Chapter 116

Vespera remained composed as she continued lying down on the car seat. After ending the call, the man returned to his car, which was parked diagonally across from her. He got into the car before opening a can of drink to enjoy. Nothing seemed amiss about the man; perhaps it was just a coincidence. The man may have left Hallewick at midnight three days ago and planned to return at the same time Vespera did. But she did not believe in such coincidences.

Half an hour later, Vespera did not drive away. The man did not leave either. Vespera became certain that the man had been tailing her. But who gave him the orders? Could the Sowle family have sent him to murder her? But if that was true, he hadn’t made a move for the past three days. Vespera was filled with countless doubts but couldn’t be sure whether she was right. She was contemplating whether she should make a police report. But it would take time for the police to arrive. Most importantly, Vespera and the man were on the same route back to Halewick. There was no concrete evidence, and she was merely suspicious of him. The man could always act innocent.

Vespera was only one hour away from Halewick. The man had followed her for so many days without making a move. If she acted normal and drove back to the city without letting on, the man might not do anything. Having made up her mind, she drove away. The man drove off not long after and didn’t follow Vespera too closely. Sometimes, there was no sign of him, and he would show up again later. If she hadn’t been certain that he was following her, she might not even have noticed his car.

The man was an expert. Throughout the one-hour drive, Vespera’s hands were sweating. She relaxed a little once she arrived at Halewick. As soon as she neared the community, she suddenly stepped on the gas. “Tucd she found out!” the man hissed from the car behind her. Since the roads were empty, Vespera ran the red light without slowing down. She drove into the community, leaving the car stuck outside. Vespera exhaled. She was finally safe.

Vespera drove the car into a garage. After parking the car, she took her luggage with her. While walking, she gave Rebecca a call, explaining that she had been…

In the garage, a man got out of another car, dressed in elegant-looking clothes. He wore a wide-brimmed black hat. Since the hat was huge, he only needed to lower his head slightly, and it would hide his face completely. The man walked steadily and quietly behind Vespera; his footsteps didn’t even make a sound. Vespera stopped in front of a panel to scan her face for access while telling Rebecca about someone tailing her earlier.

Suddenly, Vespera felt a sharp gust of wind behind her. Something hit the back of her neck hard, and she blacked out. As she fell to the ground, the phone slipped from her hand to the floor. The man quickly helped to steady her. He stealthily caught her phone before ending the call. “Veta? I can’t hear you.” Rebecca called a few times before realizing that the call had ended.

Did Vespera accidentally end the call? Rebecca decided to call her back.
