Chapter 361
โThe doctorโs words are all lies, arenโt they?โ Yvette shouted, suddenly grabbing Josiahโs collar. Her eyes flashed with intensity. โHeโs a quack, isnโt he?โ
Josiah remained silent, his lips pressed tightly together. Earlier, the doctor had discovered problems with Yvetteโs lower limb sensation and reflexes. His alarming prognosis still echoed in the air: โMr. Flynn, Ms. Youngโs back muscles and nerves are injured from the accident; her lower limbs may become immobile.โ
โWhat does that mean?โ Josiah had asked.
โParaplegia.โ The word plunged Yvette into despair and Josiah into a pit of guilt.
After a long silence, Yvetteโs emotions threatened to overflow. Her eyes were wild and bloodshot. โI canโt be fixed! Why am I even alive?โ She released his collar and nearly collapsed. Even as Josiah tried to help, her rage was overwhelming. โLet go of me! I said let go!โ
Josiah frowned, worried for her safety, and called for the nurse. The nurse quickly returned with the doctor, who urgently instructed, โGive her a tranquilizer!โ
Yvette fought violently. Only with the combined efforts of Josiah and the nurse could they restrain her. Once the tranquilizer took effect, she finally quieted, her eyelids drooping as she went limp in Josiahโs arms. He sighed, gently laying her on the bed.
Outside, Sienna sat on a bench, observing the scene through the half-open door. She was surprised by Yvetteโs distress; it was undeniably difficult.
When the room fell silent, the doctor emerged, followed by Josiah. He approached Sienna, looking weary. He leaned back in a chair, his gaze fixed on the floor, and murmured, โSince that nightโฆโ
Sienna understood โ the night of their kidnapping. She nodded. Despite her dislike for Yvette, she felt a fleeting pang of sympathy for her plight. This feeling was brief, however, lacking any real depth. โCan I leave now?โ Sienna asked.
Josiah frowned, taking her hand. โHer condition is because of me. Can you understand that? I canโt just leave her.โ
Sienna looked at him. โDoes my feeling even matter to you?โ
โSienna,โ Josiah tightened his grip on her hand.
A sarcastic laugh escaped Siennaโs lips. โIf I donโt understand, will you stop caring for her? Your question is pointless.โ Looking at his hand on hers, she added, โStill holding on? After keeping me here so long. I just want to go home and sleep.โ Her voice was calm, her demeanor indifferent. She had no desire for conflict. Josiah felt a knot in his stomach, unable to find the right words. He released her hand, rising to his feet. โIโll take you home.โ
โAre you really leaving?โ Sienna asked, surprised. โWhat if she wakes up and canโt find you? Wonโt she panic?โ
Josiah glanced at her. โShe just received a tranquilizer; she wonโt wake up quickly.โ
Before Sienna could respond, he led her outside and drove her back to Sunshine Neighborhood. He walked her to her apartment building. โGet some rest; Iโll be back tomorrow.โ
Sienna looked up at him. โArenโt you tired?โ Her concern was evident. โYou must be worn out. Yvette needs your full attention.โ
Josiah frowned, his voice tight. โAre you pitying me? Or looking for a reason to break up?โ He searched her face for any sign of displeasure, finding none.
Sienna chuckled softly. โYou misunderstand. I wouldnโt dream of breaking up with you; Joyce still depends on you. Iโm just worried about you, thatโs all.โ
Josiah laughed incredulously, cupping her chin. โI know you donโt have feelings for me; thereโs no need to remind me.โ Leaning down, his breath brushed her face. โWhat kind of tricks are you playing? Do you think annoying me will make me let you go? Get some sleep.โ
When Josiah returned to the hospital, Howard was waiting. Howard glanced at his brother. โWhat are the next steps?โ
A heavy worry clouded Josiahโs face. โItโs too late tonight. Iโve asked Zach to contact specialists from every hospital in the city. They will meet for a consultation tomorrow.โ
Howard nodded. That was their only plan.
The next day, at eight-thirty, Joyce woke up. โJosiah?โ
Sienna rushed in, picking up her daughter. โYouโre awake!โ
โMommyโฆโ Joyce, still sleepy, looked towards the door. โWhere is Josiah?โ She had grown accustomed to seeing him first thing in the morning, him dressing her, and sharing breakfast.
Sienna paused, tapping her daughterโs nose. โJosiah is busy today.โ
โJosiah isnโt coming,โ Joyce pouted. โHe broke his promise!โ
Sienna felt a pang of sympathy for her daughter and annoyance towards Josiah. She could forgive him for his actions towards her, but he should never let Joyce down. โBe good, Joyce. Youโre wearing your Minnie Mouse dress today.โ
โOh,โ Joyceโs head drooped. โWill Josiah come to have lunch with me?โ
โJoyce, be good. Mommyโs here with you.โ
Joyce, understanding he wouldnโt come, asked, โWill he come today?โ
Sienna struggled to answer. After getting Joyce ready, she called Josiah. After several rings, he answered. โWhere are you?โ Sienna asked. โWillโโ
โSienna,โ Josiah hesitated. โI was about to call you; I canโt come this morning. Please tell Joyceโฆโ
โWill you be here soon?โ
Sienna sneered. โYou didnโt say that last night.โ
