Jim quickly stepped forward. โDoctor, howโs my daughter?โ
The doctor let out a long sigh. โSheโs out of danger for now, but sheโs still unconscious. We canโt say when sheโll wake up. She hit her head hard, and it caused intracranial bleeding. If she hadnโt been brought in so quickly, she probably wouldnโt have made it.โ
Jimโs legs buckled just hearing that. He stumbled back two steps, only to be caught by Tyler from behind.
โJim.โ
Jim waved his trembling hand. โIโm fine. As long as sheโs still alive, thatโs all that matters.โ
Standing off to the side, Yvette clenched her fists tightly when she heard Rachel was still alive.
Why was Rachel so lucky? People said that getting hit in the head was fatal, but Rachel was still breathing. Why couldnโt she just die? That wouldโve solved everything.
Compared to everyone else, Tyler remained far calmer.
โDoctor, is there any indication of when she might regain consciousness?โ he asked. โBased on typical cases, that is.โ
The doctor shook his head grimly. โItโs hard to say. In most cases, if they wake up, itโs within twenty-four hours. But if it goes beyond that, then itโs up to fate.โ
Jimโs hands were shaking uncontrollably. โDโDoctor, are you saying that if my daughter doesnโt wake up, she could end up in a coma permanently?โ
โNot necessarily. If she has a strong will to live, she may wake up.โ
Jim nearly lost his footing again. Sasha rushed over to support him.
โJim, donโt worry too much. Rachel has always been blessed. Her momโs watching over her from above. You need to take care of yourself too.โ
With Sashaโs help, Jim sat back down in a chair.
The nurses wheeled Rachel out of the operating room and into a ward, the whole group following.
Cassandra walked up, glanced at Jim and Sasha, and said, โSince everything is settled here, thereโs really no point in so many people crowding around. Iโll head back now.โ
Jim reacted as though he hadnโt heard her.
Sasha, on the other hand, smiled warmly and walked over. โGo ahead, weโve got things handled here. You should go get some rest.โ
Cassandra hesitated, maybe realizing how bad it looked to just walk out, so she found herself a convenient excuse. โExactly, Rachelโs still unconscious. Thereโs not much we can do just sitting here. Better to save our strength. Call me if anything happens.โ
With that, she grabbed her purse and left without looking back.
Once she was gone, Jim pointed in the direction she left and cursed under his breath. โCassandra is unbelievable! Even William left at a time like this! Iโm absolutely furious.โ
Sasha waved and tried to calm him down. โOh, come on. Whatโs the point of being mad now? We were the ones who aimed too high, marrying into the Lewis family. You expect them to treat Rachel like sheโs one of their own?โ
Jim considered that, and he felt less angry.
He shook his head and sighed. โWith Rachel like this, we clearly canโt rely on the Lewis family. Find two caretakers to take shifts looking after her. And donโt tell Gerald about any of this. With his current health, he canโt take another shock.โ
Sasha was irritated by the list of tasks. โYeah, yeah, I got it. Nothing but problems.โ
She got up and moved to one side to arrange for the caretakers.
Jim turned to Tyler. โTyler, Rachelโs no longer in danger now. If you have other things to take care of, go ahead.โ
Tyler didnโt insist on staying. After all, he didnโt have a place in this family. He glanced at Rachel one last time before standing.
โIf anything happens, donโt hesitate to call me,โ he said.
Jim nodded. His impression of Tyler improved even more. โThanks again, Tyler.โ Then he turned to Yvette. โYvette, walk Mr. Hunt out.โ
โSure!โ Yvette replied quickly. She was practically glowing with excitement.
Tyler was about to lift his hand to decline, but Sasha cut him off.
โTyler, consider it a gesture of thanks. If you wonโt let us treat you to a meal, at least let us see you off properly.โ She said it so tactfully, Tyler couldnโt refuse.
โSorry for the trouble, Yvette,โ he said.
Yvette beamed and walked out with him. She trailed beside him with a girlish charm in her voice when she spoke.
โTyler, would it be okay if I dropped by your house tomorrow?โ
โIโve got work tomorrow,โ Tyler replied indifferently while quickening his pace.
Yvette hurried to keep up.
โTyler, wonโt you wait up?โ she called out sweetly.
He suddenly stopped and turned slightly to give her a cold glance.
โYvette, this is far enough.โ
Yvette wasnโt about to let the opportunity slip by. She immediately came up with an excuse. โI was about to head home too. Could you give me a ride?โ
Tylerโs eyes narrowed. The coldness in his tone sent chills down her spine.
โIโm not headed in your direction.โ
After being turned down over and over, Yvette was starting to feel defeated. But she reminded herself that if she could just marry Tyler, her life would completely change. Sheโd finally be free of Rachelโs shadow forever.
So she put on her sweetest voice and grabbed the hem of his coat before giving it a playful tug.
โTyler, even if you donโt want me to visit, you can at least give me a ride, right? Weโre not strangers anymore. If you just gave me a chance, youโd see all the good things about me.โ
Tyler looked her up and down. โIโm not interested,โ he said flatly.
Yvette froze, and her smile vanished. She couldnโt even fake it anymore. โWhat do you mean by that?โ
