Upon hearing Wanda’s suggestion, Natalie tightened her grip on the dried fish.

“Absolutely not. When Mrs. Locke Senior handed Vera to me, she said that Vera doesn’t need to be wealthy or successful. All Mrs. Locke Senior wanted was for Vera to be safe,”

“But the problem is she’s not safe now!” Wanda’s eyes turned red. “I can’t bear to see her this way. Vera’s my everything – We raised her to be well-educated and—”

On the second floor, Vespera noticed that Wanda and Natalie, who had been drying fish earlier, suddenly got into a disagreement. Wanda’s eyes had turned red, and Natalie looked rather stern.

Vespera headed downstairs. She walked in between them before linking her arms with each of them. “You should try my cooking for lunch later. A man taught me how to make a good stock recently.”

“Sure. We’ll try your cooking.” Wanda cupped Vespera’s cheeks gently.

Natalie pinched Vespera’s nose with a smile. “You’re becoming greedy, always causing a storm. Be careful – you might get chubby.”

“Chubby sounds good! I’ll be fat and cute. I can just live off being cute and never leave your house.”

“Haven’t you done that enough? When you were still a child, your parents had to pacify you for a long time before you were willing to leave my home. You even insisted on bringing Snowy and Goldie home.”

Natalie started telling stories from Vespera’s childhood days. Some Vespera remembered well, others felt hazy. Snowy was a white cat with pointy ears, while Goldie was a short-legged golden dog.

Maurice had brought Snowy and Goldie to the village to accompany Vespera for fun. Later, when Vespera started elementary school in the city, Wanda and Vemen forbade her from bringing Snowy and Goldie along. She could only see the pets over the holidays.

Every time Vespera arrived or left, Snowy and Goldie would sit on the wooden platform by the door. Much later on, Vespera arrived to find them gone. After learning that they had passed away, she cried for a long time.

Maurice solemnly said that dogs and cats only lived for about ten years. Since both were dead, Vespera could have just another two pets.

But Vespera refused to raise pets again. She was afraid that she would be sad over losing them again, so she opposed the idea. She had been afraid of losing Snowy and Goldie. The same went for Luke.

By noon, Vespera finished preparing a feast for lunch. Vernon and Maurice had returned from the sea with a good haul of seafood.

Lunch was almost over when Vespera brought up her divorce to Wanda, Vernon, Natalie, and Maurice.

“I’m filing for a divorce. If nothing else comes up, I’ll be sorting out the paperwork when I’m ready. I asked for a divorce because I didn’t want this to go on.”

“Please don’t think of me as a victim. A marriage takes two to tango, and I was willing to marry him back then.”

“Now, I’m also content with getting a divorce. Don’t worry about me being bullied; I won’t let others do that to me because I’ll definitely fight back,” Vespera said lightly, sounding rather confident.

Vernon, Wanda, Natalie, and Maurice went along with her announcement, saying that they would support whatever decision she made as long as she was happy. The four seemed to have reached an agreement. They acted as if they weren’t aware of anything and trusted Vespera completely.
