Chapter 90

Lindey was taken aback, but then softened into a warm, knowing smile. โ€œWhat are you saying? You canโ€™t just swear off men because of Jace. Yes, there are some duds out there, but trust me, thereโ€™s plenty of good fish in the sea,โ€ she said with her usual humor, cracking jokes like she was half her age. Even in her fifties, she remained trendy and upbeat.

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œThere are good men, but Iโ€™m just not in the right mindset for that right now. I need some time.โ€ I said this to gently steer her away from further suggestions. Some things were better left unsaid; crossing that line could quickly make things awkward.

โ€œFair enough,โ€ she replied, easing my mind. But then, she surprised me. โ€œJust donโ€™t wait too long. Finding a good boyfriend is like anything elseโ€”the best ones get snapped up fast.โ€

We both laughed.

โ€œYouโ€™re so beautiful, seriously. Anyone who ends up with you is insanely luckyโ€”like they mustโ€™ve earned major karma in a past life,โ€ she said, making my heart race with anxiety.

But I wouldnโ€™t let her get to me. โ€œYou said itโ€”Iโ€™m too good to settle. Only the best guy deserves me, and until he shows up, Iโ€™m perfectly fine waiting.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Lindey nodded. โ€œNever settle. And definitely donโ€™t let a little heartbreak push you into just picking someone to fill the void.โ€ Her words subtly referenced Hayden.

I responded directly, โ€œI donโ€™t do things on a whim. If I choose someone, itโ€™s because heโ€™s the best in my eyes.โ€ I needed Lindey to understand my choices were always well-considered, even leaving Jace.

Lindey studied my face, remaining quiet. Sheโ€™d known me for a decade; sheโ€™d practically watched me grow up. She understood me.

โ€œThatโ€™s good,โ€ she finally said, ending the conversation.

I ate in silence. Just as I was about to finish, Lindey asked, โ€œDid you visit your parentsโ€™ hometown a few days ago?โ€

I looked up.

โ€œJace told me,โ€ Lindey explained. โ€œHeโ€™s still worried about you.โ€ She smiled softly. โ€œEven if you two arenโ€™t meant to be together, you did grow up together. Weโ€™ve all been family for a long time.โ€

โ€œMm,โ€ I murmured quietly.

โ€œWhat made you decide to go back to your parentsโ€™ hometown? I remember them saying they sold the house when they moved to Seavora, and that there werenโ€™t any relatives left there,โ€ Lindey asked cautiously.

I paused, letting the silence hang in the air before answering, โ€œMy dad always talked about that place when he was alive. He wanted to take me back there someday. I went to fulfill his wish and to see where I was born.โ€ I didnโ€™t hold back from Lindey. It was the truth.

โ€œAnd did you find anything while you were there?โ€ Lindey asked.

Hayden, the courtyard, and Macy flashed through my mind.

โ€œEverythingโ€™s changed,โ€ I said. I didnโ€™t want to share the detailsโ€”they were personal.

โ€œItโ€™s true, twenty-something years is a long time,โ€ Lindey sighed. My parents brought me to Seavora when I was so young that I barely remembered Chiverton. It had been a long time.

โ€œIf you go anywhere in the future, just let us know. We were really worried about you,โ€ Lindey added with concern.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Lindey. That was my fault,โ€ I apologized.

โ€œSilly girl, itโ€™s not your fault. Itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ She trailed off, but I understood.

Lindey stayed until I finished eating. When I said I needed to return to work, she left, but not before reminding me, repeatedly, to come home afterward. She assured me the Johnston residence would always be my home.
