Chapter 43: Ophelia: I Could Cure Your Illness
โHowever, Elva didnโt stay here; she moved to the annex,โ Glenda stated.
Elvaโs smile froze. Sunset Vista was vast, with a neighboring annex, but that was specifically for the servants. She had been different, allowed to live in the main house, highlighting her status. The other servants had flattered her. If she moved, how would they view her?
โMadam Pruittโฆ!โ Elva felt wronged, close to tears.
Glenda gently asked Ophelia, โOphelia, what do you think?โ Ophelia knew Glenda had little contact with her and likely little fondness; it was probably only because of Winford that she was treated so well. Not wanting to upset her grandmother, she said, โGrandma, I have no objections.โ
Being kicked out and moved to the annex would similarly impact Elva, and the sight of Elvaโs expression brought Ophelia great joy.
Glenda, satisfied, nodded. โElva, did you hear that? Ophelia is generous and willing to let you stay. Thank her and pack your things to move over.โ
Elva almost spat blood. She still had to thank Ophelia?!
Ophelia smiled, truly waiting for Elva to speak. Elva felt extremely frustrated, but under Glendaโs gaze, she humbly said, โโฆThank you for your generosity, madam.โ
Ophelia nodded. โHmm. Go ahead.โ
Elva was forcibly pulled back to her room by her mother, tears streaming. โMom, I donโt want to move to the annex! Thatโs where the servants live; how can I live there!โ
The more Ophelia thought about it, the more she felt something was off. Opheliaโs preparations seemed a bit too thorough. โOphelia, she did it on purpose; she deliberately set a trap for me! She already knew I was going to steal something!โ
The key to the drawer had been secretly copied. How could Ophelia be so careless? Since the drawer was locked, its contents were clearly important. So how could she carelessly leave the key around, giving Elva the opportunity? Looking back, the other party was clearly acting intentionally! But now she realized it was all useless.
Bertha, seeing her daughterโs misery, felt heartbroken and deeply hated Ophelia.
After resolving the matter with Bertha and Elva, Glenda didnโt leave immediately. She asked Ophelia, โI heard Bertha say that you and Winford went to get your marriage license?โ
Ophelia felt embarrassed. โIโฆโ
Glenda smiled, holding Opheliaโs hand. โCirent, great! I thought Winford would wait until he could walk before going, but I didnโt expect he couldnโt wait that long!โ Glenda didnโt dislike Ophelia, and at that moment, looking at the girl, she felt increasingly satisfied. Winfordโs eagerness to obtain the marriage certificate showed this girl was truly special to him.
โI have a good life with Winford, and it would be great if you could give me a little great-grandson sometime,โ Glenda said eagerly, her gaze subtly sweeping over Opheliaโs belly.
Opheliaโs cheeks flushed, her gaze wandering, unsure how to respond. Just as it became awkward, Winford came down. He greeted Glenda, noticing her flushed face. He paused. โAre you feeling unwell?โ
โโฆthere wasnโtโฆโ she stammered. Under his gaze, her face burned even more.
Glenda saw her grandson cared about his wife and smiled. โI was talking to Ophelia about the child, Winford, you are not a child anymore.โ
Most importantly, he said he couldnโt predict the exact dateโฆ Cilenda was really worried and wished he would just have a child right away.
That way, when he left, she would at least have something to hold onto, making it less painful.
Winford glanced at Ophelia, who was shy. She had been quite proactive before, but now she lowered her head, not daring to look at him. He slightly lowered his eyes and said calmly, โGrandma, Lia was still young.โ
Glenda was a bit disappointed. โโฆso it was.โ She was only nineteen; having a baby was a bit too early. But how much time did her grandson have left? Glenda felt a pang in her heart but didn't voice her concerns.
Ophelia noticed Glendaโs expression and hesitated. After Glenda left, she said to Winford, โI could actually cure your illness; I wouldnโt let you die!โ
Winford was taken aback. He paused, gently ruffled her hair, and said nothing. Ophelia noticed his disbelief, so she hurriedly held his hand. โWhat I said is true; I just donโt have the medicine right now!โ
She spoke with great conviction, but she couldnโt persuade anyone. Everyone knew her mother, Harriet, was a miraculous doctor, but they also knew Ophelia was a mediocre student who had gotten lucky to be admitted to Ventura University. Before that, she had no reputation for medical knowledge.
At that moment, she suddenly thought, โSo many renowned doctors were at a loss with Winfordโs illness, and she could actually cure it? Who would believe that!โ
Even Graham, after interacting with her, felt his wife wasn't as useless as rumors suggested, but he still didn't believe her. Helplessly, she thought, she'd gone to great lengths to cheer up Mr. Winford: she had even exaggerated to the point of saying that the cows had flown to the sky!
โDid you study medicine?โ Winford asked.
Realizing he was avoiding the question, the anger deflating in Ophelia left her feeling utterly defeated. He didnโt believe her at all! It was something no one would believe, no matter who it was. She had considered this all along, which is why she hadnโt said anything, thinking she would bring it up once the crucial medicine appeared from her motherโs Sapphire Botanical Institute. Forget it; in the future, she would show him her true abilities to make him believe her!
Before going to bed, Ophelia remembered the spare phone. Her eyes dimmed as she checked it. Cullen sent over a dozen messages, but she didnโt bother to read them, simply deleting and blocking his number.
Thinking of Cullen, she recalled how, in her past life, young and naive, she had been deceived by him. She had foolishly devoted her heart to him and given him many gifts! Even scumbags received gifts, so how could her husband not have the gifts she gave him? She thought about it and decided to act. The next day, she got everything ready and took Lily out.
Lily was the honest maid who bravely exposed Elva yesterday, and Ophelia even helped her apply for a two-month bonus from Winford. Winford saw her and asked, โWhere are you going?โ
Ophelia mumbled, โI went shopping to buy a few pieces of clothing!โ The gift was, of course, meant to be a surprise, so it couldnโt be revealed beforehand! She originally lacked clothes, and this reason was indeed perfect! She didnโt know that while she secretly thought she was clever, Winford had already seen through her lies. He said nothing, simply handing her a card. โBuy whatever you want yourself.โ
Ophelia was taken aback; she recognized it as his supplementary card, which had no limit. He had given it to her in her previous life as well, but she had never used it. โThank you, husband!โ
Ophelia happily accepted it. From then on, she also became someone with a husband giving her pocket money! โOf course, buying gifts for my husband still had to be done with my own money!โ
Watching her leave, Winfordโs expression was indifferent as he turned and went upstairs.
Ophelia was in a menโs accessories store, struggling with what to buy. -Tie? Tie clip? Belt? Or watch? Suddenly, she noticed a cufflink; her eyes brightened, and she was about to step forward.
โOphelia! Is that you?โ A surprised voice called out.
Ophelia turned, her eyes instantly narrowing. Gianna Conrad, Bessieโs cousin, had brought several people with her. When she saw Ophelia, disdain flashed in her eyes, and she immediately approached with her group.
