Chapter 145: The Deal Ended
Amber’s eyes remained fixed on Dominic, intently studying his expression. A flicker of satisfaction crossed her face as she saw his features darken.
“If she was only sleeping with you,” she said, “would she even need birth control pills? A woman like her isn’t worth wasting your life on. I can give you everything she never can. I’m generous. I won’t hold your past with her against you. After all, any successful man is bound to attract a few flies, right?”
Dominic responded coldly, “Are you done?”
Amber, frustrated by his dismissive attitude, continued, “What? I’m saying this for your own good! I’ve never seen anything special about Bella. If it’s because I confronted her at the hospital and that annoyed you, I apologize! I won’t bother her again. But think about it—both our families are in business. You know how beneficial a marriage between us could be. You should seriously consider it.”
Dominic laughed disdainfully. “You’re right. Our families are in business, and a marriage alliance would make sense. But I’m not interested in going with the flow; I prefer to go against it. Life isn’t just about money and power for me. Doing what I want has more meaning. And let’s be real—you’re pushing for this marriage because you’re in love with me. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t care about this arrangement. Why lie to yourself?”
Amber was momentarily speechless. He wasn’t wrong. If she didn’t genuinely like him, she wouldn’t have cared about this alliance. She wouldn't have pursued a marriage with someone she didn't know or love for the sake of her family. The alliance was nothing more than a convenient excuse—her only reason for trying to persuade him.
Not wanting to lose her dignity, Amber chose to end the conversation. Maintaining her composure, she stood.
“I just came to let you know that, as an investor in Miller Group’s first overseas branch, my father will be visiting Jovelle in the next few days. He’ll be stopping by your house, so be prepared. Don’t let some small thing annoy him. Let’s not forget that when you were struggling abroad for those three years, it was my father who helped you out.”
She continued, “What I want isn’t a temporary boyfriend of two years. I want you to marry me.”
With that, Amber left, maintaining her usual air of pride. Even though she felt humiliated before the man she loved, she clung to her remaining dignity.
Dominic, thoroughly disgusted by the implied threat, responded coldly, “Was it just a deal? We agreed on the terms. Those two years were just a deal. The moment I returned, the deal ended. If you want to back out of the investment, go ahead. I couldn’t care less.”
Amber paused, her eyes reddening, brimming with unshed tears. However, she didn’t look back. She needed to leave before losing control.
That night, Bella drove back to Miller Manor. As soon as she stepped through the front door, Sylvia stopped her.
“Ms. Jones, Ms. Yates came by earlier. She said something to Mr. Miller, and he’s been in an awful mood ever since. He didn’t even go to the office this afternoon and has just been sitting in the living room. Be careful. I think he’s upset with you…”
Bella’s heart skipped a beat. Could Amber have told Dominic about the birth control pills? She had been careful to prevent the matter from leaking, but she hadn’t anticipated Amber’s betrayal. It made sense, though. Amber probably assumed Bella was cheating, so this reaction was expected.
