Chapter 207
At Flirty, Josiah found it odd that Joyce frequently mentioned her mother but never her father. Today, Joyce asked him a strange question. Josiah began, โJoyโโ intending to gently probe further, but was interrupted.
โJoyce!โ A thunderous shout cut him off. Tara, who had been discreetly watching Joyce, panicked at the sight of a man talking to her. She rushed over, breathlessly scooping Joyce into her arms and glaring at Josiah. โWho are you? What were you saying to Joyce? Are you crazy?โ she demanded, not giving him a chance to respond.
Clutching Joyce tightly, Tara turned and fled, as if Josiah were a monster. As she hurried away, she comforted Joyce. โDonโt worry, Joyce. Iโm here. Remember, you canโt talk to strangers, okay? Good thing I got here in time.โ She sighed heavily. โIโm not worried about losing my job, but if you were taken away, your mom would be devastatedโฆโ Taraโs voice cracked, tears welling in her eyes. โYouโre your momโs whole world. You know that?โ
Joyce, with concern, lifted her chubby hand to wipe Taraโs tears. โTara, donโt cry. That sir isnโt a bad person. Iโve seen him before.โ
Tara frowned skeptically. โWhere did you see him? Whatโs his name?โ
Joyce opened her mouth, but no words came out. Tara shook her head. โYouโre too little; you must be mistaken. Never mind. From now on, Iโll keep an even closer eye on you.โ
Josiah remained where Tara had left him, dumbfounded. Did she seriously just mistake me for a kidnapper? he thought, feeling helpless and exasperated. Joyceโs earlier comments lingered: Are her parents estranged? he wondered, speculating that perhaps her father had abandoned her and her mother. How could anyone walk away from such an adorable daughter? he mused. Watching Joyce being whisked away left him disappointed; he hadn't even gotten a chance to buy her the strawberry milk she liked.
When Sienna returned to the apartment, she immediately noticed Joyceโs unusually subdued demeanor. After checking Joyceโs temperature and finding no fever, Sienna sighed in relief. Before she could relax, Tara explained the incident with the strange man.
โIโm so sorry,โ Tara apologized sincerely. โDonโt worry. From now on, Iโll never leave Joyceโs side, not even for a second.โ The thought of Joyce going missing still shook her deeply.
โTara,โ Sienna said gently, โthis isnโt your fault. And besides, you handled it well. Joyce is alright.โ
โAlright? No, no!โ Tara gestured toward Joyce, who still seemed upset. โSheโs not sick. Sheโs scared!โ
Sienna, noticing Taraโs red eyes, offered, โTara, why donโt you take a break? Iโll take care of Joyce. Iโll comfort her and help her forget about it.โ
โAlright,โ Tara nodded reluctantly. โJoyce is closest to you. A little cuddle time with you should make her forget all the bad stuff.โ
Later that evening, while bathing Joyce, Sienna noticed Joyce wasnโt her usual giggly self, even with her favorite rubber duck. โJoyce,โ she asked softly, โare you feeling upset about something today?โ
Joyce lifted her little face, her eyes blinking. Sienna pressed gently, โJoyce, whatโs wrong? Is there something you canโt tell me?โ
โNo, thatโs not it,โ Joyce shook her head, hesitant to upset her mother. But finally, she blurted out, โMommy, every kid has a mom and a dad, right? Moms and dads have to be together to have a baby, right?โ
Sienna froze. Sheโd known this question would come someday, but Joyce wasnโt born out of parental love; her father utterly despised her mother. Sienna had carefully avoided the topic, but the inevitable had arrived.
โMommy,โ Joyceโs glistening eyes stared up at her, tugging on her sleeve. โDo I have a dad too?โ
Sienna nodded. โYes, of course.โ
โThen,โ Joyceโs eyes lit up, โMommy, whereโs my dad? Why hasnโt he ever come to see me? Does he not like me?โ
Siennaโs heart shattered. Tears threatened to spill. How could that be? Your dad adored you. When you were little, he spent time with youโฆ even when you were still in my belly, Sienna thought.
โReally?โ Joyce furrowed her brow. โI donโt remember that. I mustโve been too little. But why doesnโt Daddy come to see me now?โ
Siennaโs throat tightened. โYour dad isโฆ very busy. Super busy.โ
โOh,โ Joyce looked half-convinced. โSo when heโs not busy anymore, heโll come see me, right?โ
Sienna reluctantly nodded. โYes.โ
โThen, Mommy,โ Joyceโs spirits lifted, โwhy doesnโt Daddy call me?โ
Sienna felt her heart stop. She choked out, โYour dadโs work isโฆ very special. He canโt just make phone calls whenever he wants.โ The lie came easily, but sheโd rather lie than let Joyce know the truth. Sienna would bear her hatred for Josiah alone. Joyce didnโt need to know.
โI see,โ Joyce said, nodding obediently. โIโll be good and wait at home for Daddy.โ
Such a good girl, Sienna thought, her heart aching. Joyce, you wonโt be able to wait for him. Youโll never see your daddy. Joyce, like Sienna once was, was a child abandoned by her father. Sienna remembered begging, โDaddy, please. Iโm begging you. Daddy, please take me with you. I promise Iโll behave. I wonโt eat much, and Iโll take care of my little brothers and sistersโฆโ
