Chapter 132

โ€œIโ€™m not going,โ€ Rachel said. She wasnโ€™t exactly a key player anyway. If she showed up, Samantha would probably act like someone had stolen her spotlight. Sheโ€™d get all flustered and dramatic like usual, and turn the whole thing into a scene.

Cecilia nodded. โ€œHonestly, thatโ€™s a good call. Thereโ€™d be less drama. Samantha will definitely be there. Just the sight of her is exhausting. She hardly brings anything to the table. All she does is flirt with Mr. Lewis. I seriously canโ€™t even deal with her.โ€

At that, Cecilia shot a glare toward Samantha, who was sitting a few rows back.

โ€œI barely got you out of trouble last time,โ€ Rachel reminded her. โ€œDonโ€™t stir things up again.โ€

Cecilia stopped immediately.

When Rachel and Cecilia walked into the conference room, they nearly ran into William. His gaze brushed over Rachelโ€™s face for a second before he looked away. His expression went cold.

Rachel quickly looked elsewhere and took her seat.

William glanced around the room. โ€œYouโ€™re all familiar with the issues weโ€™re facing. To smooth over any rumors of tension between us and LS Enterprise, both sides have agreed to a joint team-building event tomorrow.

โ€œI expect everyone to participate.โ€

Rachel raised her hand. โ€œMr. Lewis, Iโ€™ve got something going on tomorrow and wonโ€™t be able to make it. Iโ€™d like to request time off.โ€

Whispers immediately broke out across the room.

โ€œRachelโ€™s skipping?โ€

โ€œDid they have a fight or something?โ€

โ€œIf sheโ€™s not going, thatโ€™s a major snub to Mr. Lewis.โ€

โ€œIf his own wifeโ€™s not going, whatโ€™s the point of the rest of us showing up?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go either. Those events are exhausting.โ€

Williamโ€™s frown deepened. He tapped his knuckles on the table. It was louder than usual. โ€œI just said I want everyone to participate.โ€

Rachel frowned. She still tried to push back. โ€œIsnโ€™t Ms. Juddโ€™s attendance enough?โ€

Samanthaโ€™s voice was soft and shaky as she spoke. โ€œRachel, you know Iโ€™ve been suspended. Did you really have to say it in front of everyone?โ€

Rachel cleared her throat. โ€œSorry. That slipped my mind.โ€

โ€œWell, since sheโ€™s suspendedโ€“โ€

โ€œCecilia!โ€ Rachel cut her off quickly, worried sheโ€™d say something reckless that Samantha could twist to her advantage. She turned to William again. โ€œMr. Lewis, this really isnโ€™t about whoโ€™s filling what role. I just have a personal matter to take care of.โ€

She had no interest in going. It would only bring trouble.

Williamโ€™s eyes darkened. His stare was stern.

Samanthaโ€™s voice remained gentle, and her eyes shimmered with tears like she was barely holding it together. โ€œRachel, if youโ€™re worried about me, Iโ€™ll stay home. Itโ€™s fine. The company should always come first.โ€

She looked like she was ready to martyr herself for the business.

Rachel had no problem with her doing that, but she did have a problem with Samantha dragging her into it every time.

She glared at Samantha.

โ€œI said Iโ€™ve got a personal matter to deal with. Was I not clear enough, or does Ms. Judd have trouble seeing, too?โ€ Rachel signed clearly and slowly.

Rachel was just being direct, but Samanthaโ€™s helpless expression still managed to make Rachel look like the bad person in everyoneโ€™s eyes.

Samantha didnโ€™t argue. Her eyes just turned redder as she murmured, โ€œI understand.โ€

William locked eyes with Rachel before speaking in a cold manner.
