Ever since Clara went missing, none of us have slept well. We’ve been doing our best to find her and bring her home safely.
Damon is a mess. According to Luca, he barely sleeps, and even when he does, he mutters Clara's name until he wakes. I didn't know how to help him.
Luca's arms around my waist pulled me from my thoughts.
"You've been ignoring me," he said. "You haven't replied to my texts or answered my calls." He gestured, and I sighed.
It was true. I'd been ignoring Luca because I felt guilty acting so affectionate while Damon and Clara were separated for days. It didn't help knowing Damon had sent Clara away to protect her from me and my father.
"How's Damon? Has he come up with a plan yet?" I asked, gently freeing myself from Luca's embrace and turning to face him. He stared at me, sighed, and shook his head.
"I haven't been able to get the Hunter's leader's number, or any of their members', but I'm doing everything I can," he said. I frowned. "So what's the plan?" I asked. He sighed again.
"We're all doing everything we can…"
"But it's not enough! What if something happens to Clara? She's pregnant, for crying out loud!" I screamed, instantly regretting it. I knew they were all trying their hardest.
"I'm sorry," he began, but I was interrupted. He grabbed my hand, kissed me, and continued, "You don't have to apologize. I know it's been hard, worrying about Clara and Damon, but don't worry so much about him. No matter how down he feels, he won't give up until he finds Clara. He knows she'll be upset if he doesn't take care of himself, so he's trying to eat and sleep a little. Don't worry. I have a feeling we'll find her soon." He caressed my hair, smiling, and I smiled back, wrapping my arms around his waist and resting my head on his chest.
"I've missed you so much, and I'm sorry I've been ignoring you."
"You don't have to explain, baby. I understand. We'll find her, I promise," he murmured. I sighed, sinking deeper into his embrace.
"I wish I could help," I murmured. We were quiet for a moment, then an idea struck me.
"Have you asked Dimitri? He must have a number," I said, pulling away and looking at Luca with wide eyes.
"I've tried, your father has tried, but he wouldn't say a word," Luca explained. Anger surged within me. He was the one who put Clara in this situation, and he had the nerve to withhold information that could save her?
"I'm going to see him and knock some sense into his head," I muttered, storming off. Luca didn't stop me; he even offered to drive, which I accepted. Soon, we were at the dungeons.
He led me to Dimitri's secluded cell.
"What's wrong with you?" I said, appearing before his cell. He looked terrible, but I didn't care. I just wanted answers.
"If you have a number, give it to us! Don't you want Clara saved? What if she's being threatened because of your stupidity?!" I screamed, clenching the bars.
"She wouldn't get hurt; her uncle wouldn't hurt her," he murmured softly. I scoffed.
"What's your problem? Why won't you help?!" I screamed. He sighed, turned to me, and I gasped. His eyes were swollen and red from crying. My heart ached. Dimitri was always cheerful; seeing him like this was heartbreaking.
"What's the use? I've failed everyone. I've failed Damon. It's better if I stay out of it," he murmured almost inaudibly.
Dimitri and I always looked up to Damon. He was our role model, and we competed for his approval. I understood Dimitri's feelings.
"I know how you feel, Dimitri. You disappointed Damon, but this is your chance to redeem yourself. We know you had good reasons, but Damon can't see that because Clara is missing. If you help find her, don't you think that would make him feel better? He needs her, Dimitri," I reasoned. He went quiet, then sighed. "I don't have the number, but I know someone who does. There's an unsaved number on my phone, ending in 93. Call it; he should have answers," he said. Hope surged, and I smiled.
"Do you have his phone?" I asked, turning to Luca, who nodded.
"Do you even know what he wants the number for? I know Damon isn't just going to ask for Clara back. He has a plan, doesn't he?" Dimitri asked, looking at Luca, who pursed his lips.
"Of course he has a plan," Luca replied. Dimitri frowned.
"Is it dangerous?" he asked. I turned to Luca, waiting for his answer.
"It doesn't matter. You all know Damon would sacrifice his life for Clara. It's our job to make sure it doesn't come to that. We need to help. If you know anything, now's the time to speak up."
