Listen to this chapter:

Too much had happened that night for Bella to process, so she continued drinking, drowning her sorrows in alcohol. Lia wanted to join her, but Bella stopped her. "You shouldn't. If your heart condition flares up, I'll be too drunk to help you."

Lia chuckled. "With a doctor by my side, what's to worry about? My heart's not that fragile. Besides, you became a cardiologist because of me. I owe you a drink for that."

Bella had become a cardiologist because of Lia's congenital heart condition. Lia was her only friend, and Bella, having experienced loss before, feared loneliness more than anything.

By midnight, Bella was so drunk her consciousness blurred. For someone who rarely drank, the night had been exceedingly wild.

"I'll take you home…" Lia slurred, clinging to a shred of sobriety.

Bella fumbled with her phone, mumbling, "I don't want you to… I'm calling Dominic…"

Lia laughed. "No offense, but you're hopeless. Even drunk, you're still thinking about him. Fine, call him. Let him pick you up."

Bella squinted at her phone, struggling to read the screen. After several attempts, she finally managed to make a call. When the line connected, she mumbled, "Dominic, where are you? Come pick me up… I'm at Zero Bar… I can't go home…"

On the other end, Felix frowned, getting out of bed and dressing. "Stay there. I'm coming to get you."

She had clearly dialed the wrong number, but Felix couldn't leave her. His college confession to her hadn't been a joke. Arriving at the bar, he found two women slumped in a corner booth, both intoxicated.

He approached them gently. "Bella, I'm here. Let's get you home."

Lia looked up blearily. "Why are you here, Felix? Didn't she call Dominic?"

Felix paused. "She called the wrong number."

Too drunk to argue, Lia trusted Felix. She knew from Bella that he was a good person. "Alright, take her home. I'll manage." She added a half-hearted warning, "Don't try anything!"

Felix nodded, noting her remaining awareness. "Be careful. Text Bella when you're safe. I'll keep an eye on her." After helping both women outside, he ensured Lia got a cab, giving the driver clear instructions before letting her go.

Bella leaned heavily on him. He hadn't expected this would be their closest moment after all these years. A gentleman, he wouldn't take advantage. "Bella, I'll take you back to Miller Manor."

Bella, not recognizing his voice, mumbled incoherently, "I don't want to go back… Don't take me back… He doesn't like seeing me… He'll be angry…"

Drunk, she'd forgotten Dominic wasn't home. Her words reflected a deeply ingrained fear, second nature to her. Felix frowned. The woman he'd longed for had become cautious and timid with Dominic.

Whether from selfishness or something else, Felix decided to take Bella to his place.
