Chapter 42

Hailey jumped from the bed and ran from the room, with Ollie running and crying behind her.

She reached the twins' room and saw her son lying on the floor. She knelt beside him, shaking his small body. “Enzo, my love, please answer me. Please open your eyes.” Ollie knelt beside Hailey, crying. “Mommy, please wake him up. I want my brother back.” “Enzo,” she caressed his cold cheek. “My love, please open your eyes.” Hailey turned to Ollie. “We need to take him to the hospital.” Ollie nodded, though clueless about what was happening. Hailey lifted Enzo and rushed him from the room, with Ollie running behind. She grabbed her keys and purse, and made sure Ollie wore a jacket because of the cold. They left the house. She placed Enzo in the back seat and Ollie sat beside his brother, crying. Hailey drove from the mansion at high speed, her eyes tearful.

They arrived at the hospital in exactly thirty minutes, and the nurses took Enzo to the ER. Hailey sniffled, wiping her tears, then crouched to Ollie’s height. The little boy cried uncontrollably. She kissed his forehead. “It’s okay, baby. Your brother will be fine.” “Promise me, Mommy.” Hailey sobbed. Her lips quivered, but she quickly composed herself, knowing she had to be strong for Ollie. “The doctor is already attending to him. Enzo will be fine.” “Do you want something to drink?” she asked when Ollie started hiccuping. The little boy shook his head. “I w…want my b…brother.” Hailey sighed, kissing his head. She stood, took Ollie’s hand, and they walked from the ward door to the reception. Hailey asked a passing nurse for water for Ollie. The nurse promised to return shortly.

While Ollie sat crying silently, Hailey reached for her phone in her pajama pocket and called Debbie. “Hi babe, missing me?” “Enzo!” Hearing Hailey’s voice, Debbie sat up. “What happened to him?” Chapter 42 “We’re at the hospital.” “I’ll be there in ten,” Debbie said, ending the call. Hailey sat beside her son, trying to calm him. Debbie’s apartment was closer to the hospital, and she arrived in twelve minutes. She found Hailey easily. “What happened?” she asked, worry etched on her face. “Ollie said he went to the bathroom. He came back and barely made it to his bed. I don’t know. We’re waiting for the doctors to tell us what’s going on. I can’t afford to lose my baby.” “Ollie won’t stop crying either. He’s hiccuping but refuses water.” Debbie squeezed Hailey’s shoulder, then sat beside Ollie. She wiped his tears. “Your brother is going to be fine, okay? Please have some water.” He shook his head, sniffling. “Enzo wouldn’t be happy that you’re being stubborn and not taking care of yourself. You want Enzo to be angry at you?” The little boy shook his head. “Please have some water so you won’t get sick.” Debbie opened the bottled water and gave him some to stop his hiccups.

Almost immediately, the doctor walked from the ward, and Hailey stood. Debbie followed, while Ollie remained seated. “How is he?” Hailey asked the middle-aged doctor. “Not good. We urgently need to find a donor for a bone marrow transplant.” Fresh tears welled in Hailey’s eyes. “I checked his records and saw that you and his twin brother aren’t a match. Do you have any other family members to call? If we don’t find a perfect match and perform the surgery immediately, I’m sorry to say this, but we might lose him.” Tears streamed down Hailey’s cheek. She was speechless. “Thanks, Doc. Please give us a couple of minutes. We’ll find someone,” Debbie said. The doctor nodded and left. Debbie turned to Hailey. “Call Cole.” “B…but what if…” Chapter 42 “Dammit, Hailey! Just fucking call him! This is a matter of life and death. You two can sort out your shit later.” Debbie’s voice rose. “He’s the father. Who knows, he might be a perfect match.” Hailey took her phone and with shaky hands, dialed Cole.

Cole was driving to the airport when his phone rang. He glanced at his phone and was shocked to see the caller ID. He connected it to his car speaker and answered, eyes on the road. “Cole…” He sensed trouble in her voice. “Hailey. Are you okay?” “We need you, Cole. Enzo is sick. There’s going to be surgery. You have to be…” Cole’s heart sank. He interrupted. “Which hospital?” “Springville.” “Stay calm. I’ll be there in five.” Cole ended the call and immediately turned the car around. Springville was a well-known private hospital. Driving at high speed, Cole called Itam, who was waiting for him at the airport. Before Itam could speak, Cole said, “Itam, I have an emergency. I can’t make it. I know this weakens our chances of getting the deal, but someone dear to me needs me. Do your best at the meeting. I have to go.” Cole ended the call and sped towards Springville Hospital.
