Chapter 93
It felt like ages since I last rode a bike. โBike,โ I mumbled, pointing at one nearby. Now, we could rent them with a phone scan, so Wayne pulled out his and scanned one. I reached for my phone, but he stopped me. โYouโve been drinkingโyou shouldnโt be riding.โ
โThey seriously check for drunk biking now?โ I asked, tilting my head.
โYeah, and besidesโฆโ Wayne gently grabbed my armโa touch so different from Jaceโs harsh grip. โItโs dangerous.โ
Gentle and kindโwords made for Wayne. I smiled. โIsnโt that why youโre here?โ
โIf you want to ride, we can another time. But not tonight. Iโll take you,โ he said, guiding me to his rented bike.
He got on and pulled me onto the back. โHold on tight, okay?โ
I clutched his shirt. โGot it.โ
The night breeze was refreshing. Thisโa bike ride with Wayneโwas something Jace, who preferred motorcycles, never gave me. They were brothers, yet so different: Wayne, the gentleman; Jace, wild and reckless.
โRough day?โ Wayne asked, breaking the silence.
โNo, itโs been fine,โ I replied, trying to sound casual.
โStill not over Jace?โ he pressed gently.
I playfully punched his shoulder. โWho says I havenโt moved on? Iโm so over him. After tonight, weโre done. Heโs him, and Iโm me.โ
Wayne didnโt push it, simply pedaling forward. After a while, I said, โTake me to the Holiday Inn. I work tomorrow.โ
โRea,โ Wayne said. Before I could respond, he asked, โWhy is it that in your eyes, thereโs only Jace? Why, between him and me, is it always him?โ
My grip tightened, my heart skipped a beat. Iโd noticed his feelings long ago, but hadnโt wanted to admit it. So it wasnโt just a brotherly affection.
โBecause heโs my fiancรฉ. Everyone always said he was the one,โ I replied.

โBut now that youโre no longer with himโฆ what about me?โ Wayne hesitated. โDo I have a chance?โ
My heart raced. It took a moment to respond. โIโve always seen you as a brother.โ
Wayne said nothing, silently biking to the hotel. When I got off, the alcohol hit me harder, and I almost stumbled. Wayne caught me instantly, smoothly parking the bike.
โIโll walk you up,โ he offered.
โNo, itโs fine,โ I tried to pull away.
But Wayne held on, his grip firm. โRea, I donโt want to just be your brother. I want to take care of you, for the rest of my life.โ
A lump formed in my throat.
โIf you were still with Jace, I never wouldโve said this. But now that youโre not, I want to take my shot.โ His voice was deep, thick with emotion.
It was so heavy, I felt breathless. I dug my nails into my palm, forcing myself to speak. โIโve only ever seen you as a brother, from the beginning to the end.โ
Wayneโs eyes dimmed, his voice cracking. โBut could you try, just once, to not see me as your brother?โ
โMs. Kay, burning the midnight oil again? Donโt you have work tomorrow?โ Haydenโs voice suddenly cut through the tension.
He approached, looking casual in gray loungewear and slippers, but his steps were assured. As I stood frozen, I felt a sharp tug on my wrist. Hayden had grabbed me, and Wayneโs grip on my other hand tightened.
