Moved up in line, counting down on her fingers, she murmured, “Five left… four to go…”
Finally, it was Josiah’s turn. He paid and grabbed the muffins, grinning when he saw only three blueberry muffins remained. Luckily, Seasonal Bakery’s muffins were quite large, and he assumed these should suffice for Sienna.
He scanned the crowd; Sienna spotted him instantly. She jumped up and rushed over. “Did you get them?”
Josiah nodded and started toward her. Suddenly, a voice called out, halting him mid-stride.
“Mr. Flynn! Oh, it’s really you.” Janet’s eyes sparkled with recognition, and she gestured outside. “Yvette’s in the car. She’s here to grab some muffins.”
She complained, “Yvette wants blueberry muffins, but they were all sold out by the time I got there. You know how picky she is—she won’t eat anything else.”
“We have a whole morning of shooting planned, and if she doesn’t eat, it’s going to cause a real headache—”
Suddenly, Janet paused, her eyes falling on the paper bag in Josiah’s hand. “Mr. Flynn, are you here to buy muffins too?”
“Yeah,” Josiah’s charming face showed a hint of awkwardness, especially with Sienna just a few steps away.
“What flavor did you get?” Janet asked, either carelessly or without thinking.
Josh frowned but didn’t respond. Janet’s eyes flicked to the bag, and she saw the words. “Oh! Blueberry muffins!”
For the first time, Josiah felt annoyed by the attentive service at Seasonal Bakery.
“Janet?” Wene, probably tired of waiting in the car, approached, wearing sunglasses and a mask. “Is it really taking that long to buy some muffins?”
Then she spotted Josiah and Sienna. “Josiah, Sienna, did you come here for breakfast too?”
“Yeah,” Josiah nodded.
Janet quickly interjected, “Yvette, the blueberry muffins are sold out. But Mr. Flynn got some.” She shot a glance at Josiah, hinting that he might give them to Yvette.
Yvette raised an eyebrow, curious. “You actually got the blueberry ones! But you don’t like those, do you? I thought chocolate was your favorite!”
They had grown up together, so she knew Josiah wasn’t fond of fruit. ‘Blueberry means fruit, so why would he buy them for himself? Could it be… she thought and blurted out, “You bought them for someone else? For Sienna, right?”
“Yeah,” Josiah admitted. “She stayed up all night with Grandma and hasn’t eaten anything this morning.”
Yvette understood and chuckled. “Sienna, you should eat quickly before they get cold. I need to rush to the set.”
Without waiting for Josiah to respond, she grabbed Janet. “Let’s go.”
Janet complained, “Yvette! Why didn’t you just let Mr. Flynn give the muffins to you? If you asked, he’d definitely agree.”
“You talk too much. Let’s move.”
“I’m just looking out for you. You’ll be hungry until lunch if you don’t eat.”
Josiah overheard their conversation and thought that if Howard were well, he would never let Yvette go hungry. He glanced at Sienna, who was still waiting, and said, “I’ll get you more.”
With that, he hurried after Yvette, calling out, “Yvette!”
Yvette paused, confused. “What’s up?”
Josiah handed her the bag. “Here you go. How can you get through the morning without eating? You need to take care of yourself.”
“But…” Yvette hesitated, reluctant to accept. “What about Sienna?”
Josiah chuckled, clearly unfazed. “There are other muffins. I’ll get some for her later. She won’t starve.”
“Well…” Yvette still hesitated.
“Just take it.” Josiah gently held her hand and placed the bag in her palm.
Yvette smiled. “Alright then. I’ll head out now. I’m in a bit of a rush. See you.”
“Okay,” Josiah replied, watching Yvette leave. He then turned to Sienna. “I’ll grab some more for you. I’ll just wait in line again.”
“No need,” Sienna reminded him. “Didn’t you remember? The blueberry muffins are all gone.”
Josiah frowned, annoyed. “Aren’t there other flavors? Are you really that picky? You can only eat blueberry muffins and nothing else?”
Sienna was momentarily taken aback, then let out a bitter laugh. “Mr. Flynn really knows how to play favorites. Yvette can choose to only eat blueberry muffins, but when it comes to me, I’m the one being picky? Did he forget that the muffins he gave to appease Yvette were originally a thank-you gift he promised to me?”
