Chapter 57

Josiah slowed his pace and approached the house without alerting anyone inside.

“Who is it?” Miranda asked, her heart racing as she held Sienna’s hand. “Is it someone I know? Is he reliable?”

Sienna couldn’t elaborate, “He’s mature, steady, and most importantly, he likes me and will be good to me.”

Hearing this, Miranda was silent. Everything Sienna described was what Josiah lacked. “Well,” Miranda sighed, “Sounds good.”

“Yes,” Sienna nodded. “Grandma, please agree. Otherwise, I won’t have the face to see him.”

“Sienna,” Miranda was still hesitant. “Does Josiah really have no chance at all?”

“Grandma?” Sienna found the question absurd. “He doesn’t need a chance. On the contrary, getting divorced is a relief for him.” Their relationship seemed beyond repair. Miranda finally nodded. “Alright, since you’ve already found where you belong, we can’t keep holding you back.”

Sienna was overjoyed. “Thank you, Grandma.”

“You’re here,” Miranda noticed Josiah approaching slowly and quietly. She sighed. “You’ve heard what Sienna said.”

Sienna, facing away from the door, only then noticed Josiah. She quickly stood and nodded politely.

“Yeah,” Josiah replied casually.

Miranda said, “Then I won’t repeat her.” She gave Josiah a frustrated look and said with a mix of reluctance and resignation, “Find some time to go to the courthouse with Sienna.”

“Thank you, Grandma,” Sienna said, smiling.

Josiah noticed Sienna’s happiness and wondered who she had mentioned.

“Sienna,” Miranda, still attached and worried, said, “When you get a chance, bring him to meet me, okay? Let me check him out for you.” Sienna had married the wrong man once, largely because of her own choices. This time, she needed to carefully evaluate her partner.

But Sienna dared not argue. She chuckled lightly and replied casually, “Yeah, I know, whenever he’s free.”

“Then I will be waiting,” Miranda said, gesturing to Josiah. “What are you standing there for? Since you’re here, sit down and have some afternoon tea with me.”

“Oh, alright.”

“Sienna,” Miranda waved, instructing, “Could you please fetch a set of cutlery for Josiah?”

“Sure, it’s no trouble,” Sienna agreed and got up to do so.

As soon as she left, Miranda’s expression turned serious as she looked at Josiah. “Who does Sienna like?”

“Huh?” Josiah was taken aback, shaking his head and answering truthfully, “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” Miranda sneered, squinting. “What did I tell you? You’re supposed to look after Sienna like she’s your sister. Is this how you treat your sister, with such indifference?”

Josiah was silent.

Miranda remained unconvinced. “You need experience to be nice to someone? If you cared for Sienna even half as much as you do for Yvette, that would be enough.”

“Grandma?” Josiah was startled, breaking out in a cold sweat. “What are you saying? I don’t have those feelings for Yvette—”

“Enough, I don’t want to argue with you,” Miranda scoffed. “I just want to know who Sienna’s boyfriend is and if he’s genuinely good to her. Is there a problem?”

“No,” Josiah nodded, agreeing. Even without Miranda’s prompting, he would have investigated thoroughly himself.

Leaving the nursing home, Josiah drove Sienna. This time, without needing a reminder, Sienna instinctively climbed into the passenger seat.

As the car pulled away, she turned to Josiah, asking, “When are we going to the courthouse? Will you arrange a time and let me know?”

“Hmm,” Josiah replied absentmindedly. Trying to seem uninterested, he said, “You’ve only been back in Jelacrity a few days and already found a boyfriend? That was quick.”

Sienna paused, then smiled. “Yeah, feelings have nothing to do with how long you’ve known someone. Even if you’ve known some people for years, you just don’t like them.”

Josiah’s eyes darkened at those words. He wondered if she was implying something about him. His heart suddenly felt heavy, and his grip on the steering wheel tightened.

“Listen, Sienna, don’t let love make you lose your mind. Just because someone treats you a bit better, don’t go losing your head over it!”

“I won’t,” Sienna said, shaking her head gently. “Not many people treat me well. After Fiona passed away, there’s only been Grandma. Howard used to treat me really well too. He’s the third one, and I’m very grateful to him.”

Hearing this, Josiah’s breath caught. He wanted to retort; he wanted to know if Sienna thought he treated her well. The words caught in his throat. He really hadn’t been kind to her; not just unkind, perhaps even downright awful.

But he couldn’t entirely blame himself. If she hadn’t clung to him and insisted on marrying him, he might have been nicer. His thoughts became inexplicably restless. He had to find out who her new boyfriend was.

That evening, Sienna went to Maze as usual. Henry came to the dressing room and told her, “Sienna, I’ve contacted Ryan. Everything’s set up for you. Get ready.”

“Alright,” Sienna took a deep breath and nodded. “Thank you.”

“Hey, no need to be so formal,” Henry said with excitement and a hint of nostalgia. “In the future, I’ll need you to speak highly of me there.”

“You’re too kind, Henry,” Sienna replied with a smile, her mind racing. Some things just had to be done. The next day, Sienna visited the hospital. She registered, waited in line, and saw the doctor.

After the check-up and receiving medication, the doctor tapped the prescription, looking at her hesitantly. “You shouldn’t take too much of this medicine. Follow the dosage I prescribe very carefully.”

“Yes, I understand.”

“If you notice any side effects, stop taking it immediately and come see me.”

“Okay.”

“And another thing,” the doctor handed her the prescription. “Remember, you must come back for follow-ups regularly. You’re my patient, and I have a responsibility to you.”

“Alright, thank you. Sorry for the trouble,” Sienna took the prescription, went outside, paid, and collected her medication.

She had only been able to contact this doctor through a favor from Hannah. Given her situation, the doctor wouldn’t normally prescribe this. But she desperately needed it.

That was why she had reached out to Hannah for help, and that’s how she managed to get the medicine smoothly.

She knew the medication was harmful, but she had no choice. Her problem with being touched would prevent her from getting close to Ryan.
