaze to meet his. Her eyebrows arched into a cheerful expression. โ€œIโ€™m not the kind of person who gets scared off by a bad experience. If I meet someone who makes my heart race again, Iโ€™ll love them boldly and passionately.โ€

As she spoke, she raised her hand from the shoe cabinet, intending to make a welcoming gesture toward her imagined happiness. But the alcohol muddled her balance, and she stumbled forward.

Aaron instinctively reached out to steady her. His injured arm limited his movement, so he could only brace her gently. She ended up collapsing against his chest.

โ€œUncle, I feel so dizzy,โ€ she murmured, her breath brushing against his chest through the thin fabric of his loungewear, seeping into his very core.

Aaron froze, his entire body going stiff. Fighting to maintain control, he said softly, โ€œYouโ€™re drunk. Let me take you to your room to sleep.โ€

โ€œUncle,โ€ she said suddenly, tilting her head to look up at him. Her voice was soft, but her question was clear. โ€œEarlier, you said you had someone you liked. Who is she? Do I know her?โ€

He didnโ€™t answer.

Lena stopped walking, turning her full attention to him. โ€œTell me. Who is she?โ€

She clung to his waist, her petite figure leaning against him, soft and pliant. His Adamโ€™s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. โ€œSheโ€™s a fool.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Lena blinked, her eyes wide with surprise.

Aaron gazed at her, her delicate features filled with curiosity. โ€œSheโ€™s silly. Sheโ€™s obviously smart, but when it comes to love, sheโ€™s completely clueless.โ€

Lena frowned. โ€œThat sounds awful. Why do you like her, then? She doesnโ€™t deserve you.โ€

โ€œBut I like her,โ€ Aaron said quietly. โ€œWhat should I do about that?โ€

Lena sighed. โ€œThen you should just tell her how you feel and be with her. Maybe after spending some time together, youโ€™ll realize youโ€™re not compatible and stop liking her. Just like me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid to tell her,โ€ Aaron admitted, his gaze softening as he looked at her. โ€œIโ€™m scared Iโ€™ll frighten her.โ€

โ€œUncle, how could confessing scare her? Stop being so dramatic!โ€ Lena exclaimed, tapping his chest lightly with her hand. โ€œIf youโ€™re too shy to say it yourself, write her a love letter, and Iโ€™ll deliver it for youโ€”just like when girls used to ask me to give you their love letters in school.โ€

Aaron chuckled lightly. โ€œYou have the nerve to bring that up? How many of those letters did you actually deliver? Didnโ€™t you intercept them all?โ€

Lena laughed along. โ€œSo you knew all along, Uncle?โ€

Of course, he had known. And he had allowed it because even if she had delivered them, he wouldnโ€™t have read them.

โ€œLilโ€™ Lena,โ€ he asked softly, โ€œcan you tell me why you intercepted those letters?โ€

Lena blinked and thought for a moment. โ€œBecause I didnโ€™t want them to like you, and I definitely didnโ€™t want you dating them.โ€

Aaronโ€™s breath hitched. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you want me dating them?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆโ€ Lena hesitated, searching for the words. โ€œBecause I was afraid if you started dating, you wouldnโ€™t care about me anymore.โ€

Aaronโ€™s heart trembled. โ€œYou were afraid I wouldnโ€™t care about you?โ€

She nodded, then reached up and gently touched his face, her fingers tracing his nose and lips. โ€œUncle, youโ€™re mine. I donโ€™t want any other girl taking you away from me.โ€

Aaronโ€™s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard again. โ€œThenโ€ฆ then would youโ€ฆ would you stay with me? Forever?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ she said without hesitation.

โ€œI mean for a lifetime, always togetherโ€ฆโ€

Her hand paused mid-movement, then slid down as she mumbled, โ€œA lifetime? Always?โ€ Thatโ€™s just a fairy tale.โ€

โ€œLilโ€™ Lena,โ€ Aaron called her name gently. โ€œIโ€™m not lying to you. Iโ€”โ€

โ€œUncle, Iโ€™m so sleepy,โ€ she interrupted, leaning fully into his chest and closing her eyes.

Aaron looked at her, helplessly shaking his head. Still, he let the words he had held back escape his lips.

โ€œLilโ€™ Lena, I want to be with you for a lifetime. But first, I need to pave the way for us.โ€
