Listen to this chapter:

โ€œShe publicly slandered and showed jealousy toward a new colleague, flouting all corporate protocols. If I let this slide, I lose all authority,โ€ William said, his tone sharp and firm. His usually handsome features seemed even more distant and cold at this moment.

Rachel frowned, realizing he wasnโ€™t going to back down. She took a deep breath. โ€œWhat do you want to do about it, Mr. Lewis?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™ll resign. The company will give her one monthโ€™s salary as compensation,โ€ William said decisively.

Cecilia suddenly realized how serious the situation was. She hadnโ€™t expected that just speaking up for Rachel would lead to being fired.

Rachelโ€™s face went pale. She turned to William, her voice gentle but firm as she protested, โ€œMr. Lewis, it doesnโ€™t have to go that far. Cecilia was just trying to help me.โ€

Williamโ€™s gaze hardened. โ€œCeciliaโ€™s behavior in front of me is your fault. But since youโ€™ve already been punished, weโ€™ll consider it settled. If you ask me to go easy on her again, Iโ€™ll hold you responsible as well.โ€

His warning was clear. If she kept standing up for Cecilia, the consequences would fall on her too.

Rachel couldnโ€™t help but smile bitterly. After seven years, William still didnโ€™t really understand her. She wasnโ€™t the type to abandon her friends. She straightened her back, her voice unwavering as she added, โ€œSince you put it that way, Mr. Lewis, then Ceciliaโ€™s reckless behaviour is partly my responsibility too. Whether you want to fire me or anything else, Iโ€™ll accept it.โ€

At this point, the Oasis Project was already lost to her, and staying at the company didnโ€™t matter anymore.

Just then, Samantha stepped forward, looking guilty. โ€œRachel, Iโ€™m so sorry. I didnโ€™t know you felt that way about my abilities. Iโ€™ve tried my best. You couldโ€™ve just talked to me directly instead of talking to Cecilia behind my back.โ€

As Samantha spoke, she suddenly looked away, embarrassed. Her cheeks turned bright red.

Rachelโ€™s frustration turned into a sarcastic smile.

Cecilia was furious. โ€œI saw all of this with my own eyes. It has nothing to do with Ms. Lloyd!โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ Williamโ€™s voice cut through the room. โ€œThis is a company, not a marketplace. If you want to take it outside. The decision stands. Effective immediately.โ€

Without waiting for anyone to respond, he walked out of the office.

Rachel looked at Samantha, a coldness in her eyes. โ€œTell me, exactly which part of Ceciliaโ€™s accusations was untrue?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ Samantha hesitated, clearly caught off guard by Rachelโ€™s directness. Her ears turned pink with embarrassment.

Rachel turned to Cecilia and said, โ€œCome with me to my office.โ€

Once inside, Cecilia looked at Rachel, regret filling her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t think Mr. Lewis wouldโ€ฆ would take your job away. You two are still married, right? He used to love you so much and nowโ€ฆโ€

Rachel remained calm. โ€œItโ€™s fine. I donโ€™t want to work here anymore. Itโ€™s been exhausting. Hereโ€™s 100,000. Though itโ€™s not much, please give it to the person you asked to help me last time. And let them know Iโ€™m sorry that I got them fired.โ€

Ceciliaโ€™s eyes widened, but Rachel didnโ€™t stop, adding, โ€œAlso, hereโ€™s 50,000 for you. Iโ€™ll try to talk to William and see if heโ€™ll let you stay. If not, Iโ€™ll help you find another job.โ€

Cecilia shook her head vehemently at the proffered card. โ€œNo, I canโ€™t take your money. Besides, Mr. Lewis mightโ€™ve just temporarily believed Samanthaโ€™s nonsense. Donโ€™t be so upset. Why does this feel like youโ€™re saying goodbye forever?โ€

An unspoken sense of finality hung between them, uncomfortably like a farewell.
