Chapter 78: No Intention of Getting Married
After hesitating, Bella decided against asking him directly. Curiosity warred with a lack of courage.
Their conversations were infrequent and shallow. Bella knew nothing of Dominic's business, and Dominic showed no interest in her surgical work. They seemed fated to be together, two people from entirely different worlds; a rocky start rarely resulting in a perfect ending.
"Why did you decide to become a doctor?" Dominic asked, swirling his wine and tapping his fingers. It was the first time he'd shown any interest in her life.
Bella paused. "My mother became ill and couldn't get timely treatment. I decided then that I wanted to help others avoid that kind of pain." Her voice faltered, and Dominic's expression darkened. A deep sense of regret washed over her. She realized, with a jolt, that her adored mother was, to Dominic, a homewrecker. And she, her daughter, was a mistake. How could she have mentioned her mother so casually?
Their conversation ended abruptly. He took a sip of wine, his expression dark and ambiguous. The atmosphere grew tense. Setting down her glass, Bella said, "It's late. You should rest. I'm going to bed."
Dominic suddenly said, "You're not allowed to leave without my permission." Bella was surprised; it had been a long time since she'd left. "Alright," she replied hesitantly. Then, she added, "When you get married, I can leave, right? I hope that day comes soon. It would be a relief for both of us. I won't forget what I've done, but you don't need to atone for it with me. I hope you can let go of the past."
Dominic laughed. "Is that what you think? You might be disappointed. I have no plans to marry."
Bella was astonished. With his qualifications, he only needed a partner. Why keep her? She hadn't wanted to leave for her own sake; she wanted him to be free. His attitude left her drained. After nearly twenty years, she was the weary one.
She turned to leave. A strong hand yanked her against the wall. Dominic leaned in, his hand around her neck, his breath close to her face. Fear flickered in Bella's eyes. Her rapid breathing parted her lips, the blush from the wine adding a touch of allure. They stared at each other. Bella couldn't understand the intense anger on his face.
