Chapter 207

At Flirty, Josiah found it odd that Joyce frequently mentioned her mother but never her father. Today, Joyce asked him a strange question. Josiah began, โ€œJoyโ€”โ€ intending to gently probe further, but was interrupted.

โ€œJoyce!โ€ A thunderous shout cut him off. Tara, who had been discreetly watching Joyce, panicked at the sight of a man talking to her. She rushed over, breathlessly scooping Joyce into her arms and glaring at Josiah. โ€œWho are you? What were you saying to Joyce? Are you crazy?โ€ she demanded, not giving him a chance to respond.

Clutching Joyce tightly, Tara turned and fled, as if Josiah were a monster. As she hurried away, she comforted Joyce. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Joyce. Iโ€™m here. Remember, you canโ€™t talk to strangers, okay? Good thing I got here in time.โ€ She sighed heavily. โ€œIโ€™m not worried about losing my job, but if you were taken away, your mom would be devastatedโ€ฆโ€ Taraโ€™s voice cracked, tears welling in her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re your momโ€™s whole world. You know that?โ€

Joyce, with concern, lifted her chubby hand to wipe Taraโ€™s tears. โ€œTara, donโ€™t cry. That sir isnโ€™t a bad person. Iโ€™ve seen him before.โ€

Tara frowned skeptically. โ€œWhere did you see him? Whatโ€™s his name?โ€

Joyce opened her mouth, but no words came out. Tara shook her head. โ€œYouโ€™re too little; you must be mistaken. Never mind. From now on, Iโ€™ll keep an even closer eye on you.โ€

Josiah remained where Tara had left him, dumbfounded. Did she seriously just mistake me for a kidnapper? he thought, feeling helpless and exasperated. Joyceโ€™s earlier comments lingered: Are her parents estranged? he wondered, speculating that perhaps her father had abandoned her and her mother. How could anyone walk away from such an adorable daughter? he mused. Watching Joyce being whisked away left him disappointed; he hadn't even gotten a chance to buy her the strawberry milk she liked.

When Sienna returned to the apartment, she immediately noticed Joyceโ€™s unusually subdued demeanor. After checking Joyceโ€™s temperature and finding no fever, Sienna sighed in relief. Before she could relax, Tara explained the incident with the strange man.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ Tara apologized sincerely. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. From now on, Iโ€™ll never leave Joyceโ€™s side, not even for a second.โ€ The thought of Joyce going missing still shook her deeply.

โ€œTara,โ€ Sienna said gently, โ€œthis isnโ€™t your fault. And besides, you handled it well. Joyce is alright.โ€

โ€œAlright? No, no!โ€ Tara gestured toward Joyce, who still seemed upset. โ€œSheโ€™s not sick. Sheโ€™s scared!โ€

Sienna, noticing Taraโ€™s red eyes, offered, โ€œTara, why donโ€™t you take a break? Iโ€™ll take care of Joyce. Iโ€™ll comfort her and help her forget about it.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ Tara nodded reluctantly. โ€œJoyce is closest to you. A little cuddle time with you should make her forget all the bad stuff.โ€

Later that evening, while bathing Joyce, Sienna noticed Joyce wasnโ€™t her usual giggly self, even with her favorite rubber duck. โ€œJoyce,โ€ she asked softly, โ€œare you feeling upset about something today?โ€

Joyce lifted her little face, her eyes blinking. Sienna pressed gently, โ€œJoyce, whatโ€™s wrong? Is there something you canโ€™t tell me?โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not it,โ€ Joyce shook her head, hesitant to upset her mother. But finally, she blurted out, โ€œMommy, every kid has a mom and a dad, right? Moms and dads have to be together to have a baby, right?โ€

Sienna froze. Sheโ€™d known this question would come someday, but Joyce wasnโ€™t born out of parental love; her father utterly despised her mother. Sienna had carefully avoided the topic, but the inevitable had arrived.

โ€œMommy,โ€ Joyceโ€™s glistening eyes stared up at her, tugging on her sleeve. โ€œDo I have a dad too?โ€

Sienna nodded. โ€œYes, of course.โ€

โ€œThen,โ€ Joyceโ€™s eyes lit up, โ€œMommy, whereโ€™s my dad? Why hasnโ€™t he ever come to see me? Does he not like me?โ€

Siennaโ€™s heart shattered. Tears threatened to spill. How could that be? Your dad adored you. When you were little, he spent time with youโ€ฆ even when you were still in my belly, Sienna thought.

โ€œReally?โ€ Joyce furrowed her brow. โ€œI donโ€™t remember that. I mustโ€™ve been too little. But why doesnโ€™t Daddy come to see me now?โ€

Siennaโ€™s throat tightened. โ€œYour dad isโ€ฆ very busy. Super busy.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Joyce looked half-convinced. โ€œSo when heโ€™s not busy anymore, heโ€™ll come see me, right?โ€

Sienna reluctantly nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œThen, Mommy,โ€ Joyceโ€™s spirits lifted, โ€œwhy doesnโ€™t Daddy call me?โ€

Sienna felt her heart stop. She choked out, โ€œYour dadโ€™s work isโ€ฆ very special. He canโ€™t just make phone calls whenever he wants.โ€ The lie came easily, but sheโ€™d rather lie than let Joyce know the truth. Sienna would bear her hatred for Josiah alone. Joyce didnโ€™t need to know.

โ€œI see,โ€ Joyce said, nodding obediently. โ€œIโ€™ll be good and wait at home for Daddy.โ€

Such a good girl, Sienna thought, her heart aching. Joyce, you wonโ€™t be able to wait for him. Youโ€™ll never see your daddy. Joyce, like Sienna once was, was a child abandoned by her father. Sienna remembered begging, โ€œDaddy, please. Iโ€™m begging you. Daddy, please take me with you. I promise Iโ€™ll behave. I wonโ€™t eat much, and Iโ€™ll take care of my little brothers and sistersโ€ฆโ€
