As soon as Samantha heard the creak of the door opening, her heart started to pound. Her gaze was fixated on the door.
The nurse who had come to change the IV drip paused at the sight of the two of them staring oddly at her.
โIs there something I can help you with?โ she asked.
Williamโs hopeful gaze dimmed instantly.
Samantha, on the other hand, looked as if sheโd just been granted reprieve. She felt relieved Rachel wasnโt there.
William stepped forward as he asked, โCould I trouble you to tell me whoโs been caring for Mr. Lloyd the past couple of days?โ
โHis daughter, of course,โ the nurse replied.
William pulled up a photo of Rachel on his phone and showed it to her. โWas it this person?โ
The nurse studied it for a moment, seemingly trying to recall, then shook her head. โNo, thatโs not her.โ
Samantha watched Williamโs urgency with a heavy heart. Her usual innocent-looking eyes were now bloodshot with jealousy and bitterness. If she had known William still cared this much about Rachel, she never should have said anything in the first place.
She took a deep breath, walked to Williamโs side, and said softly, โWilliam, I told you. I mustโve been mistaken. Let it go. We donโt have a good relationship with the Lloyd family right now anyway. We should leave before things get awkward.โ
William followed her out of the room.
Once they left, the nurse changed Jimโs IV drip, and only then did Rachel open the door and come in.
The nurse turned and saw her. โMs. Lloyd, I already sent those two away for you.โ
Rachel handed her an envelope. โThank you for the trouble.โ
The nurse took it with a smile. โIt was only a small favor. If thereโs nothing else, Iโll be going now.โ
โIโll have to rely on you to look after my dad. I may be busy with other things the next few days and canโt be here around the clock.โ
The nurse beamed, feeling the weight of the envelope. โOf course. Thank you.โ
Rachel closed the door as the nurse left. Her expression, which had remained calm just moments ago, turned cold in an instant.
In truth, she had seen Samantha even before Samantha saw her. It wasnโt that she wanted to hide, but rather, now wasnโt the time for a reunion.
She wanted Samantha to think sheโd caught a glimpse of her. She wanted to let them wonder and suffer from the uncertainty.
Rachel wanted to be someone they thought had long since died, but now suddenly lingered like a vengeful ghost. Wouldnโt that gnaw at them far more than a confrontation?
โRโRachel-โ Jimโs weak voice pulled Rachel back from her thoughts.
She turned to him and brought a cup to his lips.
โDad, have some water.โ
Jim struggled to take a few sips. He then reached for Rachelโs hand.
โDid you get the documents?โ
โI did. Theyโre all right here.โ
Rachel handed everything over to him.
Jim gave her a will. โThis is for you, and this is the deed to a house Iโve left in your name. Also, donโt open this letter unless you have absolutely no other choice.โ
Rachel wasnโt attached to the Lloyd familyโs wealth, but the letter piqued her curiosity. โDad, whatโs in the letter?โ
โJust promise me, donโt open it unless you absolutely must. Keep it safe. Rachel, Iโve wronged you. I let you suffer so much over the years. But Iโm just glad that youโre still alive. Youโre aโโ Jim suddenly choked on his words.
Rachel had never blamed him.
Even when he brought Yvette into their home, when the entire Lloyd family had turned their backs on her, and even when Gerald had kicked her out, Jim had always treated her kindly.
She knew she wasnโt his biological daughter, and for him to do this much was already more than enough. She had never expected more.
She gently patted his chest, afraid his emotions might get the better of him and cause him difficulty breathing.
โAlright, Dad. Youโre not fully to blame. Youโve already done more than enough for me. You donโt need to carry any guilt. Right now, donโt think about anything else. Just focus on getting better.โ
Jim clutched her hand tightly, trembling as he tried to speak.
