“I think you should stay here, dear. You’re pregnant; you shouldn’t be involving yourself in this,” Aunt Amelia said from behind me, watching as I packed a small bag of necessities for the trip.

“There’s no way I’m going to let Damon suffer. Don’t worry, Aunt, I’ll be fine,” I assured her, though I knew she didn’t believe me. I didn’t believe myself, either. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into; it was dangerous, but I had to try everything. I tried calling Delilah and Luca, but they didn’t answer. Something was terribly wrong. Had they been captured as well?

“But what exactly can you do?” she asked. Before I could reply, I heard Liam’s voice.

“Don’t you remember? Clara was the best female warrior in our pack and always fought beside me. Plus, I’ll be right by her side,” he assured Aunt Amelia. I heard her sigh in relief.

“But the children? They might get hurt. Are you willing to risk it?” she asked softly. I paused, slowly turning to her as I rubbed my stomach.

“I’ll protect them and their father with my life. If anything happens to them, know that I’m dead,” I said. Her gasp was loud, reflecting the seriousness in my eyes.

A knock came at the door.

“Are you ready? We should go; it’s a long journey,” Romeo called from the other side.

I grabbed my bag, but Liam took it from me before I could turn around, slinging it over his shoulder.

“I can carry it,” I said. He smiled.

“I know, but I insist. A pregnant woman shouldn’t carry heavy things,” he said, winking before walking away. I sighed, turning to Aunt Amelia, who looked close to tears.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be okay. Afterward, you can come live in my pack and help me with the children, like a grandmother. What do you say?” Tears streamed down her cheeks.

I hugged her tightly, fighting back my own tears.

“Okay, my love. I’ll be waiting for you both. Please come back to me safe,” she whispered. I nodded.

“I promise,” I replied, kissing her forehead before leaving the room.

I caught up with Romeo and Liam outside.

“Can we go now?” I asked. Romeo nodded, opening the car door for me.

I smiled, about to get in, when he stopped Liam.

“I don’t want you in my car. You’ll ride with my second-in-command,” Romeo said, gesturing to another car.

Liam started to argue, but I shook my head.

“We can’t waste time arguing,” I said. He stared at me, sighed, and walked away—not to the second-in-command’s car, but to his own.

I got in the car, followed by Romeo.

“Sorry for asking him to leave. I don’t trust him, and I needed to talk to you seriously,” he said, his gaze fixed on the road. I nodded; I didn’t trust Liam either. His presence seemed suspicious.

“I also have a request, but you can go first,” I said. He nodded.

“I got hold of Luca… Apparently, they escaped only because Damon protected them. According to Luca, Damon fought like a beast, killing twenty Lycans, but the minute Sebastian learned where you were and how to break my boundary spell, Damon gave himself up so the others could escape. They’re in hiding now,” he explained. My heart ached. Damon had given himself up because of me. This was my fault.

“Are they okay?” I asked softly. He nodded.

“Not badly injured, mostly because Damon led the fighting. They’re planning a counterattack. They told me to tell you they’re okay and that Damon really doesn’t want you involved,” Romeo said. I frowned.

“He gave himself up because of me. I’m going to fight for him, which brings me to my request,” I said.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Have you heard of the human hunters?” I asked. He nodded.

“They’ve been tracking supernatural beings for years. What about them?”

“The leader is my uncle, and I want to convince him to help. I’ve already asked him to meet me, but you’ll have to take me to the meeting point without the others knowing.”

“Are you insane? He’s a hunter; he could kill you.”

“He won’t. This affects him as much as it affects us. He’ll help, I’m sure,” I said. He sighed.

“I don’t think that’s a smart idea, Clara. What if…”

“I have no other choice, Romeo! I’ll side with anyone who helps me save Damon. We need all the help we can get,” I said. He stared at me, then sighed.

“Where’s the meeting point?” he asked. Relief washed over me.

“I’ll guide you. We need to lose the others first—meaning Liam,” I said. He nodded.

“Leave it to me. Just know that if your uncle tries anything funny, I’ll kill him on the spot. My life’s already on the line for taking you to him.”
