Chapter 165: Afraid I'll Do Something to You?
The private nurse replied, "Gunshot wound."
This kind of violence was foreign and frightening to Bella. She had first encountered such violence after meeting Leonard. For twenty-five years, she had lived in a peaceful, orderly world. She couldn't imagine what Dominic had endured before returning.
Stepping out of the basement and feeling the cool air, she calmed down slightly. Only after speaking with the Sawyer family did she understand the full story.
Apparently, Miller Group's overseas company was well-established and no longer needed the Yates family's support. Ideally, they would continue to profit peacefully, but the Yates family had other plans. They tried to force Dominic into marrying Amber to solidify their connection with Miller Group.
Dominic went on the trip with the Yates family because of their subtle threats, and also because he wanted to sever ties completely. He couldn't simply demand they withdraw their investment; he aimed for a clean break to avoid further entanglement.
However, the Yates family had darker intentions. They introduced Dominic to a local mob they secretly worked with, hoping to implicate him. The meeting went poorly. Dominic refused their demands, infuriating the mob boss. Tensions escalated; both men drew guns. The mob boss was killed, and Dominic was critically injured.
In the ensuing chaos, Amber helped Dominic escape, bringing him to his pre-arranged contacts. They fled through the night, returning to their country just in time. Amber's actions fractured the alliance between the Yates family and the criminals.
Now, the mob believed the Yates family had orchestrated the murder. Seeking revenge for their fallen boss, they were making life difficult for the Yates family.
After hearing this, Bella hoarsely asked, "What about Amber? Did she return with Dominic?"
Daniel shook his head. "I'm not sure, but probably not. Dominic had arranged a private plane. When we arrived, only his people were on board—no outsiders. The Yates family is too preoccupied with the mob to worry about anything else. Things aren't as peaceful abroad as they are here."
Bella had always disliked Amber, but she couldn't deny that Amber had saved Dominic. Now, the Yates family was in serious trouble because of it. She didn't fully grasp how dangerous these criminals were, but she knew that if Amber fell into their hands, it wouldn't end well.
Still, that was beyond Bella's control. She only cared about Dominic's recovery.
With Dominic resting at Sawyer Manor, life seemed to return to normal. The Yates family was too preoccupied to bother Bella, so she moved back to Miller Manor. Dominic would remain at Sawyer Manor for treatment. The Sawyer family had dedicated medical staff, and Ian was practically their private doctor.
The day after Bella returned to Miller Manor, she received a call from an unknown number—it was Amber. Amber asked to meet, offering little explanation before giving Bella an address and hanging up.
Bella felt relieved that Amber had returned safely and wasn't in immediate danger, but she still didn't trust her completely. When she went to meet Amber, Bella brought two bodyguards. For the first time, she realized bodyguards weren't just for show; they made her feel secure. Amber had chosen a high-end apartment building.
Bella was surprised by Amber's appearance. The once-arrogant woman looked worn down, her face devoid of makeup, appearing plain and exhausted. The apartment was empty except for Amber, curled up on the couch.
Noticing Bella's bodyguards, Amber gave a bitter smile. "I'm in this state, and you're still afraid I might try something?"
