Chapter 173

โ€œNice night,โ€ Wette said, catching Josiahโ€™s stare. This dress looked familiar.

Josiah nodded, still a bit puzzled. It wasnโ€™t just a standardโ€ฆ similarโ€ฆ Verite clan design. With a grin, she declared, โ€œThe exact one you got for Sim!โ€

She proceeded to recount arriving earlier in Sienna. โ€œThe one you picked for Sienna, right?โ€ she asked. โ€œPerpetulant Italianโ€ฆ I loved it, and she just handed it over.โ€

Josiahโ€™s eyes narrowed. Sienna gave up the dress? What was going on? And where was she? He scanned the room.

Yvetteโ€™s smile faltered slightly. โ€œYou looking for Sienna? Havenโ€™t seen her. Maybe sheโ€™s running late.โ€

Josiah checked his watch and frowned. โ€œYeah, maybe. Wait here for her, will you?โ€

Yvette chuckled nervously. โ€œI gotta bounce. Howard gets fussy if Iโ€™m out of sight too long.โ€

โ€œSure thing,โ€ Josiah replied, his mind still on Sienna.

โ€œMr. Flynn! Right then,โ€ Zach jogged over, breathless. Heโ€™d just tried to find Sienna, but she was nowhere to be found.

Josiah glanced at Zach, understanding instantly. โ€œGuess sheโ€™s not coming then,โ€ he said before Zach could speak.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Zach suggested, โ€œitโ€™s the snow. Couldโ€™ve caused a traffic jam. Should we give her a ring and check if sheโ€™s on her way?โ€

Josiah nodded, stepping outside for some peace and quiet. He called Sienna.

Sienna was just mounting a shared bike when her phone buzzed. She answered with a simple โ€œhello.โ€

โ€œSienna,โ€ Josiah said, massaging his temples, โ€œwhere are you? This snowโ€™s coming down hard. Are you stuck in traffic?โ€

โ€œUh-oh,โ€ Sienna replied, a hint of sheepishness in her voice. โ€œMy bad, I totally spaced on telling youโ€ฆ I canโ€™t make it to the party tonight.โ€

Josiahโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œAnd whyโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ Sienna began, โ€œI was trying on my dress for tonight and ran into Yvette. She fell head over heels for it, so I let her have it.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have another dress, and Iโ€™m not showing up in my gym clothes, right? That wouldnโ€™t exactly reflect well on you, would it?โ€

Josiah was thrown. He sensed there was more to the story than just giving away a dress. And now Sienna was bailing on the party.

He followed his intuition and blurted out, โ€œYou donโ€™t want to come, do you? You donโ€™t want to be out with me.โ€

Siennaโ€™s silence spoke volumes, but she wouldnโ€™t admit it. โ€œNo way, man,โ€ she said with a forced laugh. โ€œYouโ€™ve seen Yvette in that dress; you know Iโ€™m telling the truth.โ€

โ€œSienna,โ€ Josiah said, his tone hardening, โ€œyou did this on purpose. You gave Yvette the dress so youโ€™d have an excuse not to be with me tonight.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t,โ€ Sienna insisted, her voice firm.

Josiah let out a humorless chuckle, his eyes turning cold.

But Sienna made the first move. โ€œWhy are you getting so bent out of shape? I was just doing what you wanted.โ€

Josiah was speechless. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œYou told me,โ€ Sienna guided, her voice light, โ€œYvette loved the dress, so whatโ€™s the harm in letting her have it?โ€

Josiah felt the blood drain from him. Heโ€™d dug his own grave.

โ€œDonโ€™t get all worked up,โ€ Sienna said, her lips twitching into a smile. โ€œNext time, Iโ€™ll pick out my own dress. Because you always seem to pick stuff Yvette goes for. If it happens again, Iโ€™ll just have to give it to her again, no!โ€

Josiahโ€™s eyes narrowed in shock. โ€œWhat are you getting at? Whatโ€™s the whole โ€˜give it to herโ€™ thing?โ€

Sienna nearly burst into laughter. โ€œLike that pearl headband, the dress, and that time we had the same outfit, Mr. Flynnโ€ฆโ€ She paused for effect. โ€œYou were picking all that stuff with Yvette in mind, werenโ€™t you?โ€

Sienna was cruising on her bike, heading towards the intersection at Lyceum Street. She was putting away her phone when a car sped past as she rounded a bend. She slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision.

But the snowy roads were slick, and her bike skidded out from under her. She tumbled into the snow with a startled cry.

The car screeched to a halt.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal!โ€ Cedric jolted awake in the back seat, sitting up to see what happened.

โ€œSir, someone fell, but weโ€™re okay. She slipped,โ€ the driver explained.

Cedric immediately recognized Sienna sprawled in the snow. His heart pounded. He flung open the car door and stepped out, moving a bit unsteadily. His leg was still healing from an injury, and he should have been using a cane.

โ€œSir, you left your cane,โ€ the driver said.

โ€œForget it,โ€ Cedric replied, his focus solely on Sienna. Nothing else mattered. He would go through fire for her.

Sienna had hit her head on a streetlight pole. She groaned softly and then passed out.

โ€œSienna!โ€ Cedric dropped to his knees in the snow, scooping her up and gently patting her cheeks. โ€œSienna, come on, wake up. Donโ€™t do this to me. Itโ€™s Cedric. You with me?โ€

But Sienna was unconscious.

โ€œSienna, come on,โ€ Cedric said, worry lacing his voice as he lifted her into his arms. His leg throbbed as he stood.

โ€œSir, let me help you. Your legโ€ฆโ€ the driver said, looking worried.

โ€œI got this,โ€ Cedric said, determination in his voice. He wouldnโ€™t let anyone else carry Sienna, even if it meant enduring the pain in his leg.

The driver could only watch.

Cedric carefully placed Sienna in the car.

โ€œDrive to the nearest hospital,โ€ Cedric told the driver.

โ€œOn it, sir,โ€ the driver replied.

Cedric looked down at Sienna, carefully cradling her. He didnโ€™t want to drop her, but he also didnโ€™t want to squeeze too tight and cause her any discomfort.
