Chapter 242: The Unspoken Compromise

Xavier watched her go, amused. Interesting. +8 Pearls

Though I lacked Fraserโ€™s striking, almost brutal beauty, I still appealedโ€”tall at 190 cm, with a refined handsomeness that cruded effortless charm. For the first time in my life, I had been rejected outright by a beautiful woman, and damn it, it stung. He looked back at the scene, his gaze lingering on Fraser. Weโ€™d known each other for years. But this was the first time Iโ€™d seen the usually unflappable โ€œBossmanโ€ so completely unraveled. Women really were trouble. Xavier vowed then and there: Iโ€™d never lose myself over one. What a senseless waste.

Summer wasnโ€™t quite sure how she ended up in the passenger seat of Fraserโ€™s Mystery. The car glided along Havenbrookโ€™s riverfront, where neon lights from the opposite bank shimmered like scattered stars against the night sky. Reeds whispered along the banks, their rustling melding with the hum of the city. With the push of a button, Fraser retracted the roof, transforming the sleek vehicle into an open-air spectacle that turned heads. He slumped back in the driverโ€™s seat and fished out a cigarette case. A slim cigarette dangled between his fingers until he abruptly stuffed it back, unlit. He tapped the case absently, his voice deceptively casual. โ€œWhy the abortion?โ€

Summer kept her eyes on the hypnotic river lights. โ€œYou should be asking if the baby is even yours.โ€ Fraserโ€™s gaze dropped to her still-flat belly, his mouth twitching. โ€œIt is.โ€ Her lips pressed together. โ€œNo. Itโ€™s mine, only mine.โ€ After a steadying breath, she turned to face him fully. Those dark eyes, deep enough to drown, locked with hers. โ€œFraser,โ€ she said slowly, โ€œweโ€™re done. A baby changes nothing.โ€

His expression hardened. โ€œSo Iโ€™m supposed to pretend this isnโ€™t happening?โ€ A humorless laugh. โ€œDream on.โ€ Summer looked away, concentrating on the reeds swaying in the breeze. โ€œThen what? Will you marry me?โ€ The silence stretched. Then she laughed, bitter but unsurprised. โ€œRelax,โ€ she said gently. โ€œIโ€™m not trying to trap you. The moment I got off the operating table, I decided to raise this child on my own.โ€

When he remained stone-faced, she continued, her eyes pleading. โ€œSomeone like you could have any woman who bore your children.โ€ The cigarette case hit the dashboard with a clatter. โ€œWhy ask me?โ€ Fraser bit out, jerking his chin at her stomach. โ€œAsk the child. Apparently, Iโ€™m just a sperm donor here.โ€ Summer exhaled sharply. โ€œIf you get married someday,โ€ she said tightly, โ€œI swear the kid wonโ€™t interfere.โ€ His jaw clenched.

โ€œHow considerate,โ€ he scoffed. โ€œShall I call a press conference? Let all of Havenbrook know how magnanimous my ex is.โ€ Summerโ€™s patience snapped. โ€œWhy is this so hard? You know damn well your family would never accept me.โ€ Her encounters with Helen flashed through her mind. Fraser studied her for a long moment before muttering, โ€œIf marriage is what you wantโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo.โ€ She cut him off. โ€œNo forced compromises. This babyโ€ฆโ€ Her voice wavered. โ€œItโ€™s my surprise. Not our fault.โ€ The Mystery purred to life, merging into Havenbrookโ€™s glittering bloom. The silence thickened between them. Summer turned to the window, watching the blur of neon and trafficโ€”a chaotic mirror of her tangled emotions.
