Chapter 44: It Sure Is Nice to Be Rich
"It sure is nice to be rich," Bella thought.
Over the years she had lived at Miller Manor. Richard had treated her well, but she and Felix had gone about their lives and never tried to learn about the Millers. Therefore, she only had a vague idea of how wealthy Emily Miller was. Their wealth appeared to be beyond her imagination. Dominic said he'd rest for ten minutes, and he meant it. As soon as the time was up, he seemed like a completely different person, teasing with a relaxed and refreshed air. Bella breathed a sigh of relief. Now that he was okay, she could finally relax in her own personal space. She had kept tabs on what was being said online about her and Felix. Felix had done a good job of cleaning things up, and by the time she left, there was almost nothing left on the internet.
It wasn't the public scrutiny that bothered her, but the fact that Dominic didn't trust her. She could still feel the chill of that night as she waited for him outside the hotel. However, that didn't matter anymore. That incident was merely the catalyst that pushed her to leave. If it hadn't been for that, she wouldn't have had the resolve to leave.
Dominic hadn't returned when Bella fell asleep. When she woke up the next morning, he was still gone. Despite being under the same roof, their schedules were so different that they hardly crossed paths.
He silently washed and hung up his clothes, debriefed, and left a note before heading to the hospital.
The world at the Holha hospital was significantly busier than it was at the private hospital. After all, the latter was a hospital in a small town, so it was naturally much more relaxed.
Since there was no opening in the cardiac department, she was assigned to the emergency department, where her work hours often extended well beyond the normal shift.
She had barely settled into her chair when the hospital doors burst open outside. Everyone around her started bustling and anxiously whispering, which usually meant that a patient had just been brought in.
Bella deftly buttoned up her white coat and hurried outside. Her eyes widened in surprise when she was met with a group of men in black suits and sunglasses. To her astonishment, Leonard was loading the group into an ambulance. Hence, the patient was a member of the prestigious Sawyer family. The nurses who wheeled the patient in could help but feel a knot in their stomachs. They were all on edge, worried that they'd make a mistake and anger the family. Bernard followed them to the emergency room door. He was far calmer than he used to be in the small town.
If it weren't for his face, Bella wouldn't have believed he was Leonard. She was aware this wasn't the time to let her mind wander, so she followed the nurse into the emergency room.
"Family members need to wait outside," she said as she walked past Leonard.
"That's my father. He's been through enough. If he doesn't make it…" he choked back a sob. Bella was about to close the door when he added loudly, as if he wanted everyone to hear him, "I will do everything I can to save him."
As soon as the door closed, the man on the bed, Daniel Sawyer, jerked himself upright and yelled, "You left! Can't wait for me to die, can you? Then there would be no one left to keep you in line!" Bella felt her head about to explode. "Please calm down, sir. I'm here to help you."
Daniel only struggled that one time. Then, he was mostly unconscious. What puzzled Bella the most was how Dominic and Leonard looked so different; they bore no resemblance to each other at all.
