Chapter 322
On the third day, seventy-two hours passed, and Josiah showed no signs of waking. The doctor made his rounds, frowning and shaking his head. Howard's heart sankโthe worst had happened.
"Why are you shaking your head?" Yvette demanded, her eyes red with anger. "Don't just shake your head! You're the doctor; think of a way to wake him up!"
The doctor replied awkwardly, "Ms. Young, I've done everything I can. The rest is up to Josiah himself."
"That's nonsense!" Yvette shouted. "If you're not skilled enough, just say so! The Flynn family has plenty of money. Are you telling me we can't hire a better doctor? You're fired!"
She turned to Howard. "Howard, fire him immediately! And get a good doctor for Josiah right away!"
"Howardโฆ" the doctor stammered, terrified.
Howard grasped Yvette's wrist. "Yvette, calm down. Acting like this won't help Josiah."
"Then what should I do?" Yvette's eyes momentarily blanked. She rushed to the bedside, grabbed Josiah's collar, and shook him. "Josiah! Get up! What are you doing lying here? The Evans family would love it if you just gave up, wouldn't they? Get up! This cowardly behaviorโฆ I can't look at you! Get up and face the Evans family! You're not the kid you used to be. You're capable now! Get up!"
Yvette cried and yelled, her fists pounding Josiah's body. The doctors and nurses watched in shock. "Yvette!" Howard intervened, grabbing her arm. "Stop it! Haven't you hurt him enough?"
"What should we do then?" Yvette looked up, tears streaming. "Aren't we the closest people to him? We've stayed by his side day and night. The doctors say everything is fine with him, so why won't he wake up?"
Howard remained silent. "Howard!" Yvette cried, throwing herself into his arms. "What should we do?"
"He'll wake up, Josiah will definitely wake up," Howard said firmly, the words meant to comfort both of them.
In the Sunshine Neighborhood, after breakfast, Tara offered to clean the kitchen. "You all go have some fun. I'll handle this." Sienna had been cooking the past few days, so Tara felt uneasy about it.
"Thank you for your hard work, Tara," Sienna said.
"Not at all," Tara replied; it was her job.
Sienna entered the living room with Rosie. Joyce was quietly playing with her new Lego set. Suddenly, Rosie covered her eyes and groaned.
"Rosie?" Sienna asked. "What's wrong? Do your eyes hurt?"
Rosie nodded, rubbing her temples. "Yes. My eyes feel strained, and I have a slight headache."
This was serious. Rosie's eye surgery was scheduled for the new year, and complications couldn't be risked. Rosie needed a doctor, but her usual ophthalmologist wasn't available on short notice. Appointments required advance reservations. Sienna considered her options. She needed to reach Howard, although she'd recently refused his offer to take her to the hospital. She decided to call, torn but resolute, unable to ignore Rosie's condition.
The call went through quickly. "Hey, Sienna," Howard said, his voice tired and quiet.
"Hey, Howard," Sienna thought, 'Could it be that Josiah hasn't woken up yet?' She didn't ask, explaining Rosie's situation instead. "I want to take her to the doctor, but appointments are required." She waited nervously.
Howard said calmly, "I got it. I'll be there soon."
Sienna was stunned. "Okay, Howard." After hanging up, she wondered if Howard was coming himself; she'd only intended to ask for his help with a call, but his presence would be even more effective.
She told Rosie, "Howard will be here soon to take you to the doctor."
"What?" Rosie was surprised and anxious. "I feel bad. Isn't he still at the hospital with Mr. Flynn?"
Sienna found it strange too. Howard was nice, but he seemed overly attentive to Rosie.
Howard arrived at the Sunshine Neighborhood, parking below the apartment. Meanwhile, Yvette arrived, having obtained Sienna's address from her agent. Sienna had registered there as a dance instructor.
Yvette exited the taxi, taking a deep breath. Josiah hadn't woken up, and she was determined to try everything. If Sienna could help, it would be a significant breakthrough.
She recognized Howard's black Cayenne. She thought, 'Howard and I have the same idea. He's here for Josiah. That's even better. Once Howard speaks up, how could Sienna refuse?'
Yvette froze as Howard exited his car and Sienna emerged from the building with Rosie. She recognized Rosie, the designer of her wedding dress. Rosie looked unwell.
Sienna nodded to Howard. "Hmm," Howard responded, opening the car door. Rosie blinked, noting his habit of using "hmm."
Sienna helped Rosie into the car, and Howard got in the front passenger seat. As the car drove away, Yvette was confused. Howard was giving them a ride. Where were they going? She realized Howard always treated Sienna like a friend; Sienna wasn't the owner of the tortoiseshell hairpin, and she wasn't Bobby's mother.
