Her Exit 343

Listen to this chapter:

As soon as Samantha heard the creak of the door opening, her heart started to pound. Her gaze was fixated on the door.

The nurse who had come to change the IV drip paused at the sight of the two of them staring oddly at her.

โ€œIs there something I can help you with?โ€ she asked.

Williamโ€™s hopeful gaze dimmed instantly.

Samantha, on the other hand, looked as if sheโ€™d just been granted reprieve. She felt relieved Rachel wasnโ€™t there.

William stepped forward as he asked, โ€œCould I trouble you to tell me whoโ€™s been caring for Mr. Lloyd the past couple of days?โ€

โ€œHis daughter, of course,โ€ the nurse replied.

William pulled up a photo of Rachel on his phone and showed it to her. โ€œWas it this person?โ€

The nurse studied it for a moment, seemingly trying to recall, then shook her head. โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not her.โ€

Samantha watched Williamโ€™s urgency with a heavy heart. Her usual innocent-looking eyes were now bloodshot with jealousy and bitterness. If she had known William still cared this much about Rachel, she never should have said anything in the first place.

She took a deep breath, walked to Williamโ€™s side, and said softly, โ€œWilliam, I told you. I mustโ€™ve been mistaken. Let it go. We donโ€™t have a good relationship with the Lloyd family right now anyway. We should leave before things get awkward.โ€

William followed her out of the room.

Once they left, the nurse changed Jimโ€™s IV drip, and only then did Rachel open the door and come in.

The nurse turned and saw her. โ€œMs. Lloyd, I already sent those two away for you.โ€

Rachel handed her an envelope. โ€œThank you for the trouble.โ€

The nurse took it with a smile. โ€œIt was only a small favor. If thereโ€™s nothing else, Iโ€™ll be going now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll have to rely on you to look after my dad. I may be busy with other things the next few days and canโ€™t be here around the clock.โ€

The nurse beamed, feeling the weight of the envelope. โ€œOf course. Thank you.โ€

Rachel closed the door as the nurse left. Her expression, which had remained calm just moments ago, turned cold in an instant.

In truth, she had seen Samantha even before Samantha saw her. It wasnโ€™t that she wanted to hide, but rather, now wasnโ€™t the time for a reunion.

She wanted Samantha to think sheโ€™d caught a glimpse of her. She wanted to let them wonder and suffer from the uncertainty.

Rachel wanted to be someone they thought had long since died, but now suddenly lingered like a vengeful ghost. Wouldnโ€™t that gnaw at them far more than a confrontation?

โ€œRโ€“Rachel-โ€ Jimโ€™s weak voice pulled Rachel back from her thoughts.

She turned to him and brought a cup to his lips.

โ€œDad, have some water.โ€

Jim struggled to take a few sips. He then reached for Rachelโ€™s hand.

โ€œDid you get the documents?โ€

โ€œI did. Theyโ€™re all right here.โ€

Rachel handed everything over to him.

Jim gave her a will. โ€œThis is for you, and this is the deed to a house Iโ€™ve left in your name. Also, donโ€™t open this letter unless you have absolutely no other choice.โ€

Rachel wasnโ€™t attached to the Lloyd familyโ€™s wealth, but the letter piqued her curiosity. โ€œDad, whatโ€™s in the letter?โ€

โ€œJust promise me, donโ€™t open it unless you absolutely must. Keep it safe. Rachel, Iโ€™ve wronged you. I let you suffer so much over the years. But Iโ€™m just glad that youโ€™re still alive. Youโ€™re aโ€”โ€œ Jim suddenly choked on his words.

Rachel had never blamed him.

Even when he brought Yvette into their home, when the entire Lloyd family had turned their backs on her, and even when Gerald had kicked her out, Jim had always treated her kindly.

She knew she wasnโ€™t his biological daughter, and for him to do this much was already more than enough. She had never expected more.

She gently patted his chest, afraid his emotions might get the better of him and cause him difficulty breathing.

โ€œAlright, Dad. Youโ€™re not fully to blame. Youโ€™ve already done more than enough for me. You donโ€™t need to carry any guilt. Right now, donโ€™t think about anything else. Just focus on getting better.โ€

Jim clutched her hand tightly, trembling as he tried to speak.
