Sasha was yelling through sobs. "Oh, Jim...! Why did you leave in such a rush...?"
She was wearing a brand-new black dress, the brooch at her collar glinting coldly in the evening light. She looked less like she was mourning and more like she had intentionally dressed herself up.
Rachel clenched her fists so hard, her nails dug into the flesh of her palms. How dare Sasha come to Jim's funeral to put on such a pretentious act? Was she still not giving up?
Rachel approached Sasha and asked unceremoniously, "Shall I call for security, or are you going to walk out by yourself?"
Sasha slowly turned around and pulled out a napkin from her bag. "Rachel, you canโt be this heartless! Your brother and I donโt have a roof over our heads anymore. We lead our lives exposed to the harsh elements outside. Now that your dad is gone, you should at least give us a portion of the Lloyd family inheritance. This is your dadโs medical report," Sasha said, passing Rachel a document.
It was a report from the cityโs mental health institute, with the words โtendency for paranoid personality disorderโ circled in red.
Rachelโs uncle inhaled sharply. โJim wasโฆโ
โDonโt listen to her nonsense!โ Rachel warned. โShe found herself a fake doctor to do a check on Dad just to get her hands on the family inheritance. My dad lay on the bed, unable to make decisions for himself.โ
โOh, Rachel! You have such a poor memory!โ Sasha anxiously explained. โI looked for a doctor to conduct a psychiatric assessment for your dad, and he diagnosed your dad as having a mental condition. In that case, your dadโs rewritten will is not legitimate. The distribution of his assets must be reconsidered.โ
Rachel glared icily at Sasha. โDid you forget? The doctor made special emphasis back then, stating that it was just a stress response. It wasnโt an acceptable medical diagnosis.โ
Sashaโs face paled. However, she quickly recovered and started to argue. โBut his medical records serve as proof! He was mentally unstable when he wrote that will, and thus it is illegitimate in the eyes of the law!โ She tilted her head, insisting, โWe were once husband and wife. It makes no sense that the house and money all go to a brat like you!โ
Rachel suddenly laughed, but the smile didnโt reach her eyes. She walked to a table and opened the bottom-most drawer. Aside from the blood pressure medication Jim usually took, there was a metal tin box with a thin layer of dust on it.
When she poured out its contents, Sashaโs face paled even further. It was a thick pile of medical records, the latest one dated last month. The doctorโs signature was appended right there, every page indicating that the patient was โmentally clear and cognitively normal.โ
โDad was worried that youโd have your eyes on the inheritance and made a special effort to go for a psychiatric assessment every month.โ Rachel pulled out a document and showed it to everyone around her. โThere are even video archives of the will signing in the Public Notary Office. Two officers were present the day the will was signed, proving that Dad was as clear-minded as he could be.โ
She paused for a while before continuing in a higher pitch. โBut you, Sasha Dawsonโฆ You, on the other hand, stole two calligraphy paintings from his study. Theyโre still hanging in your brotherโs living room, right? Should we go there and take a look right now?โ
Sashaโs lips trembled, her shoulders shaking in fright. She had never expected Rachel to have all these ready despite being busy with so many things. All the complaints and cries she had prepared beforehand were stuck in her throat.
Rachelโs uncle pointed a finger at Sasha and yelled furiously, โMy dad was blind to have married you back then!โ
