Chapter 245: A Motherโs Plea
Julia held up a delicate clover-shaped brooch. โWhatโs the matter? Look at this brooch. Isnโt it beautiful? The Oblistan tour guide said this four-leaf clover brooch would bring good luck, so I bought it.โ She pinned it on Summerโs blue sweater. The silver accessory stood out beautifully against the casual outfitโa loose knit sweater paired with a flowing blue pleated skirt that made Summer look youthful and relaxed.
โIt suits you,โ Julia nodded in agreement.
After a momentโs hesitation, Summer dropped the bombshell. โIโm pregnant.โ
Julia had been helping Summer try on a necklace. Her hands froze in mid-air, almost dropping the jewelry. โWhat?โ
โI saidโฆ Iโm pregnant,โ Summer repeated clearly.
Finally processing the words, Juliaโs voice rose anxiously. โPregnant? Whose? The Mr. Graham?โ
Summer replied calmly. โNo matter whose it is. Iโve decided to keep it. My belly will grow. I canโt hide it forever.โ
Seeing Summerโs determined expression, Juliaโs face darkened. โWhat does the Graham family think? Now that youโre carrying their child, have they agreed to marry you? Do you know how hard it is to raise a child on your own? Weโre still a family of status; think of the gossip and rumors of high society!โ
The barrage of questions left Summer speechless.
Juliaโs heart sank at her daughterโs silence. The Grahamsโ strict, hierarchical family values are well known. Of course, things arenโt going to be easy.
Summer grabbed her motherโs hands. โMom, my decision is final. Believe in me. I can do this on my own.โ
Julia sighed deeply.
I do believe in Summerโs ability. But the thought of my daughter going through a pregnancy under the judgmental eyes of society is unbearable. No, I have to demand answers!
While Summer was at work, Julia secretly went to the Graham Mansion to confront Helen. Helen heard the butler announce Summerโs motherโs visit; she let her in with cold amusement.
It was the first time Julia had entered the Graham Mansion. Though she came from wealth herself, she was still awed by the imposing grandeur of the place, every detail exuding power and history.
Helen sat regally on the main sofa, eyeing her visitor with disdain. โMrs. Stewart, to what do I owe thisโฆ unexpected visit?โ
Julia perched nervously on the edge of the opposite sofa, acutely aware of the older womanโs hostility. But for the sake of her daughter, she would swallow her prideโthat was the debt she owed Summer.
With a forced smile, Julia said, โMadam Graham, Iโve long admired your reputation. Itโs an honor to meet you today. This jade bracelet is but a small token of my respect.โ She slid an exquisite rosewood box across the table. Inside was an imperial green jade bracelet of flawless clarity, obviously priceless.
Helen accepted a cup of premium tea from a maid, barely glancing at the gift. โLetโs not waste time. State your business.โ
Julia maintained her smile. โMy daughter Summer and your grandson seem to be quite fond of each other. I only hope you will give their relationship your blessing.โ
A mocking snort cut her off. Helen finally looked at her, eyes glittering with malice. โHow clever of you. Your failing department stores arenโt enough, so now you plan to climb higher with your daughter?โ
