Chapter 242: The Unspoken Compromise
Xavier watched her go, amused. Interesting. +8 Pearls
Though I lacked Fraserโs striking, almost brutal beauty, I still appealedโtall at 190 cm, with a refined handsomeness that cruded effortless charm. For the first time in my life, I had been rejected outright by a beautiful woman, and damn it, it stung. He looked back at the scene, his gaze lingering on Fraser. Weโd known each other for years. But this was the first time Iโd seen the usually unflappable โBossmanโ so completely unraveled. Women really were trouble. Xavier vowed then and there: Iโd never lose myself over one. What a senseless waste.
Summer wasnโt quite sure how she ended up in the passenger seat of Fraserโs Mystery. The car glided along Havenbrookโs riverfront, where neon lights from the opposite bank shimmered like scattered stars against the night sky. Reeds whispered along the banks, their rustling melding with the hum of the city. With the push of a button, Fraser retracted the roof, transforming the sleek vehicle into an open-air spectacle that turned heads. He slumped back in the driverโs seat and fished out a cigarette case. A slim cigarette dangled between his fingers until he abruptly stuffed it back, unlit. He tapped the case absently, his voice deceptively casual. โWhy the abortion?โ
Summer kept her eyes on the hypnotic river lights. โYou should be asking if the baby is even yours.โ Fraserโs gaze dropped to her still-flat belly, his mouth twitching. โIt is.โ Her lips pressed together. โNo. Itโs mine, only mine.โ After a steadying breath, she turned to face him fully. Those dark eyes, deep enough to drown, locked with hers. โFraser,โ she said slowly, โweโre done. A baby changes nothing.โ
His expression hardened. โSo Iโm supposed to pretend this isnโt happening?โ A humorless laugh. โDream on.โ Summer looked away, concentrating on the reeds swaying in the breeze. โThen what? Will you marry me?โ The silence stretched. Then she laughed, bitter but unsurprised. โRelax,โ she said gently. โIโm not trying to trap you. The moment I got off the operating table, I decided to raise this child on my own.โ
When he remained stone-faced, she continued, her eyes pleading. โSomeone like you could have any woman who bore your children.โ The cigarette case hit the dashboard with a clatter. โWhy ask me?โ Fraser bit out, jerking his chin at her stomach. โAsk the child. Apparently, Iโm just a sperm donor here.โ Summer exhaled sharply. โIf you get married someday,โ she said tightly, โI swear the kid wonโt interfere.โ His jaw clenched.
โHow considerate,โ he scoffed. โShall I call a press conference? Let all of Havenbrook know how magnanimous my ex is.โ Summerโs patience snapped. โWhy is this so hard? You know damn well your family would never accept me.โ Her encounters with Helen flashed through her mind. Fraser studied her for a long moment before muttering, โIf marriage is what you wantโฆโ
โNo.โ She cut him off. โNo forced compromises. This babyโฆโ Her voice wavered. โItโs my surprise. Not our fault.โ The Mystery purred to life, merging into Havenbrookโs glittering bloom. The silence thickened between them. Summer turned to the window, watching the blur of neon and trafficโa chaotic mirror of her tangled emotions.
