Chapter 244

โ€œAh!โ€ Zaid was startled. โ€œMs. Shawโ€ฆโ€

โ€œZaid, donโ€™t be nervous,โ€ Sienna smiled, explaining. โ€œYou go ahead first. I went straight to the dance troupe from the hospital this morning. Iโ€™ll take a shower and change clothes. If Josiah asks, just tell him Iโ€™ll be there a bit later.โ€

โ€œOh, I see.โ€ Zaid sighed in relief. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll take the suitcase over first. Give me a call before you leave, and Iโ€™ll pick you up.โ€

โ€œThank you, Zaid.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome,โ€ Zaid replied.

After seeing Zaid off, Sienna went upstairs, chose some clothes, and headed to the bathroom. Her earlier statement wasn't an excuse; she genuinely needed to freshen up.

While blow-drying her hair after her shower, Sienna yawned repeatedly, tears welling from exhaustion. Overcome with sleepiness, she felt lightheaded and collapsed onto the bed the moment she left the bathroom.

Sleep overwhelmed her instantly. โ€˜Iโ€™ll just sleep for a bit,โ€™ she thought, โ€˜I really canโ€™t hold on any longer.โ€™ She closed her eyes and drifted off.

Zaid delivered the suitcase to the ward, where a nurse was changing Josiahโ€™s IV. He glanced behind Zaid, but not seeing Sienna, asked, โ€œWhy are you here alone? Whereโ€™s Sienna?โ€

โ€œMs. Shaw couldnโ€™t come,โ€ Zaid relayed Siennaโ€™s message. โ€œSheโ€™ll be here later.โ€ He carried the suitcase to the wardrobe, adding, โ€œIโ€™ve put the things away.โ€

โ€œMm-hmm,โ€ Josiah nodded, his brow furrowing slightly, his unease growing.

As dusk settled, Sienna still hadnโ€™t arrived. Unable to sit still, he called her. It took two tries before she answered.

โ€œHello?โ€ Sienna mumbled sleepily. โ€œWho is it? Whatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œSienna,โ€ Josiah guessed, hearing her voice. โ€œAre you sleeping?โ€

โ€œMm-hmmโ€ฆโ€ Sienna was still half-asleep. โ€œIโ€™m really tired. Is there something you need?โ€

Josiah hesitated. โ€œNothing, thenโ€ฆ you sleep.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ She hung up without a goodbye.

โ€œSienna,โ€ Josiah called out, his phone still in his hand, confirming the disconnected call. Anger surged. Sienna wasnโ€™t coming back. He raised his arm and smashed his new phone onto the ground. It shattered with a crackle.

Zach opened the door at that moment, quickly approaching Josiah. Knowing the reason for his upset, Zach called a caretaker to clean up, saying, โ€œMr. Flynn, Iโ€™ll go get Sienna right away.โ€ He started to leave.

โ€œStop!โ€ Josiah called him back.

His face darkened. โ€œWho gave you permission to take matters into your own hands? Sienna is sleeping, and youโ€™re not allowed to disturb her rest.โ€

Zach was astonished. Is Mr. Flynn serious? he thought. Heโ€™s injured, and Sienna, his girlfriend, should be here. He must feel the same way, yet heโ€™s worried about her sleep? Besides, is it even possible to sleep in this hospital room?

Josiah looked at Zach. โ€œSienna didnโ€™t sleep well last night. Donโ€™t bother her. Itโ€™s more comfortable at home than in the hospital. Let her sleep.โ€

โ€œYes, sir,โ€ Zach agreed.

Sienna slept until the next morning, not even getting up to eat. After a restful sleep, she felt refreshed. Downstairs, the housekeeper had prepared breakfast. Sienna ate leisurely, checked the time, and realized it was time for the hospital.

She didnโ€™t call Zaid. She took the bus and then the subway, taking her time.

Early that morning at the hospital, Howard and Yvette had arrived, just as the doctor was making his rounds.

โ€œMr. Flynn, thereโ€™s no serious issue. He just needs to stay for a few more days and continue with the regular treatment,โ€ the doctor said.

โ€œThank you for your hard work,โ€ Howard replied.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome,โ€ the doctor said. As soon as he left, Yvette looked around, frowning. โ€œWhere is Sienna? Sheโ€™s not here for the doctorโ€™s rounds? She didnโ€™t hear the instructions! How is she supposed to take care of you!โ€

Josiah furrowed his brows. โ€œShe didnโ€™t rest well the day before yesterday. I let her go home to sleep last night.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Yvette was shocked. โ€œYou let her go home! And sheโ€ฆ she really went!โ€

โ€œMm-hmm,โ€ Josiah responded indifferently.

Yvette sneered. โ€œHow interesting! Her boyfriend is in the hospital, and sheโ€™s at ease.โ€

โ€œYvette,โ€ Howard interjected, โ€œSienna really is tired.โ€

โ€œWhy are you making excuses for her?โ€ Yvette turned to Howard. โ€œJosiah is confused, and are you confused too? Heโ€™s bewitched! I canโ€™t believe you canโ€™t see it. Siennaโ€™s heart isnโ€™t with Josiah at all. His feelings for her are one-sided. As his older brother, you should advise him to stop while heโ€™s ahead. Donโ€™t let him misplace his true feelings.โ€

As she spoke, the door clicked open, and Sienna walked in. Yvette stopped abruptly, and the ward fell silent.

Sienna smiled. โ€œGood morning, Howard, good morning.โ€

โ€œGood morning,โ€ Howard responded softly. He glanced at Yvette and rose with his cane.

โ€œNow that Siennaโ€™s here, letโ€™s go,โ€ Howard said, offering his arm to Yvette.

Yvette glared at him lightly, taking his arm. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll do as you say.โ€

Howard patted her hand, looking at Sienna and teasing, โ€œWith you taking care of Josiah, we wonโ€™t disturb you. Heโ€™s been missing you all night. He was so persistent, I almost got tired of hearing it.โ€

Sienna, not picking up on his words, watched them leave. She turned to Josiah, staring at his handsome, pale face, pursing her lips.

โ€œSorry, I just wanted to rest yesterday, but I was so tired I couldnโ€™t get up. How was your night?โ€

Josiah looked at her quietly. Her words were fineโ€”an explanation, an apology, and concern. But he felt something was missing. She was there, yet distant. He frowned. โ€œItโ€™s fine. I wonโ€™t die.โ€

Sienna chuckled. A knock came; it was the nurse. What kind of answer is that? Is he upset? Sienna thought.

โ€œMs. Shaw,โ€ the nurse asked, โ€œExcuse me, has Mr. Flynn had breakfast? He canโ€™t have an IV on an empty stomach.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Josiah spoke before Sienna could answer.

Sienna looked at him in surprise. โ€œItโ€™s already this late. Havenโ€™t you eaten anything?โ€

Josiah gave a self-mocking laugh. โ€œMy girlfriend just got here, right? And it looks like you came empty-handed. What am I supposed to eat?โ€
